Where did you go to college, and would you recommend it to others?

Louisiana Tech University

Despite living less than 5 miles from Southern University, I chose TECH for their curriculum and the fact that it allowed me to live away from home yet still be within a 4 hour drive from home. Yes, its a white school but it has a fair amount of blacks going there too. Its not as white (or bias) as LSU mainly because its located in the lower part of the bible belt. Nothing worse than going to a school like LSU that has a bunch of backwood rednecks who only care about football and basketball.....and only tolerate blacks because they can catch a ball or shoot a hoop.:smh:

Would I recommend TECH to others? Yes. It was a great school and not to big in that you get lost in the numbers. Its in a small town so you tend to get to know your fellow schoolmates more because there isnt much to do for miles around. Lastly, if you want the black experience, Grambling is about 4 miles away....
:lol:

bmore

even tho the financial office at morgan was crap

god damn i was in there more than i was in a class room

Good engineering, decent business, the worst financial aid and administrative department in the history of mankind, good looking women, networking opportunities, young, dumb nasty bitches :dance:, and all types of parties. The worst experience you should have is with the assholes in financial aid losing your money even if you are on scholarship.

yeah not all are bad but ASU has been on decline for decades. I think Miles college in b'ham is worse though. they drop bodies out there.

shiiit, they drop bodies at State too.

I almost went there, trying to go where all my friends went after High School, thankfully my mother ended up talking some sense into me.

famu (relatively low cost, they take engineering classes with florida state students, got their shit together)

ncat (good rep in all of the engineering programs & if you're in-state it's low cost)

can't really speak on howard, but the location is nice

tuskegee (location sucks, some really fucked up profs, expensive as hell, fin aid sucks, mechanical engineering has good rep though, if i remember correctly the inventor of the supersoaker is alumnus)

wherever you go, make sure they have their accreditation (very important), research funding and on-going on campus, that the labs are well-maintained, that companies recruit there, the professors are accessible (ask around), and dont mind writing recommendations if you do your part. look for ways to get practical experience by applying for internships, summer research programs, co-ops, rotc (if it suits you, take advantage of them shits). join nsbe (national society of black engineers) and make sure the campus chapter is active. many people got jobs from going to the national conference. companies recruit like mad there. and finally, make sure that you can actually get out in four years (aside from co-ops). some places only offer some classes once a year or every two years so if you fuck up, you're stuck.

preciate the info...

somebody wanted an opinion on howard university, so i'll give it to you...

honestly, it doesn't matter anymore. my opinion i mean...we got a new president this year so things are going to change.

i did hard years under swygert.

BUT i will say this...more honkies know of howard university than any other black school....period.

it may not be the BEST HBCU (very debatable) but on those america's best schools or whatever, it always seems to eek its way on there for some odd reason.

Same thing i was thinking...I know school is everything you make it but it helps to go to one with a name, and as far as I'm concerned going to any HBCU with a name/good reputation is key...any more info on Howard or a HBCU with a good engineering program would be appreciated...

I went to Brown University and it was pretty good for the level of connections I have now. But that was about it.

Doesn't College Park have day time muggings? It's proximity to D.C doesn't do it any favors.

Whatever man...College Park has nothing to do with the closeness to D.C. It sits on a main corridor (Route 1) and is accessible to a lot of things. It also has a good reputation so i would recommend it. You're going to get "campus crime" on any major campus. How do I know? because the one I went to:

Rutgers.jpg

Smack dab in New Brunswick (which has recently undergone gentrification) and Piscataway. Over 20,000 students from all over the world. It has a great engineering school as well as the University of Medicine. New Brunswick is also the location for Johnson and Johnson hq. They also have an Africana Studies Dept that features people like Ivan Van Sertima. I'd recommend it for those that didn't get any afrocentric teachings in high school certainly.

Damn: I forgot to mention the best selling points of my college NOW:

Soak that one up because I never saw it the years I was there.

And also...we keep them NHHs ya dig...and they win.

Well yea any campus is gonna have crime, but College Park in and of itself is a ghetto, if anything, the school is unfortunate to be there. And I mean, yea, I've heard great things on it, especially the Journalism school.

Alot of major schools in big cities suffer from high crime rates. Because that's the downfall of the big city... :smh: i dont think college park has it any worse than any other major school in a big city .

I am a graduate of the University of Houston. Plenty of diversity and it's in a large city. Texas Southern University is 3 blocks away and my undergrad years were great. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Dlateshow

Just graduated from George Mason University, and yes, I would recommend it...the "Final Four" experience was some once-in-a-lifetime shit that I'll never forget. Me, my girl, and my roommate stood in line for 22 hours to get tickets to the GMU-UConn game and it was worth it.

Other than that though,they claim Mason's one of the most diverse schools in the country, but there still aren't that many blacks. Social life is excellent off-campus w/ DC being about 20 minutes away.

That's no complement. I got my graduate degree at that racist hellhole. I talked my daughter out of going there.

Its student body may be racist and obnoxious but that doesn't change the fact it is one of the premier universities in the country.

What sense would that be? :smh:

I shouldn't have to spell it out for you. The public schools I listed in my example are regarded as the best, in terms of a public university. So in a sense they could be considered "Ivy League" for public schools.

Blacksburg as a city is safe, just because some fucking nut came through and fucked it up doesn't mean anything about the city as a whole.

Dude, its a figure of speech.

This is an ivy league school (though not one of the top ranked ones).

Measures of distinction of the faculty include:

66 members of the Academy of Arts and Sciences;
58 members of the Institute of Medicine;
38 members of the National Academy of Sciences;
31 members of the American Philosophical Society
61 Guggenheim Fellowships (1987-2007);
11 members of the National Academy of Engineering;
Seven MacArthur Award recipients;
Six National Medal of Science recipients;
Five Nobel Prize recipients; and
Five Pulitzer Prize winners

This is UVa.

Twenty-five faculty members have been selected as Guggenheim fellows; twenty-six have been awarded Fulbright fellowships; six faculty members have been named National Endowment for the Humanities fellows. Two faculty researchers have won Presidential Young Investigator Awards, and three have won Sloan Foundation Awards. In the sciences, three University of Virginia faculty members have received highly prestigious Packard Foundation Awards. Members of the faculty have won major prizes from various national associations, including the Bancroft Prize of the American Historical Association and the Distinguished Science Award of the American Psychological Association.

Edited for fairness

I think it all depends on your situation and what your goals are. I knew that I wanted to go to grad school, so I opted to go to a cheaper, less reputable undergrad - and if I have to, I'll take loans and such (hopefully I'll get scholarships tho) to attend a grad school with a good reputation.

I'm not a fan of huge student loans, but if you don't have to come out your pocket 100k for college, go to the best school possible (and as dude above said, reputation is key).

Edit: I left out the main point... I'm in my last year at The City College of New York (in Harlem), and I'm gonna go to Columbia or NYU for grad school (God willing).

You have to be careful with that man because some schools look at where you went and weather or not they feel the ciriculum was extensive and challenging enough to compare with what you may face in there program you know like its a diff between getting straight A's at bumfuck U versus Harvard, but with that said good luck fam and i hope you make it in

i go to Alabama State and no i wouldn't recommend it to anyone

:lol: yea its a lil rough down there but i thought it was a ok school i tell you what it was live down there during the track meets and statewide when i would fall through there for those events oh yea and magic city classic and the asu Vs AAMU B-Ball Game

Im currently a Junior at The University of Alabama and I like it here.

I would tell you that you should choose a college based on what you want to study , but as a freshman you dont know what you want to study,you only think you know what you want to study lol.

Just go to a good school and by good I mean reputation.

:yes: its funny i went to the school down the street from yours (stillman)it college is all about whats the right situation for you and the right enviornment and has the best program but tuscaloosa was a fun town and i would not pass it up for the life of me that was hands down a fun time in my life.:yes:

New York City College Of Technology AKA City Tech. Its a great school with lots of females but the elevators are a bitch.

LOL. Nigga you crazy. The bitches is low budget there and easy. But its basically the 13th grade. Its ghetto and high school like. :lol::lol::lol:

LOL @ SIU!!! Im down here for my first year of medical school! I fuckin hate carbondale!!!!!:smh::smh:

C/s i went to see that school when pickking out some schools that place sucks ass

Went to Xavier University and if it wasnt for the city and the women I wouldn't recommend it to ANYONE

got some friends who went there heard it was hard as shit but good education had fun when we went to the classic down there and yea he know some bad chicks

long story short i went around trying to get into big school well they let me in but no money and out of state is a bitch so started lookin at black schools ended up at a small school in alabama by the name of stillman in T-Town (tuscaloosa) it was a nice enviornment because it was a big college town/city i got the best of both worlds as far as school life i was down the street from alabmama and my school was all black. got to experince the sec in full view and saw some great games (even though i wanted to be a wolverine, go Blue)the school was not that hard but i got a decent education and i would not trade the experinces that i got for the world alabama was a fun state not exactly a place i would live in unless i was retiring (no offense to all the alabamians)i would tell people to go to either bama or my school

No doubt.... plenty other schools out in B'ham, so you got your selections 4sho....

:yes:thats fa sho plus you got the locals

Transferring ANYWHERE from Stillman is the best choice anybody could make. My dumb ass was gonna transfter from Stillman to UA after my first year (for football reasons, was tryin to do some things on that level for a sec), but I stayed at Stillman like a jackass.

Never could quite figure out how I made that decision.....:smh:

:lol::lol: you know why we had the finest bitches and the best president:hmm: :puke: j/k i don't know why i did either i guess god just planned it that way:yes: but i would not change it for the world :yes:

i go to Alabama State and no i wouldn't recommend it to anyone

livingstone, in NC and i would not recommend it to anyone now.

i heard now 10+ years later it's a joke
Is it because of racism???
I think it all depends on your situation and what your goals are. I knew that I wanted to go to grad school, so I opted to go to a cheaper, less reputable undergrad - and if I have to, I'll take loans and such (hopefully I'll get scholarships tho) to attend a grad school with a good reputation.

I hear you, I owe 50k already and I have approximately5 years left, granted that I don't have to retake any classes.What is your major??

I'm Currently enrolled in a community college online, it's straight you just got to be more disciplined than the average. I wouldn't recommend, "for profit schools" like (DeVry, Phoenix Online etc...) I've heard bad things about them, and that employee's frown at them when they see those schools on the resume. Go for a college that is REGIONALLY ACCREDITED. Community colleges are cheaper and once you've earned your associates degree you can transfer to a well known University for your Bachelors, or Masters Degree. Just make sure you do your research before pursuing the college of your choice.
Great advice there...
Drexel-University-78DA4593.png

I have gotten some jobs just because of the school so I would recommend it.
I"m sure your GPA had something to do with it..
..GEORGIA TECH AND NO..

Why?

Yeah, Stillman is hood and the Prez aint shit. I graduated in 2005 from there and the enrollment was tryin to get up there back when I first got there. They put in a bunch of bullshit rules and raised the tuition like every year so people got to be like fuck it. Then they would do good the first semester on enrollment, but then people would disappear by second semester due to problems with registration, bookstore never got books when you need them, and it take them bitches months to cut your damn refund check. I'm an Alum and they be sendin me shit to donate money back to the campus. For what??? They aint doin shit to help better the experience for the students, so thats a no go....

:smh::yes: C/S i hat to admit it but true as much good as i spoke on it was hella bad shit you had to put up with that would make you be like fuck it im goin to ua the only problem for soe is that they thought they could go over to UA half steppin and end up right back at stillman cause they can't cut it over there but UA is a good choice

Yeah.... go to UA. You will still have access to Stillman and the chicks that go to Stillman (the young ones like to fuck with the UA cats so their business aint all over Stillman's campus). Also, I was there when they closed down like half the dorms on campus. They did that shit for no reason. It affected enrollment as well.

C/S :yes: nuff said
