Successful Black Men in BGOL

I did 20 years in the army as an Avionics Mechanic (35K, 68N, 15N) and retired. Now I receive a check in the mail every month. :D

Received my AS in Computer while in the service.

Now I work for the Department of Army as an Equipment Specialist in Avionics. I help soldier work on aircraft avionics systems.

With my salary as a GS-13 (for those who work for the Govern know what that is) and my retirement check I bring in the 6 figures every year.
I have my own house, two cars and single liven the good life.

I have 2 college degrees. One Bachelors and also an Associates. Come spring or summer time I plan on obtaining my Masters degree. I just have to find what degree will help me progress in my job/career.

What do you do for a living?

Maybe we all can put some things out there for you to consider.

I'm a Process Operator with a Chemical company. I really would like to get an Engineering degree, but those math classes I just can't make it through.

Props to these cats. But don't these shits read like dating ads..."I like walks on the beach and intense basketball games."

back In The 80's I Saved A Princess In 8 Different Worlds. I Fought Monsters All The Time And Had No Encouragement But That Of My Brother Luigi. We Had To Smash Bricks For Money. I Remember Only Eating Mushrooms For Breakfast, Lunch, & Dinner But That Helped Me Grow Up.

That's crazy, fam... I went through the same shit, even down to the brother Luigi...

Brotha, I define "successful" beyond money or whatever "conventional" definition there is. For the purposes of this thread and personally, I define success as:

the individual's ability to achieve with whatever amount was given to that individual and achieving maturity/rising to challenges along the way. In Christ's parable of "the talents" it wasn't the fact that the servants can double their Master's money. What blessed them was the fact that they ACTED on their talents instead of just burying it. The same truth applies here--success isn't measured in just conventional means but also in the stories of growth, sincere effort, maturity, and moments of clarity resulting in deeper personal contentment. Those aspects of success TRANSCEND mere money/fame/status.

I find all those aspects inspiring. Beyond mere money or fame, the true measure of a man is how much he gives back, the example he sets, his ability to let his own dreams and aspirations pervade others and LIFT OTHERS UP.

Keep on keepin' on, mah bruhs. Keep inspiring us with your personal stories--we all may come from different directions, but we're all unified from the same shared culture and destiny.

WELL STATED.........THANK YOU.

YOU CAN IF YOU DECIDE YOU CAN.

WHEN AND IF YOU WANT IT BAD ENOUGH ......YOU WILL.

I am a whiz in math. If you need help let me know. I sometimes teach my class when they can't understand my professor. My high school math teacher used to make me sit by him when we took exams, because everybody would try to cheat off my test:lol:

Take your time with the math and try and apply it to something you really love. It will come a lot easier to make it a game first.

You're the only one who sees it that way. How about keeping with the threads and post your own inspirational accomplishment, if you have any:)

I've been curious and nosey all my life. I wanted to know how everything work from fixing my neighbors televisions to putting rubber bands on VCRs. Join the Army at 17, and retired at 38. Received a Bachelors Degree in International Studies while on active duty.Traveled around the world to over 45 countries (so far). I often sit and wonder what would I change about my journeys, and the answer is absolutely nothing. I presently work for the State Department living in Germany, and so happy that I'm not dealing with the issues back in the States. Oh yeah I've voted for Obama already.

I'm real hard on myself so I wouldn't say I'm successful since I haven't fulfilled most of the things I want to do.

Have a MS Computer Science, consulting engineer in Telecom, consistently make over 6 figures for the last few years.

However I do that because i can not because I see it as something I want to do for the rest of my life.

Started my 1st business (shop) at age 14 including taking inventory, stocking etc... selling sodas, sweets, candies etc.

Started a youth group in my community at age 14, was the president until age 19. Focus was on developing leaders and excellence in education.

Lectured for 1 year, tutored for several.

Held various leadership positions nationally (in country of origin) including Y2K committees etc.

Dad died.

Migrated to the US to be further challenged (to not become complacent being a big fish in a small pond).

Lead several teams in building out cellular network in several cities/states.

Currently consult to several non-profit orgs.

Currently own my own technical consultancy in telecom.

Thinking about doing guest lectures in a charter school I have already identified.

Have 2 books consisting of probable 200 poems that I keep promising to publish.

BGOL resident historian/black militant...:D

I have a gift of motivating people despite race/creed/class.

Would like to further explore that side of me.

Would love to create a network of practical knowledge that is accessible for youths especially black youths to tap into to put their lives into perspective.

On another note........ poverty and hardship is all relative.

At age 5 it was part of the routine to grab two 1 gallon bottles, walk 3 miles to fill water at 5 am, make 4 trips and then get ready to go to elementary school......

By the time I was in high school, my classmates were wondering why I was so strong....:hmm:

It's all good......... too bad Dad didn't live to see all of this but I know that he knew how I would turn out and despite him being a little jealous, he would still boast about me to the people around him when I wasn't around.......:(

He taught me a lot of life's lessons, one in particular........ you don't have to have much to give back

You'll stay blessed.

;)

Fam As "Political As you ARE", U should be aside Obama, because all the knowledge/science you be dropping, I can see u setting many asses Ablaze with your intellect and very historical "Fact Finding" greatness, I honestly can say I've LEARNED some things from you , THANKS for the enlightment, WORD!!!, U remind me of the Professor in "Higher Learning"(NO HOMO)..

WELL STATED.........THANK YOU.

Yeah I know but a long term goal of mine is to get a Masters that will set me up that I can teach at a Community College when I get older. A second income and job for when I retire. You know you can never have enough money coming in especially with our economy. Becoming an Engineer would be great but financially I wouldn't gain anything.

this is EASILY one of the BEST threads on BGOL.

keep doing what your doing and inspiring others to do so:yes:

I just got a job with the GENOME project (they've mapped out the human genes). I am a bioengineer. Last year a friend told me the have been studying the black males genes to understand how there can be vast differences on genatalia size. So basically took the job to sabotague the research..... Some things have to remain a mystery.

JUST KIDDING...

It aint about being a black animator....its about being the best animator. Your work has to speak for itself. Keep polishing your skill and it will be undeniable.... I don't know anyone who wants to settle for second place when hiring..... As an entrepreneur who has procured talent on occasion... i want the best....

May i add my 2 cents !!

STOP HATING on a nigga you've never even met in real life...

Learn to network with people who you think might help you in life, and stop with the mentality of "fuck that nigga, I got this... I can do this by myself..." :smh:

Its that same "bragadosha" mentality that has had you going NOWHERE for years now....

Time waits for no one !! Ya Dig :D

Congrads to everyone in here and stay positive.

:smh:On the other hand I dont have shit to contribute to this because Im not successful in anything like some of you are,but if staying alive and somewhat healthy is considered success? well im half way there.I haven't been sick or hospitalized in four years.

Oh man I love the job that I have. I actually left my job that I had with my Bachelors to go and obtain an Associates degree. I have a ton of time off and I work with a good group of guys. Just looking for upward mobility with another degree within my career group. I'm starting from the bottom which pays dam good and want to go up. The job that I had previously just asked for a high school diploma. Now they want a 2 year degree which I have ,but with my Bachelors doors will open up. Heck since I've been there my Supervisor asked me to apply for a job that has opened up due to my education. With a Masters no telling what I can do.

Any success stories in the film business. Trying to get into the writing business and possibly future directing black film's. Currently trying to start up something with a current actor who's been in small roles in Player's Club, American History X and other's. It will happen. I won't quit.

Do you have anything ready for pitch?

Started working after high school cause I fucked up my scholarship offers.:angry:

I hated working for other people. Took my own money out of pocket and went to the same computer classes(was expensive but it was hands on) the corporate cats went to and soaked up all the info. Made connections cause I learned my shit and people were impressed.

I started my company, had 2 other cats that I knew could do some contract work and were like shoot us like whatever, I got a piece of the action, they get paid, everybody happy. I started doing non-profit work in the inner city. My business would refurbish the computers for families, teach seniors and kids how to use them, train cats for jobs.:yes:

By the early part of this century I was IT'd out. When you start to hate something it is time to move the fuck on.

That is when I started personal training. Money was great, could work in sweats, and everybody didn't 'know everything'.

I am most proud that I lived below my means. When business took off I didn't go get a benz and a 500k home. So now in my early 30's I set myself up where I just have to work part fucking time and I can enjoy time with my kids and THEY LOVE IT AND ARE BETTER FOR IT.:yes::yes::yes:

I do think about challenging myself with other endeavors so who the fuck knows what I will do next.

:yes::yes::yes::yes::yes:

Now that's what I'm talking about. Shit makes me proud as a mf.
Stay up brothas!
CAC's to da back!:hmm:

Going into our 5th year through hard work and sacrifice we have serviced over 200 at risk kids over the past 5 years and now have received at minimum $1.5M in grants and state funding per year for the next 5 years(fee for services). Were also given medicaid waiver HMO/PPO credentials starting Jan 1st. Hard work, determination and sacrifice has paid off.

Next Goal, purchase closed nursing home to make it a for-profit group home. In 4 years plan to manage/own/co-own 3 companies and work from home while raising (future) children at age 35.

My degree is: 3 years of Informatics school at IU,several mental health certifications,a pissed off attitude from being laid of 4 times from IT companies, and a big fuck you to the teachers/counselors and ex friends that wrote me off.
