I have two master degrees..one in education and the other in sociology

I was given a bachelors degree

I grew up dead poor and I made my own successes through hard work

One of my best friends was murdered on the very street that i lived on....it gave me strength to help those who grew up like us

I teach for the love of black kids....not for the salary

out of college, I became a child protective worker, to help my own kind

In order to change the hood, you have to give back to it

im doing my part, what about yall????

I wasn't necessarily living poor when I grew up but we hit rough times. That rough time inspired me to be more autonomous and more indepedent of my parents (began when i was around 12).

I finished high school and went straight to college where I not only completed my bachelors but served in the Nat'l Guard and ROTC. I became an Officer upon graduation and traveled to a few places. I served in the recent war and got out of active duty. I'm now Honarably Discharged as a Captain.

I've built houses, managed trucks and taught high school and still mentor many of the kids I taught.
I work as a PC technician and think it is my best job that I have had and enjoy it.
I own my condo and still belive in living within my means.
In order to stay true to my talents, I've begun to paint and do art again.

Life is good because I stayed shooting straight.

:dance:that is a good move. steady job and positive too.

I've been working with "troubled" kids for the last 5 years. I've worked in group homes, residential hospitals, and done community mentoring. I currently work for a company called Y-Capp (Youth Challenged Advised and Positively Promoted). I work in a middle school back in my home town of Newport News after 3 years in Raleigh, NC. I don't make as much money as some but the money is DESCENT and the reward I get is watching kids outlook on life change because of the example I show and my words of encouragement. I wouldn't trade that for anything in the world. So I guess you could call me successful. I also have a beautiful wife and 4 kids that make getting up in the morning a pleasure in and of itself. Big props to all ya'll out there leaving your mark on the world!!

This is great inspiration for a young brother like myself who's still in school and working to make a come up.

There's light at the end of the tunnel.

Got kicked out of grammar in the sixth grade.

Bounced back graduated with a 3.5.
Went to law school, damn near failed out that bitch 1st year, forced to to take a year off.
Bounced back. I graduate May 16th.

Only male in my generation in my family to finish college.

And yeah... like yall. No encouragement.
Niggas asked me what I was going back to college for.

The hard way takes a while, but you learn alot.
My kids gon' be some bad muthafuckas.

I have a B.S. in Television/Film...the sexiest sounding degree out there, but also the most worthless - if you don't believe me look it up.

I work now for one of the most well known television networks in the world, and the youngest person my department. not "hustling", just working hard and playing the game.

but I tell folks all the time that there is no need for all those letters behind your name, just get out here and play the game.

Basically. I'm not even Microsoft certified but I've gotten the tech support gameat multiple building sewn up. I'm self taught and turned my hobby into my career. Don't worry about the degree...I'm a Visual Arts major. Even though I never used my degree, people know my talent.

Advice to all, follow the money and carry an umbrella, blacks will piss on you more than whites, and will take twice as long to dry. Surround yourself with winners, no matter the race. ***MAKES MENTAL NOTE***
REMEMBER THIS INFORMATION.:hmm:

Great thread brothas,

I graduated from Alabama State in Montgomery in 2002 (Hornets in the bitch)
then went back home to Cali and got my masters in Black studies at UC Davis, after that I subbed at a few elementary schools, then finally taught my own 6th grade class... after that year I decided to pursue my passion for writing and became a full time spoken word artist... at first it was hard just going from city to city featuring at local open mics, but once I got better known I started doing colleges and traveling overseas... I made my dream happen... of course I always had a natural ability to public speak but I had to supplement my talent with hard work practice and determination... young brothas reading if you have a gift dont be satisfied with what ur born with... work hard like you dont have the talent.. always remember Michael Jordan would have just been Kendell Gill if he didnt supplement his god given abilities.. hard work is needed if u wanna make an impression in this world...

Also I would say take inventory of ya gifts an pick one thing to pursue... one of the problems with my generation is that we spread ourselves too wide... wanna do 5 things at once.. while this is cool for some folks, I rather master 1 thing then to be good or ok at 10... we need masters...

lets step it up...

I'm real hard on myself so I wouldn't say I'm successful since I haven't fulfilled most of the things I want to do.

Have a MS Computer Science, consulting engineer in Telecom, consistently make over 6 figures for the last few years.

However I do that because i can not because I see it as something I want to do for the rest of my life.

Started my 1st business (shop) at age 14 including taking inventory, stocking etc... selling sodas, sweets, candies etc.

Started a youth group in my community at age 14, was the president until age 19. Focus was on developing leaders and excellence in education.

Lectured for 1 year, tutored for several.

Held various leadership positions nationally (in country of origin) including Y2K committees etc.

Dad died.

Migrated to the US to be further challenged (to not become complacent being a big fish in a small pond).

Lead several teams in building out cellular network in several cities/states.

Currently consult to several non-profit orgs.

Currently own my own technical consultancy in telecom.

Thinking about doing guest lectures in a charter school I have already identified.

Have 2 books consisting of probable 200 poems that I keep promising to publish.

BGOL resident historian/black militant...:D

I have a gift of motivating people despite race/creed/class.

Would like to further explore that side of me.

Would love to create a network of practical knowledge that is accessible for youths especially black youths to tap into to put their lives into perspective.

On another note........ poverty and hardship is all relative.

At age 5 it was part of the routine to grab two 1 gallon bottles, walk 3 miles to fill water at 5 am, make 4 trips and then get ready to go to elementary school......

By the time I was in high school, my classmates were wondering why I was so strong....:hmm:

It's all good......... too bad Dad didn't live to see all of this but I know that he knew how I would turn out and despite him being a little jealous, he would still boast about me to the people around him when I wasn't around.......:(

He taught me a lot of life's lessons, one in particular........ you don't have to have much to give back

You'll stay blessed.

;)

I just recently recieved my Bachelor's in Media Arts & Animation. I have a lot of work ahead of me before I can get into Pixar. I don't know if Pixar has many black animators.

I fuck some of your classmates (have and will again in the future)

But on the topic of the thread......

Lets see here..... grew up in a pretty decent area (parents moved from Bellwood when shit was crazy in the late 80s). Went to Undergrad at Xavier University in Louisiana. Struggled with test taking problems(still do). Went to seek help at Xavier, Tulane, Loyola and even Delgado...... no help. Took the MCAT and did really shitty. Found a post bacc program and didnt get in. Moved to the city where the post bacc was located and started taking classes the summer I graduated Undergrad. Then I reapplied to the program... got in and started med school. Problem is.... test taking is still an issue.... so I struggled with the tests. Had to pass the last test to move on to the next year..... was 1.6% AWAY!!!:smh: Then went to the review and found some eraser mistakes.....

Then when I went to the powers that be (white ladies) and told them the deal.... these bitches say that I cheated and try to get me kicked out of med school:angry::angry::angry: As a result.... I miss the remediation and have to repeat the year:angry:

So...... the charges dont go away, we go to a FORMAL Hearing (straight C-span style. Stenographer and everything). One polygraph and two lawyers later..... the school realizes they fucked up. Fast forward to now...... Im blowin tests out 93% and higher and showin these white bitches whose boss.

Also, played bass since 4th grade in Orchestra and electric. Played third stand for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at 16. Soldered my first motherboard when I was 13. Have been breeding Great Danes for 15 years and had one win the AKC best in show in the early 90s.

Precciate this thread and I love seein black people doin their thang. Im gonna be a doctor for my people, my older brother works for Obama in a very high position and will hopefully be a major player in politics. We are going to attack this nation's bullshit from the Political and Medical sides
