Conspicuously absent from the ESPN media empire the past few days was any mention of the story about Brett Favre advising the Lions on the Packers, which was first reported by Fox's Jay Glazer. And now we know why. From ProFootballTalk.com:

A source, who for reasons likely related to making the monthly mortgage payment has asked not to be identified, has forwarded to us a version of ESPN’s internal “Hot List,” which provides a detailed rundown of the current stories that might merit mention on the various ESPN properties.

It’s a lengthy collection of news and nuggets regarding all of the major sports (and golf). At the bottom, there’s a description of one specific story that should be avoided.

Under the heading “DO NOT REPORT . . . DO NOT REPORT . . . . DO NOT REPORT . . . DO NOT REPORT” (um, we get the point) appears the following:

“Yesterday, FoxSports reported that Brett Favre spent 60 to 90 minutes before the Week Two game between the Lions and the Packers educating the Detroit coaching staff regarding the Packers’ offensive strategies. WE HAVE BEEN TOLD BY RELIABLE SOURCES THIS REPORT IS NOT TRUE. We did NOT report it yesterday. Today, the NFL responded to the report, saying even if Favre did this he did not break any league rules. We are NOT reporting it today, because that would mean airing the erroneous report. DO NOT REPORT IT.”

In case you missed the story

Woodson: Report shows Favre out to 'sabotage' Packers

Story Highlights
Favre allegedly supplied Packers info to the Lions coaches before Week 2
Favre strongly denied the report in a text message to NBC Sports

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Cornerback Charles Woodson says that if a media report indicating that Brett Favre shared inside knowledge of the Green Bay Packers' offense with Detroit Lions coaches is true, it's nothing short of sabotage.

Has one of the most beloved players in Packers history become Benedict Brett?

"He contacted them? I don't respect that," Woodson said after the Packers' victory over Indianapolis on Sunday. "If they call him and he gives them information, that's one thing. But to seek a team out and to feel like you're trying to sabotage this team, I don't respect that. I know he's been the greatest player around here for a long time, but there's no honor in that."

Woodson's sharp comments came in the wake of a foxsports.com report Sunday that Favre called the Lions before their Sept. 14 game against the Packers in Detroit and spent more than an hour giving coaches information on nuances of the offense he used to run.

Favre -- who was traded to the New York Jets after a prolonged, ugly split with the Packers' front office this summer -- was not asked about the report after the Jets' loss at Oakland on Sunday.

But in a text message to an NBC reporter before the Seahawks-Buccaneers primetime game, Favre strongly denied the report.

"I would say it's disappointing," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said.

McCarthy added that he was aware of the report but "not really in tune" with its details and did not want to comment further.

An NFL spokesman did not immediately respond to a message sent by The Associated Press, but Favre's alleged contact with the Lions is not believed to violate any league rules.

Woodson, however, seems to consider it unethical.

"I've never called a coach on another team and told them what's going to happen," Woodson said. "It is what it is. Obviously he says he wasn't bitter about what happened, but obviously there is a little bit of resentment there."

Packers wide receiver Ruvell Martin shared Woodson's concern.

"If it's true, then you've got to question motives," Martin said. "I don't know what to say."

But Martin downplayed the actual damage leaked inside information could do to a team.

"In my opinion, there's not too much you can gain," Martin said. "You can give them our hand signals (but) those are on tape already. If we find out you've got our hand signals, we try to find a way (around it)."

Packers center Scott Wells said it would be "disappointing" if Favre shared information with the Lions, but noted that the Packers beat the Lions.

"Obviously it didn't work out too well for them," Wells said. "We were still able to go out and move the ball on them and win the game."

Other Packers players wouldn't touch the subject.

"I'd rather not know what it is and not comment on it," said wide receiver Donald Driver, a close friend of Favre's.

Re: ESPN Refuses To Air Story That Favre Told The Lions How To Beat The Packers In Wk

supposedly the word was put out to all espn employees- blazer said he didnt even tell Favre he was running the story because Favre would have had an Espn puppet spin it from his own side

Re: ESPN Refuses To Air Story That Favre Told The Lions How To Beat The Packers In Wk

I'm not surprised, ESPN has been giving Farve sloppy head for a good while.

But on the real, that's a dick move if it's proven true that Farve would give a opposing info on his old team. The Packers aren't without blame for the shit that went down in the off season, but Farve needs to let that shit go.

The bad thing is even with all that info Farve gave them, the fucking lions still lost the game.

Re: ESPN Refuses To Air Story That Favre Told The Lions How To Beat The Packers In Wk

now I must admit, that reading a lot of criticisms of ESPN on this site has opened my eyes up to a lot of their ways...

but this story is unfounded. it sounds like a message board rumor that landed its way onto a writers email somehow...I wouldn't report on it either.

Riiiiiight...Because we ALL know that ESPiN waits for the entire truth to come out before they report their stories

Re: ESPN Refuses To Air Story That Favre Told The Lions How To Beat The Packers In Wk

They did not report it but jokes were thrown out during the Highlights. (Stan Verrett ) Doubt you will see him on SC for a while.

PTI did touch on it but only for a hot second.

Of course the NFL is not going to confirm this.

ESPN did not want to piss off the again NFL so they can keep the games.

I hope that if the story is true he gets the same treatment that they gave Adam or T.O. It already has one source, Jay Glazer. The Lions coach wont even comment on the story. This story has too much smoke for there not to be fire. The more they ignore it, the worse it will get. The only time I watch ESPN is for MNF. Their brand of overanalyzation is nauseating.Hell, Dan LeBatard, who works with ESPN, even spoke to Glazer and after listening to him, came to the conclusion that Glazer story is accurate. BGOL knows about ESPN's antics, its hightime the media exposes them for this BS. Adam and T.O. are treated as pariah's while Matt Jones and Bret get little airtime or are ignored.
