Where did you go to college, and would you recommend it to others?

Location: Athens, Georgia

Would I Recommend? Yes.

Why?

The University of Georgia Ranked #20 out of the top 50 public universities 9 years straight. UGA also ranks 58th overall (public and private) in the US, it's also considered to be a "Public Ivy", and we have 21 Rhodes Scholars as of this year and you know sports here is a huge thing, UGA has seven top ten rankings in the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Director's Cup, a numerical ranking based on the success of universities in all varsity sports (I know you remember how we always had the BCS but got screwed over. UGA is also the #5 party school in the nation, and has a VERY strong Greek System.

So, You get the best of both worlds here!!!
Strong Academics and an Unbelievable Social scene.

and y'know...
Many say, it's The Best College Town in the USA, and I wholeheartedly agree.

R.I.P. to our mascot, UGA VI.

Soon to be...

Location: Coral Gables, Florida (An affluent Miami Suburb, barely outside of the City).

Would I Recommend? Yes.

Why?

UMiami has top-tier academics, consistently ranked in the top academic tier of most national rankings of colleges and universities (52nd among 254 National Universities), 66% of UM students ranked in the top 10% of their high school class. UMiami has a beautiful campus (best I've seen), Career Placement Ranked #17 nationally (They really help you get your foot in the door), and The old dean of the #1 Ranked Wharton school of Business at UPenn took over the head position at UMiami's School of Business Administration.

Not to mention, GREAT sports (more football championships than any school in the nation, the current #1 Baseball team, and a top Basketball team, and has produced more NFL players than any school in the US), with a great sense of school spirit!!!

UMiami boasts The BEST looking females you'll ever see on any college campus!, it's only 9 minutes from South Beach, one of the most diverse schools in the US (students represent all 50 states and 148 foreign countries). The WEATHER is great, The vibe of Miami is amazing, the school offers everything you could want and more with The Great City of Miami as your playground!!!

..ATHENS, GEORGIA? STUCK WITH A BUNCH OF WHITE FOLKS IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE? NO THANKS, PASS ON THAT. THAT'S WHY I WENT TO GEORGIA TECH, I WANTED TO BE IN THE MIDDLE OF CIVILIZATION..

fam born and raised in gtown. that school is a straight shit hole. most of my fam graduated from ASU mainly in education which is one of their best programs. Got a aunt that teach history there. Man unless your grades were shit going to ASU was like your last resort on some real shit. Your ass can make a 10 on the ACT and get into ASU. High aids cases, wack ass dorms, shootings, etc. Ninjas come down from cali, detroit, and other places and start hustling.

Sad, HBCU's have been in decline over the past few years, huh?

My school was the best school for me and what I needed - a small liberal arts college with a strong alumni network

You gotta know what you're looking for when you pick a school
Is the financial aid consistent? More grant than loan, do they play tricks with the money once you are on campus?
Do the Alums look out? Can you call an Alum up of any race and get a meeting/job interview?
Do people graduate on time or are the distribution requirements so tricky it takes 5 years to get out?
Are there activities you can get involved in? Studying w/out activities can leave you burned out. Activities make your resume pop. My GPA was not hot but my activities showed that I could work well with people and take initiative.
I had a single room all four years. I did not have time for the roommate drama. Learn how to cook or date women that know how to cook. An empty stomach will mess up your head.
Don't buy a book that you can get for free from the campus library or from an upperclassman who already took the class. Buy the book when you graduate if you wind up enjoying it.
If you don't know what major will work for you major in business minor in english. You'd be surprised how many people in the business world cannot write a d@mn memo. If you can write a coherent sentence you stand out in the business world. Most of those cats can process data but cannot put together a document.
One crazy thing at my school:
Black folks joined frats for the social scene
White folks joined frats for the social scene and because they had tests and notes on most professors going back at least 6 years.

that's real talk.

Need experiences on the following HBCUs (preferably from engineering majors):

Howard U.
Tuskegee
FAMU
NCA&T

famu (relatively low cost, they take engineering classes with florida state students, got their shit together)

ncat (good rep in all of the engineering programs & if you're in-state it's low cost)

can't really speak on howard, but the location is nice

tuskegee (location sucks, some really fucked up profs, expensive as hell, fin aid sucks, mechanical engineering has good rep though, if i remember correctly the inventor of the supersoaker is alumnus)

wherever you go, make sure they have their accreditation (very important), research funding and on-going on campus, that the labs are well-maintained, that companies recruit there, the professors are accessible (ask around), and dont mind writing recommendations if you do your part. look for ways to get practical experience by applying for internships, summer research programs, co-ops, rotc (if it suits you, take advantage of them shits). join nsbe (national society of black engineers) and make sure the campus chapter is active. many people got jobs from going to the national conference. companies recruit like mad there. and finally, make sure that you can actually get out in four years (aside from co-ops). some places only offer some classes once a year or every two years so if you fuck up, you're stuck.

You wayyyyy out of line for that shit!

Rice is as ACADEMICALLY ELITE as they come; you must not know very much about Upper-Tier Colleges to make those statements.

A school is either an Ivy or it isn't. Your school can still be considered elite without it being an Ivy. Nothing wrong with going to a top school that isn't an Ivy. A lot of the Ivys get by on reputation and you're being taught by a teacher's aide and not the professor.

FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY!!!!!!! anyone else from here?

AND

UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI!!!!

I would recommend both to any and everyone

I graduated from here:
If you are able to get in and are "in state" then yes its a no-brainer!
But I would only recommend it to students that ARE serious about academics..and have a plan for their academic careers.
UNC does the +/- scale on grades example:
B = 3.0 GPA Points
B- = 2.7 GPA Points

Plus if you have to "Apply" to certain programs during your sophmore year....you can't automatically receive ANY degree you choose just by taking all the classes..like at some other schools. Shit is real competitive there...

UGA is great school!

Athens, believe it or not is very energetic (Downtown) around UGA.
College Towns know how to party!!! Visit Athens. Visit UGA. Have you seen the women? and in College Town's rules are a lot more
relaxed and UGA isn't the #5 party school for nothing.

Name ONE bar in Atlanta or any other 5,000,000 plus Metropolitan Area where you can drink without Proper I.D.

I'm 19 and i've done that in many bars in Athens, I wouldn't even attempt that in Atlanta...

Great Academics and Social lives at UGA, it is NOT boring in the least bit.

Fordham University

If you're a business major I would recommend it because of the alumni connections you can make, the degree is respected, and plus you have all of the major I-Banks in NYC so if you're bout your shit its not to hard to get a job. Campus life sucks like a mothefucker if you Black tho, especially a Black male.

not nitpicking, but rice is known for its research and it's endowment is almost $5 billion, trumping some ivies. no it's not an ivy league school in the true sense of the word, but neither are stanford, duke, uva, michigan, mit, amherst, williams, harvey mudd, cal tech, carnegie mellon, boston college, ucla, claremont, etc. i'm just pointing this out because they actually have good reps and are comparable and competitive with each other.

transferring from Stillman to here was the best choice I could possibly make.

Transferring ANYWHERE from Stillman is the best choice anybody could make. My dumb ass was gonna transfter from Stillman to UA after my first year (for football reasons, was tryin to do some things on that level for a sec), but I stayed at Stillman like a jackass.

Never could quite figure out how I made that decision.....:smh:

I'd love to tell you about my college but I can't because I still have a few classes until I graduate and motherfuckers are too nosey. It's bad enough that niggas are all in ya biz in real life, why fuck up BGOL when still have to see these cats everyday? I will say this though. It's a big school which someone already gave props too but they were very misleading about the shit. They always fuck up your financial aid. They'll tell you that your family contribution is 0, your need is fourteen thousand, and then offer you eleven thousand. If you ask what to do to fill the gap they point you in the direction of a job database that is mostly filled with unpaid internships or they'll suggest waiting or bartending which wouldn't be so bad if you didn't live in a college town. You see, this town is flooded with people looking for part time jobs while they go to school.

On the personal front, the sistas have formed a pussy cartel and the brothas are mostly saying "fuck it" and getting non-black girls or women who live in other cities (some of which are across the state). That gives you two choices: sneak around or drive alot. The white chicks are very receptive to brothas however sistas will chase them off. I can't tell you how many times I've seen\heard of sistas vandalizing apartments, assaulting women in the streets etc.. because a brotha chose to move on. The police used to aid and abet these hoes until they started catching false rape charges themselves. Even when proven innocent they still lost their jobs. That's not to say that the cops sympathize with the students because they always seem to jump at the chance to harass a black male student athlete.

The school has a demanding program and they teach at a high level and are highly ranked in just about everything. On the other hand the teachers don't give a fuck about anything. I had one that taught us the wrong way to teach an equation, when everyone did it wrong on the test she counted it as wrong. We pointed it out in her own notes and she refused to change the grades and said that we should've caught the mistake. I've had teachers that told us we better not call them or come to their office hours and that TAs handle that shit. Keep in mind that this TA just got off a boat and can barely speak english at all but are expected to teach you sophisticated procedures when they can't pronounce anything correctly. This school hires based on research, not teaching abilities and they force researchers to teach one semester every two years to justify the high cost of tuition.

I've lost all of my childhood friends who didn't make the cut and became haters, but on the other hand I've made new friends who are realer than anybody in my life before then, including my parents. They helped me through the toughest time in my life.

I still can't tell you that I recommend it. It'll be another year or so before I can decide, but I guarantee that your mileage may vary. Some of my former classmates went on to Ivy league grad schools and make six figures. Some went on to fold towels at Bed Bath and Beyond. My first degree flopped, and even though the second one looks like it'll succeed, it's never too late to fail. Hell, I was once hated on during a job interviewer who failed to get into my university. Accomplishment can and will be used against you. For the most part, the only people who really love my school never went there. They never had to put up with the bullshit. Most alumni who claim to love this place are fronting to look good for the wannabes.

I went to Hampton university and hell naw I wouldn't recommend it..muhfuckas are a bunch of upity prisy as negroes

Georgia Tech, thus the screen name. I was a Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech, and a hell of an Engineer, but that shit was pure hell. Voted the most unhappy campus in the nation several times. I had to work the entire time I was in college, so maybe thats why it was so bad. Them damn profs would pile homework and projects on you like you were only taking one class a semster.:hmm::lol: Took a lot of hours studing and figuring shit out on my own because several profs at GT are very intelligent, but cannot teach for shit. Mofos just walkin the class and start deriving formulas on the board. No need for rollcall. If you skipped a few classes, the probability of passing the class would be close to 3 standard deviations from the average grade in the class.:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
Whatever the hell that means, right?

Sorry man, I like Rice and all, but HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA. "Ivy League of the South". Sorry bruh. Nobody believes that but y'all. Do y'all put that on brochures??? "COME TO RICE UNIVERSITY....The Ivy League School of the South". :roflmao2:

Damn bruh, why the hatred? Do some research before you hate. Several studies have shown curriculum at or more difficult than Harvard or Yale. Where did you go homey? I didn't come up with that saying. The school didn't either. :smh:

Preach on homey.

Rice University
Houston, Texas
Although Rice is located just three miles from downtown Houston, the 300-acre campus is pastoral. The private university's nine residential colleges were inspired by Oxford and give students an opportunity to belong to a more intimate group. Each college has a "faculty master" selected by students, other masters and the president. The emphasis on student-faculty interaction is echoed in the classroom, where the median class size is 15. Many students like the fact that Rice has Division I sports, including a top baseball team. About 40 percent of students double-major, often pairing economics with engineering or political science. Overlap schools: Stanford, Harvard, MIT and Duke.

You wayyyyy out of line for that shit!

Rice is as ACADEMICALLY ELITE as they come; you must not know very much about Upper-Tier Colleges to make those statements.

Nah, I know all about Rice fam, it's an excellent school. I was laughing at the "Ivy League of the South" shit. That is maaad funny.

That's all I was saying. Hell, Rice is better than Brown and UPenn and Columbia to me.

Damn bruh, why the hatred? Do some research before you hate. Several studies have shown curriculum at or more difficult than Harvard or Yale. Where did you go homey? I didn't come up with that saying. The school didn't either. :smh:

No one is hating. I'm laughing at the "Ivy League of the South" moniker. That's all. I find it comical. Plus, the Ivy Leagues are OVERRATED. Trust fam.

Yup, learned that first hand. All you really pay for is a name; can't say that the name doesn't help, however. A few of those guys are dumb as rocks at CU, but papa knows someone in abc company who can start junior out with an 80k a year job...entry level, the rest of us start at 40k. True story.

I did too, trust. And Columbia's one of the worst. No offense.

I know I might get some slack for this but:

I would recommend it in a heartbeat. The city of Savannah can get real irking sometimes, but I had a great time at my alma mater. If you want to go in engineering it's great for that. And even more so if you want to go into business, (they have the highest accreditation a business program can have in the country). Their other programs are on point too and the professors I dealt with know their shit. A lot of stuff goes on on campus too to keep you busy- just if your roommates ask you don't go to Frozen Paradise! :smh:

On an unrelated note, this is my grad school:hmm::

Everest University my ass. I just wanted something to do...I am regretting this shit for real. But if you like the online thing and it works for you, go ahead. I do plan to get more degrees, (yeah so what? :hmm:), from Clark Atlanta, GSU and Emory, but I still wanna go here:

poetter.jpg

My boyfriend graduated from there and he loved it. His major got hated on though but the graduating class was something I had never seen before...

undergrad.... Southern Illiinois Univ
Grad- Clark Atlanta(hated it)
2nd Grad -Troy Univ or Univ of D.C. (depends how the money works out)

somebody wanted an opinion on howard university, so i'll give it to you...

honestly, it doesn't matter anymore. my opinion i mean...we got a new president this year so things are going to change.

i did hard years under swygert.

BUT i will say this...more honkies know of howard university than any other black school....period.

it may not be the BEST HBCU (very debatable) but on those america's best schools or whatever, it always seems to eek its way on there for some odd reason.

LOL @ SIU!!! Im down here for my first year of medical school! I fuckin hate carbondale!!!!!:smh::smh:

Went to Xavier University and if it wasnt for the city and the women I wouldn't recommend it to ANYONE

Winston Salem State University in Winston Salem, NC. Business Administration Major.
Every time I drive by that campus, I wanna throw shit on it.
1. Nine people in the financial aid, registrar, and billing office are under investigation right now because $100,000 in financial aid monies was: given to students who didnt qualify because of grades, given to relatives of financial aid dept. employees without undergoing the process like the other students, and financial aid employees who were students improperly gave themselves financial aid monies to pay for their classes.
Thats $100,000 that could have gone to students who really needed it!
2. I went using my GI Bill. I got bills from the university because they "forgot" to apply my GI Bill money to my tuition.
3. Most freshmen and sophmore girls went to class in pajamas or dressed like they was strippas.
4. Bad attitudes by admin employees
5. Instructors submitting grades late(which screws up financial aid, transcripts, etc.). Sometimes students wouldnt know their grade until the next semester.
6. Every time someone in admin or an instructor screws up ya shit, when you call them on it, they wanna chastise YOU and put the blame back on YOU.
7. A degree from WSSU don't mean shit in this part of the state because every employeer knows WSSU is a joke. You are better off going to UNCG or UNC Charlotte.
8. I got my Masters from Wake Forest. The faculty and staff was on point every step of the way.

My son got a packet from WSSU last month (he is a Junior in high school). I ripped that shit up and threw it in the trash!

Went to Florida State University my first 2 years. If you want to meet the finest and most diverse women the state of Florida has to offer(white women love the brothas there), then go there. And tuition/dorm is dirt cheap for in-state students. If the city of Tallahassee wasn't so damn bland and boring I would still be there.

FSUcowbb.jpg

Now I go to University of Miami. If you can afford 40-50k a yr & ridiculous apartment rates(Im talking 1000-3000/mo) then pull the trigger, but this school isn't for everyone. Would I recommend it? Hell yea, there isn't a city out there in the world like Miami. Plus it's a great academic institution with about 10k students which = smaller class sizes and more 1 on 1 time with professors, you won't feel like another number which you experience at big state schools like UF & FSU. And the University of Miami campus is only 5 min away from Coconut Grove and 15 min away from South Beach :dance::dance::dance::dance:

[FLASH]http://youtube.com/v/I82BPA5QAaQ[/FLASH]

I went to the UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE (Knoxville) because I was afforded an opportunity to walk on to the football team. Seven weeks later I promptly broke my foot and that pretty much put the brakes on that dream.

With that said, I entered the College of Engineering (specifically Mechanical Engineering). I was already a mechanic by trade so this major fit my plans well. The College of Engineering is actually well regarded due to our connections to the Department of Energy's Y-12 and K-25 plants. We're also well connected with Battelle, Boeing, Bechtel Jacobs, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. I can honestly say that having the opportunity to co-op with these companies gave me all the experience I needed in order to pursue my career. I can't speak on other colleges there although the College of Business is also well regarded on a national scale.

Campus life is interesting to say the least. Obviously it is a majority white school, but strangely there were enough black folks on campus to keep things interesting. I stayed in "No-Limit" Clement hall (this is how I derived my screename) which was coed and was where a large number of sistas stayed at. There is ALWAYS something going on at all of hours of the day and night on that campus. We were literally within a short walk of the Cumberland Ave Strip with plenty of bars, clubs, and restaurants. It seemed like 1 out of every 4 athletes got busted on the Strip for DUI:lol: Next door to Clement was Strong Hall which was an all female dorm (I hear it's now been condemned). With that setup, there was rarely any need to venture to the west end of campus near Presidential Court.

The women there were generally good looking (as you might expect at large SEC school) regardless of the color. Not saying this to start something with the sistas on here, but white women were very friendly and would often approach the brothers on campus with a smile. Again not saying this to stir something up, but sistas only approached you if you were an athlete or you LOOKED like one.

Based on my own experience, I would recommend attending UT. I don't pretend that my school is better than what it is and I'm not going to throw out a bunch of rankings to justify it. It is what it is and I'm glad I attended.
