Successful Black Men in BGOL

:smh: Frankly I am the opposite of everybody.
Both father and mother have higher degrees education but I do not :(
When school got too easy, I got bored and dropped.
Been hustling and doing a bunch of things all my life.
But thanks to the inspirational tales of this thread, I will strive to do and be greater

Founder and CEO of Firstdown After School inc. I have 4 contracts with elementary schools providing services to teach anti alcohol/tobacco and other drug information and receive $312.00 a child that completes my 6week program.

Director of Services at Non profit Mental health Agency founded by my mother. Going into our 5th year through hard work and sacrifice we have serviced over 200 at risk kids over the past 5 years and now have received at minimum $1.5M in grants and state funding per year for the next 5 years(fee for services). Were also given medicaid waiver HMO/PPO credentials starting Jan 1st. Hard work, determination and sacrifice has paid off.

Next Goal, purchase closed nursing home to make it a for-profit group home. In 4 years plan to manage/own/co-own 3 companies and work from home while raising (future) children at age 35.

My degree is: 3 years of Informatics school at IU,several mental health certifications,a pissed off attitude from being laid of 4 times from IT companies, and a big fuck you to the teachers/counselors and ex friends that wrote me off.

hmmmm

Graduated with a B.A. in Communication Technology last year, still trying to put it to use. My options I'm contemplating right now are:
1. Go back to school for my masters in Communication Technology, Visual Communication Design, or something related to Film Production.
2. Go to S.Korea to take up teaching English to Korean students.
3. Stay persistent in job hunting to put my degree to use now.

Good drop..

Me - Bachelors in Comp Sci.
Worked in corporate for a decade.
Finishing a MBA w/a concentration in MIS.

This statement is as honest as it comes. Remember everyday starts from the beginning. So tomorrow start over and like you said
"I will strive to do and be greater"

Take it one day at a time...indeed!

This has got one of the best post on this site...My hat goes off to each one of you who are holding it down. As for me...

Neither parents valued college I was groomed to "get a job and be happy"
My ambition would not allow me to accept this..so now I've been in I.T for about 10 years and me and wife are pursuing Bachelor's Degrees simultaneously on one income and raising a family of three.

It's been a rough ride but if it were easy everyone would do it. Im also working on starting a technical consulting biz that's in its fledging stage.

Your stories have offered some great inspiring feelings, again My hats off to all who shared their stories of success!!

I have a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Computer Science. I put myself through school without any financial assistance from my parents. Product of a broken home because drug abuse tore my family apart like so many others. Its interesting because most people's living environment gets better as they mature through adolescence, but mine was the exact opposite LOL. In a matter of 8 yrs or so I went from living in a nice house, to living in the hood with the mice, racial profiling, drug dealers, and occasional murders. However, I said that because I want people to know that you can still progress in life no matters your circumstances if you believe in yourself, have positive people around you that will push you to succeed, and never settle for what you have.

Always strive to be better and do not let anyone or anything stop you from achieving your goals. I didn't not let my exterior circumstances dictate my interior/mental state of mind. I knew I wanted to get a bachelors degree and did so. Being black I knew that I had to distinguish myself from others competing in my field so I got my Masters Degree in 3 semesters as well. I went straight from undergrad to grad school because if I knew I didn't want to work full-time and go to school part time. I finished this past December and I moved out to Cali about 8 months ago from ATL. I'm currently working for an aerospace company. My main goals right now are to progress in my career, get out of debt (CAU and Sallie Mae made me pay for my Masters degree lol), and continue to increase my credit score. I also want to learn music production cause its been a passion of mine for a while. I just haven't taken the time to discipline myself to learning the craft. I am blessed and thankful for God continuing to watch over me. I hope that I continue to be a positive to all those that I come in contact with.

I need everyone to know...

There are several members on this board that never went to college; but instead worked, been in the US Armed Forces for 20 plus years; and never went to college...or just continued to work for their Family owned company; and are completely satisfied with that.

Or started working for the Government at an early age, and are sitting well as an GS-13 or GS-15.

I believe that they have been Successful, and continue to be.

probs to them as well (Male and Female)

My dude, just go to dental school. There aren't nearly enough dentists in the US, let alone black dentists. Baby boomer dentists gonna be retiring like crazy and over the next 15 years there's about to be a shortage like you wouldn't believe (less than 58 dental schools in the country). Why not sacrifice the extra 2 yrs. of school and instead of pulling down 40-80K doing cleanings, pull 120-250K hiring somebody else to? I know cats out here doing general dentistry making half-a-million working 4 days a week. I don't need to know anything else after that. Me and my wife graduate dental school in May. Please believe most of my homies from undergrad (shoutout to Tennessee State University) could do this if they wanted but probably think it's too hard or too much of a time constraint. :smh: In 365 days I'll be out earning all of them. In 5 years I'll out-earn all of them combined. Just saying, think about it.

You know what I appreciate that prospective. I didn't really give it a lot of thought but going to now and I probably would have because I would have looked at all the options. I just knew I wanted to do something in dentistry. I never shy away from hard work because most of the time its worth it. Congratulations and I'm going to look into it now. Thanks.

Remember success is what you make it. You don't have to get a degree to be successful. I always say if I can make 40k a year doing music I will be a great success to me, because I could sustain my life, doing something I absolutely love. I would be the broke rapper and producer  but wouldn't give a shit. Find something you love to do, and do that shit better then anyone else. Money is needed but how much, is determined by you (and your kids if you got any and they mama . All jokes aside it's never too late just do you!!!

At 22 I work in the GOM for the largest oil and gas company by revenue in the world...I dropped out of college and didn't finish my degree at 20....a lot of people talked down and tried to write me off after that....attended a testing battery of 5000 people and scored high, 300 got interviews, 60 people got jobs....guess who got one of them  now I make :yes:significantly:yes: more than all of my peers and family members who do have college degrees. I've never smiled so much at high gas prices :lol::lol:

Never went to college, always thought I was too smart for school back then. I had the same job I had since I was in highschool doing the same thing for 8+ years. Had a homeboy who owned his own business for the same amount of time I had been working, he knew I had bigger aspirations so he gave me a number to an Advertising exec and got me put on as an intern. The company was a start up so I got to see how to start a business and mantain it in its infancy, so I learned a lot of game from that and decided I liked the website design aspect of the ad game. So over the course of the past 8 months I taught myself Flash and I have just completed my first all flash website for the company I worked for.

Now that I finished that first website I started taking this Flash shit seriously and I just got a new contract for a fashion magazine out of Atlanta. And now I'm looking to start working for myself and make things happen like I used to imagine in my head. I never again want to work for anybody but myself.

Graduated from law school in November of 1990. Worked one year as a prosecutor and followed the advice of the lawyer who helped me get hired, "stay one year or ten jury trials and leave."

I have been running my on solo shop every since. That will be 17 years in January. And believe me, it's a hustle.

Two years ago I started a Bail Bond company that is growing. I put it in the same office as the Law Office and our motto is, "we get you out in the front and we get you off in the back.":lol:

Success? Not something that I think about a lot. Too busy thinking about my next move. I don't think that I am there yet because there is so much more I have to do.

1. I need to make more money.
2. I need to get back into real estate investing.
3. I need to buy my wife a bigger home.

I know that money and material things shouldn't matter so much, but fuck it; for me they do and I want them. Ain't ashamed to say it.

The greatest thing I started this year was a standing breakfast with my father twice a month.

Guess that's it for now.

Good advice...A lot of young heads and some older need to hear your words

Thank you for the inspiration, mah bruhs (But fuck that bitch ass that posted that Mario brothers bullshit trying to clown this thread).

Keep the inspiration coming, bruhs. Let's draw from each other's strenghts and support each other with important life lessons.

Peace and ONE!

Ok I'm real late to this post. So here goes.

I was always drawing and painting from day 1 on this earth. I would be drawing cars, houses, people all day in school until my junior year in high school when I was introduced to CAD (CAD 11). From that day on I was interested in Architecture and wanted to pursue it. However, I was sidetracked when a counselor steered me towards Engineering.

Long story short I failed miserably in Junior College and ended up spending 4 years in the retail business. THAT WAS WAKE UP CALL.

I then went back to Junior College finished up an Associates in Science then transfer to Pratt Institute where I got a Professional in Architecture Degree (5 year Degree in 4 years). I the went on to work for 10 years in Brooklyn for a non profit rehabbing Brownstones, designing hospices for people with HIV, the Bronx River Watershed study, Cypress Hills Community school etc.

For the last Five I have been working in the Private sector (The last project I was Project Manager on was a 2.2 Million dollar 11 building project in Syracuse that's under construction)

I recently become a victim of the bad economy :hmm:. So any of you millionaires out there need a house built I'm available.

Some ideas:

Telecom services include construction drawings etc... check out General Dynamics, Bechtel in their telecom division (website).

Alternative Energy is getting bigger.

Download the bailout bill and scan through it. There are a lot of goodies for companies.
e.g. Wind farms need construction drawings etc....

Register yourself as a company, setup part of your apt/home as an office and expense the square footage to the business (takes off something off your rent/mortgage).

Do some research into alternative energy, that field is really going to kick off.
Look at things like natural gas pipeline layouts, windmill structures, energy efficient modification of existing buildings including schools etc......
Think out of the box.
if it means doing a short course on environment etc... do that.

Go to your municipality and find out how you could provide your expertise to their zoning board for any construction project from telecom towers to renovations & new construction.

Just a couple of ideas off the top of my head.

Good luck Bro, you'll make it..........just think outside the box to use your transferable skills across industries.

I did 20 years in the army as an Avionics Mechanic (35K, 68N, 15N) and retired. Now I receive a check in the mail every month. :D

Received my AS in Computer while in the service.

Now I work for the Department of Army as an Equipment Specialist in Avionics. I help soldier work on aircraft avionics systems.

With my salary as a GS-13 (for those who work for the Govern know what that is) and my retirement check I bring in the 6 figures every year.
I have my own house, two cars and single liven the good life.

Who are you with, AMCOM?

Great ideas.

Also, when you set your company up, be sure and get HUB certified. That stands for Historically Underutilized Business. It only requires paperwork that any one with a little snap can fill out. Google it and read up. It qualifies you for certain contracts based on set-asides. Go for it and you will be surprised at how much business is available for those willing to run a business right.

Thanks Leeeeeee and kayanation. I'm gonna look into these things before I end up in Bahrain. They are offering tripple figure one year contracts there for Architects/Project Managers.....

Then I thought about not being able to log into BGOL.......
