Dressing your age??

I'm a 23 senior in college. I do a lot from Poli Sci Pres, tutoring highschoolers, swimming,Basketball, Golf to Debate team Captain. I said all that to say I dress for whatever I'm involved in that day. When I'm relaxing I'm in a t shirt some sweats with my adidas sports sandals.

I still do sean john jeans or some other brand. I might be in jeans and gravy timbs or my Fisk school shirt with sneakers.

I also wear my favorite sandals by Kenneth Cole. I'm still relaxed in jeans and t shirts. I tend to dress on my off days in Ralph Lauren polo and shorts with a nice boat sneaker.

When I'm back on campus I wear my glasses, slacks, cashmere sweaters and oxfords like A. Testoni or Harlan Brandon (gotta support the brothas).

I do suits just because.Tailored suits with a half inch shirt cuff, cuff links, pocket square and shoes. I like to pick clothes that work well with my skin tone. My ties vary in color from plum to eggplant. I pay attention to detail in my suits. Its' become so bad fellow Fiskites and or classmates call me Fonsworth Bentley. :smh:

Cologne I wear Creed Millésime Impérial or Creed Island Water among others.

"30 is the new 20"

thats why u have this problem...people are walking around 30-and up still thinking they and run around acting like they are still in thier 20s

old ass niggas doing the soulja boy in the club and shit like

if u ask me...alot of people dont act thier age period...wearing age apporiate clothing is just the start:hmm:

Having a chat with my bredren who is 35yrs and wears a size 40 something to 50 something pants:hmm: and claims that its his style and he finds it comfy. Why are adult males still carrying on this trend? I mean he can fit a couple of Ladyscorpio's in his pants and a couple more in his shirts.:o yeah What is the limit people?
Also having a belt on does NOT make the pants any smaller :smh:

What about men wearing sandals?? I have just been made aware that apparently some think that its a no no.:dunno: Is this really the case?

Ladies when is the time for us to stop wearing the poom poom shorts, the skirts that might as well be non-existent?

When does one consider it time to "act" and "look" ones age?

Peace

i'm assuming his actual size is maybe 30 something?

I could care less what somebody else wears. If you're 50 and you wanna wear baggy ass jeans and a white T or throwback...have at it. You'll prolly look crazy as hell, but that's you. I ain't buying your clothes.
But who says sandals ain't cool? Yall better ask somebody. What are you supposed to wear with shorts, Timbs? :smh: I'm about personal style, not fashion. I KNOW what looks good on me.

I think someone should post examples....I am torn of this topic. I mean, if you can rock it why not?

Dressing your age starts to matter at the age of 5! No one wants to see a 5 year old dressing like a 16 yr old and no one wants to see a 50 year old in low rider jeans and a halter top!

People always wanna say that people should dress how they feel, that's all fine and dandy, but don't expect to get respect a child if you look just like them. Don't expect to get hired if you look like you just came off the street.

Now sandals...I don't really like em. But if you on the beach then its cool, I've also seen em at all white parties that are pretty "spiffy".

Personally, I think an older kat wearing young boy styles is wack. But I think it all depends on where you are in life. A 50 year old black man with a decent white collar job isn't going to dress the same way as a 50 year old street nigga. I look at it like this, I was raised to believe the way you dress tells people who you are. Some people never grow up, that's a big problem in our community.

But at the same time, these dudes are hitting mid-life crisis and are prone to wile' out. I'm not mad at them for trying to reclaim some youth. It's just funny to see older kats that you knew dressed in fly shit back in the day dressing down like that.

The baggy clothes thing is appalling irrespective of the age of the wearer. That shit just looks absolutely retarded. Add some gaudy jewelry or a sideways baseball cap, and it looks doubly retarded. I swear to god, if I were to end up ruling the world, these would be the only black folks sent to the concentration camps. :hmm:

I stopped wearing Akademics and sh!it like that when I stopped going to the club (age 23) Since then I've been wearing Nautica and Ralph Lauren polo's jeans and casual footwear (I'm 27 now). People see and view you in a different light and you feel different also.

Grown men shouldnt still be wearing white t's at 25. Thats just how I feel. I never sagged my shit either.

Its funny the 1st black man to call someone gay or faggot is the ones usually sagging there pants/shorts and showing ass/almost the complete boxers.
30baggy600.1.jpg

I dont wake up every morning wishing to look at a man's ass and boxers walking down the street. One may say JUST DONT LOOK but hell more than 70% of the time you cant help it. Thank God most wear those BIG ASS tee shirts to cover all that fuck shit....

I rather see the cats wearing the bandana/scarf's over they're head like hoodies than seeing a cats ass....
05286004_.jpg

But where's the black women TELLING AND ENFORCING these dudes NOT to wear this shit??? Apparently 90% of the women like this wild pants sagging big ass white tee shit.... I bet 70% of the women on this board dated mahfucka's like that. I bet more than 50% the board of guys do this shit too! But have the nerve to speak on cat's not liking Plies but dress JUST LIKE THE MAHFUCKA :D:D

We've had this convo many a times on the main board. someone please tell me what exactly is getting your 'grown man" on when it comes to clothes? let me guess does it mean you can wear a suit now or something? does that make you a grown man?

and what is it with people over a certain age can't wear certain clothing? what, who programmed that into y'all heads?

let's see i'm in my 30's, i wear coogi, lrg, roca, whatever if i like it. i have about 4 dozen white t's i wear constantly. i have about 30+ pairs of nikes, 5 pairs of adidas, 2 pairs of converse and 2 pairs of reebok.

but only one pair of dress shoes. no suits, no tie. why? because walking around in a suit doesn't make me who i am. what is in my head does. a lot of people have to follow some rule or perceived notion about how to dress. i'm one of many that do not. how i dress daily does not determine my position in life. I don't answer to people. so i don't have to follow some rule saying white shirt tie and jacket. I mean if you have to then you have to, but don't place those restrictions set upon you on the rest of us. i'll go buy a tie the day someone dies that i care about and actually go to the funeral to see. until then, it's jeans...tennis shoes.....and whatever top i want to wear that day.

This is just a little something of what I wear daily. I just realized my ass is expensive to be 23. :smh: :smh: I spent a damn car note on some eyes glasses. I think I gotta problem. I have no debt at all. My bank account is quite nice. My raining day fund is in check. My post grad school is paid for. My daily living expenses are taken care of. Do I still have a problem??? :smh: Is it wrong to like have nice things when You pay for them yourself? My trust fund I hear is amazing.

They say the teens are dressing like adults... but the adults can't dress like teens...

go figure

Some adults need to grow up. This is not 1992. Your ass is not young anymore. Kwame and them damn polka dots is dead so is Biggie :dance:

Seriously adults are the role models. Many Young people need guidance and good examples of what to do.

who's the better role model then?

a guy in jeans tennis shoes and a white tee with his own prosperous company

or the guy in the suit doing the 9-5 as a bank teller.

who would you want to learn from and why? the guy in the suit, lol, just because he's wearing a "suit"?

I will learn from a kat in jeans and sneakers. I also learn from a guy wearing a suit. All I'm saying is some kids have never seen guys who wear suits except when they are in trouble.

I know the kids I mentor I show them both sides. From jeans and timbs to a suit and tie. I take them from where they live to show them the homes of some of my friends who are doing very well. I also show them the right way to make. I show them that college is possible and for them. I make sure they get scholarships etc. My friends also give them Etiquette lessons.

They get tutored in subjects they have trouble in and I also take them to Nba, NFL and PGA events that happen. We also travel to different places in my state and abroad globally for exposure. I don't look down on the kids. I meet them where they are are move them foward. Not as a mentor but a friend.

i'm not saying dress a fool and walk around with your pants around your knees or anything like that, but some take this stuff too far...

Co-Sign. Some people in this thread acting like you gotta walk around in suit at all times. I dress depending on the situation, if I am just goin to the store I will probably have on some jeans and a t shirt or maybe even some basketball shorts.

Word! That's what I said in my post. We should all dress according to our situation and surroundings...

C/S...Feet just be looking hot in Timbs in the summer time.

I really agree with personal style. Dress in the way that is appropriate for your life, career, and style.

Detroit's Finest you have a lot of style.
While I like a man dressed casual, I can appreciate an eye for classic good taste sir.

Why Thank You Izayoi.;) I just do me. That's my 4th pair of Gold and Woods:smh: I too agree dress however You wish. I'll throw on a suit, pocket square, silk tie and cuff links just to head to class in.

In this year of 2008,I feel we live in the golden age of disrespect. I'm not saying in what one chooses to wear, but how we treat each other. Meaning People of color and humans in general.

My Parents raised to be a gentleman and a young man of character. I was always taught that you did not have to spend a lot of money to dress well. I was raised to pay attention to detail and autograph everything I did with excellence from relationships to raising my Godchildren. I pay attention to detail and try to pick timeless formal clothes. These items look good on me and work well with complexion.

I wear medium to large shirts, and 34 waist.

Once I graduated HS two years ago, I just stopped wearing all my 3xl shirts and ginourmous pants that I had to put a belt on, but they scrunched up and looked weird.

Alot of people in here are seriously exaggerating. No one said you had to walk around 24/7 in a suit.

But if you're in your 30's, and you aren't morbidly obese, you do not need to wear a shirt that hangs down to your knees, and jeans that two people could fit into.

This is what I got out of the original post.

But I think it all depends on where you are in life.

Pretty much sums it up. As well as the person's maturity level and social status.

Nothing wrong with dressing comfortably at your leisure, but a man 18+ should own more than white T's, jeans, and air force 1's.

You got some "grown" men out here over 30 that don't even own more than one suit. :smh:

Depends on what you're trying to learn.

True, BUT...if there's a problem, it's that the younger guys are ONLY or ALWAYS dressing like this? You'll see older guys in sweats, tennis shoes, ball caps backwards, any weekend or after work..how often do you see the reverse, young guys well dressed? I HATE generalizing, but why aren't younger people ...teens, 20's, dressing more appropriately? There's no balance. I don't mind kids wearing baggy jeans, I'd prefer that they didn't hang off their ass, but when it's time to dress like an adult, be able to do so...know how to dress for an interview, the office, a prom. You wear formalwear at a prom, because it's a formal event. You wear a suit and tie to an interview, because you want to conform to a company's business attire standards.
I don't even wanna talk about takin pics, throwin up your set..:smh::smh::smh: THAT's THE REAL BAD LOOK!!

Its the truth though. A good amount of teens don't know how to switch it off. When you for a job interview...you should clean yourself up and make yourself presentable. It's really sad to see this.

I don't think all younger kats dress like that. I agree there's no balance though. There's been a couple of times on here where some younger kats have asked for advice on how to dress on an interview or on the job. I give them credit for taking the time to find out how they should dress. It's one thing to say "This is my style and I like it." Shit on the weekend, I'm not wearing slacks and a polo while I'm trying to fix my sink, go grocery shopping or do yard work.

I don't blame the youth for not conforming either, that's what the youth does. I'm not mad, I did it when I was younger. I think older kats are more accountable because they're supposed to show the way. When I was 14, my father took me to a tailor and had a suit made and told me "A man should always know his measurments". He taught me how to shine my shoes on some next level, military shit with a lighter!

That's not happening now and you can tell. Older kats are following behind young boys and that's wack! It's "extended childhood" and it's not a good thing.

You're right, it's not happening, and there's an "art" that's being lost. And ya had me with ya 100% until the older kats part...I don't think older guys are following younger ones...I hope not. You can't teach those who don't wanna be taught. As an older kat, I try to lead by example. But when you get your style & fashion cues from the thug & gang life :smh:
I mean, look...my dad's generation wasn't dressed without a hat. My gen wasn't dressed without a blazer. My son's gen isn't dressed unless they're IN jeans  Do you see the general trend?

Nah, I definitely see a trend. A lot of people are catching feelings with this thread, but you can kinda expect that. I didn't mean ALL older kats are following young kat styles, but some are. I know you've seen an older kat somewhere dressed like he was 19. You see that much more than you used to.

Its' no law just common sense. If You knew Better YOU WOULD DO BETTER. I was taught always to dress well no Stacy Adams suits no gators. At 23 I'm on my job in all aspects. It starts with how I step out the door in the morning. This is me 80% of the time.

Just picked more outer wear.

Hey Ladyscorpio,
Please forgive me as it seems that I am always jumping in on the tail end of things. However, this one pulled on a couple of nerve endings.
Ya see I have a wife that has the body most women envy, a 14 year old Daughter and a 16 year old Son and trying to be the cool Dad and be the Father can sometimes be a challenge at times.
This thread hits my son on the nail head. I remember him… Baby boy… Summertime just wearing a diaper… FULL OF SHIT!!! HANGING VERY LOW!!! Me crying with laughter, he is a boy baby just change his nappy… Cut to today… “Put your pants up when in this house”! But still looking as if his pants are still FULL OF SHIT!!!
Now a cat in his thirties… Still a boy… Like it or not… Still thinks like a boy… Give him time… He will grow up… We are just a bit slower then the ladies.
