I find that Saltwater tanks are much easier to take care of versus a freshwater tank. Once setup and done properly it is self maintained. I dont have filters to clean and change every month or every few weeks. i dont have gravel or sand i have to clean. I do my water changes, water top offs, test the water and dose the water for what it needs and that is it. It is a self contain ecosystem all the way down to the plankton or pods that are in the tank. There is no big mystery to it and the fish arent that much more then cichlids if not on par in pricing. Just do your research and decide what you want to do. If anyone ever needs help i can lend my advice.

If you are properly maintaing your freshwater aquarium, you should at least change your filter media monthly along with your monthly water change. The only reason i say that saltwater is harder is because of the intial demand if you do not get right the first time you will be redoing it or there will be casualty.

But look i accept all yall feedback and i am not trying to start any beef it is just my opinion.

Question... do you have to use those expensive lights they sell or can you go to homedepot and get a fluorescent light?

I set mine up thursday put fish in it friday night (i know I should've waited), have 2 baby fish in there now. One of the fish must've been pregnant. I saw these lil things floating I was like.....WTF!!. stay tune for pics.

for you.....probably twice a day since you only have 5 fish. since i have like around 60 cichlids in my tank....i have to feed them 6 or 7 times a day. they will eat regular cichlid flakes...but they love bloodworms the most. i've also given them live worms a few times and they str8 fuck em up.

if you plan on putting another fish in your tank other than a cichlid....make sure its an upsidedown catfish. thats the only other non-cichlid that they're compatible with. they run anywhere from $8-15 a piece

yeah....i had two of em....but one of mine died....(my fault)
accidentally changed the water in the tank without cleaning out the bucket that i used to siphon the water out the tank with. i previously used the same bucket to mop the kitchen floor with....the bleach and pinesol residue was still in it....:(
it actually took out half my fish when i did that.

Thanks for the bump, I didn't notice this thread before.

I have visited two large aquarium attractions in the past month. Fantastic and amazing creatures they are, large or small. The latest additon to my small tank is a bluegill. It's doing very well in the new environment...

I had a 100 gallon aquarium in Houston where my oldest fish were close to ten years old. There are a few things cats taught me that will basically make your aquariium damn near self-sustaining and fairly cheap to manage.

Fresh Water:
  1. Buy a filter with an open tank. If you do this, you can simply buy your activated charcoal mix by the carton and not have to buy specific filters. You cut off the lower foot or so of a pair of panty hose and fill one foot with the charcoal and the other with the filter gravel, tie each off and drop them in your tank. Better than any filter kit you could buy.
  2. Use plenty of live plants, they manage the PH levels of your water as well as feed on the fish waste and oxygenate the water without using ugly bubble screens.
  3. Use natural rocks for the bed and DO NOT clean under the rocks. Remove waste from the surface of the rocks, but let waste that works it's way under the rocks stay. They call that building a "pond" and it acts as a natural filter in your aquarium the same as the bed of a natural pond or river.
  4. Never change more than 25% of your water at any time. If you do this, you avoid shocking your fish and you don't have to chemically treat your water. I actually got to the point where I only replenished water in my tanks as it naturally evaporated off.
  5. Buy an algae eater to keep your tank glass clean. Don't use algae destroyers because they will kill too much algae and the squeegies just clean the glass and scatter the algae throughout your water.
  6. When travelling, leave a couple of sliced cucumbers or zucchini's in your tank as an auto-feeder. I had about 50 fish in my tank along with several very large older fish and I could leave them unattended for up to two weeks without loosing a single fish. Zuchini is also good when you have fish of varying sizes competing for food because some fish eat high and some eat low.

how can i keep my ammonia down??

I brought i tester today because i notice the fish was always staying on the bottom and just very lazy!!

i did a 25% water change today also! them fish only been in the tank since thursday

That's a good first step. Just do a 10% water change a week and it will come down.

FUK one of my fish just died I was saying this morning he didn't look too good but he started moving around more so I said fuk it. Just now I was looking for him and he was floating by the breeder tank. :smh: I only had him about 4 days.

Do you have any live plants in your aquarium? Put as many as you can in there. Plenty of live plants will actually clean much of the ammonia from your water (just make sure to replace your regular aquarium light with a plant light).
