Successful Black Men in BGOL

Parents split when I was 3 (papa became a rolling stone)
First in my family to go to college
Three degrees: BS, MS, and just got my JD
Spent 8 years as a Navy officer
Used to run a mentor program for elementary school students
Just started at a major law firm in DC
Faithfully married 3 years
Just getting started

Right on, bruh. Right on!

Great ideas.

Also, when you set your company up, be sure and get HUB certified. That stands for Historically Underutilized Business. It only requires paperwork that any one with a little snap can fill out. Google it and read up. It qualifies you for certain contracts based on set-asides. Go for it and you will be surprised at how much business is available for those willing to run a business right.

Good look on that HUB thing..........

Bless.

Also, if any of yall want a 4 year degree you may want to save money like I did: do 2 years in community college and transfer out to a public university. Save 70% off college.

My story really isn't as impressive as most...

Graduated with BS in Marketing

Married for over 3 years with one child

Been with my wife for the last 11 years (known her all of my life)

Bought my house a litlle less than 2 years ago on Long Island (a few months before my 26th birthday)

I am looking to make more of a difference by mentoring, but right now, just trying to lead by example and be the best man that I can be

I like this thread, we should make it a sticky. I was actually thinking of starting a blog dedicated to this topic. There's so much negativity about us in the mainstream media. I think that we need to provide a constant flow of positive and uplifting examples for the youth.

Bruha,

I'm inspired by your commitment and dependability, bruh. I could use more of those values in my own life. Thank you.

Go for it, bro. There's so much negativity in the media and, sadly, within our community, we need more positivity.

I am a writer and producer on two of televisions 4 black themed programs. I have had the pleasure of speaking with a few brothers and sisters on this board who are looking to enter the writing end of entertainment. My story is similar to what many have already expressed: nobody encouraged me to do shit. My interests led me to my heroes and I followed their path. Now that I'm here, I find like minded individuals who share their thought and experiences with me, but I don't depend on that. What I do depend on is my ability to get up everyday and do my best.

Graduated with a B.S. in Political Science in 2005.

Worked for a year and half as a legislative analyst for the Florida State Senate Democratic Office until political turnover crept in and ousted me since I had the least amount of experience, though I was doing a better job then most who were there for years.

Decided that no time was better to start on my collegiate goal of going to law school since I couldn't find employment and last August entered my first year of law school.

Now I am a Juris Doctorate Candidate for May 2010.

I would like to know about this tv production. thanks

MY GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT TO DATE ARE MY KIDS.

Honestly, when you can say that line right there, then you are truly successful. I coach kids and I am always amazed at how many parents truly fuck up their lives on a regular basis. Most kids have never heard the phrase "I Believe in You", so they feel like they have nothing to live for.

I own 3 businesses, and have an executive position at television station group. Wifey is a high level consultant. decent degrees from an elite state school, four cars, nice crib, etc. But what is most important is the fact that we have helped and mentored tons of kids all the way through college. But nothing is more rewarding than to see a young black man, who comes in with no confidence, no self worth, find himself, and starts believing in himself.

Only thing I am missed out on in life is developing a business line for Credit Default Swaps, I would have been Warren Buffett by now, and asking all of America to "help a brother out".....LMAO

Congrats on the success brothers. I am really surprised.....NO HATERS have popped up....

Great to see yall stories in this thread. Post more.
I've been wathcing the thread grow for a while now and have deliberately delayed replying but I just cant take it any longer... this post is a reflection of people's mental picture of social standing and status... what constitutes high/low social status...

I'm going to respond on a level but unfortunately some people might take it as a negative response however those with even the littlest grasp/understanding of the world they live in would understand that it is in fact positively/inspirationally intended

With a Masters in Software Engineering & being a Software Specialist I too used to think that that was a sign of success etc until I learned that Universities and Colleges were originally set-up in medieval europe by freemasons and secret societies as a place where they could share/collate hidden knowledge among themselves by levels or degrees

the levels/degrees go up to 33 therefore a Ph.D graduate only reached the 3rd level of a possible 33!!! - this was what I found myself reading... that there are those people who set-up the possible routes that peoples lives would take and there are those people going through those routes and thinking they have achieved greatness in life

to dumb it down getting a Ph.D MBA etc is comparable to dumb-ass niggas fucking dating living with and even marrying fat white bitches taking them out to be seen with and thinking to themselves "they the shit!"

I mean just wtf?!? :D :smh: - the relativity is on what level can you relate

I said I want going to participate in this thread but I'm bored waiting on this plane

B.S. Behavioral science
MECP certificated

Started off doing special ed testing and placement in public schools and in the summers doing aftermarket automotive installs which then turned into a full time thing when I opened up a garage. Did that for a minute got tired of it,(I hate physical labor) did auto sales for a quick minute til one day this kat walked in with a 10k check from selling phones. Quit that week got hired at a gte wireless chain, blew up big, said I could do this better then the people I was working for. I quit and signed up to be a sub agent for a few carriers and worked out of the house doing sales and biz-to-biz with 4 outside salespeople.

A year after doing that opened up my first set of karts and kiosks around NE Ohio selling alltel, cingular, sprint, and verizon, expanding from there until I dropped the karts and grad up to actual stores. after 2 years I changed to an exclusive verizon agent. Did thar for a while expanding then I bought out a company who couldn't sell tmobile in the carolinas so I bought out his stores, took a loss for a minute due to launch delays but I sold my verizon stores in ohio for a mil+ and merged with another company to become a partner for the carolina stores and our expansion into other places. So now its just really not doing much of anything. I did open up an alltel kiosk in nc under the mrs. name though just to see how it would go and to pass the boredom.

All that I used to start up everything initially was 3500 bucks

Bruh, Software engineering? That's fucking impressive. I wish I can do that shit. The closest to it I can even get is HTML and that ain't even getting close at all. Much props to you, my bruh. Keep on doing ya thang!

While you mentioned some other stuff, I just want to focus on the INSPIRATIONAL part of ya thang. Software engineering takes a lot of endurance and persistence. I know I can't fuck with math so much RESPECT, playa!

I disagree with you on some things in the wireless industry but I must admit that I admire your hustle and some of the bitches you post:D

I am young and I know measuring success includes more than money but I was wondering if there were any millionaires in here and if so how did you make it? I know someone said they made a million off of a brownstone.
