Does Def Jam Still Care About The Roots?

After seeing their 2006 Def Jam debut Game Theory sell a scant 204,000 copies in the US, things don't appear to look much better for The Roots with their latest effort Rising Down. Roots' drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson expressed his frustration with the situation during an interview with Billboard magazine, saying that the group "operates far below the radar of [Island Def Jam Chairman] Antonio 'L.A.' Reid."

"He has no idea that 'Birthday Girl' isn't even on the album," says Thompson. "They don't know we shot the Rising Down video. They just know they approved an [electronic press kit] budget."

?uestlove's comments come after the single "Birthday Girl" was removed from Rising Down amid negative responses from critics and fans. While he and other group members have defended the track, calling it clever, ?uestlove freely admits the song was also partly crafted in an effort to please Def Jam executives with a radio single.

Reid refused to comment on the matter, but Def Jam's marketing director Erica Holley says Rising Down will still be heavily promoted. Holley listed appearances on The Colbert Report and David Letterman as evidence that

The Roots' established fan base make marketing opportunities easy.
The fact that such opportunities don't translate into increased album sales, begs the question, "What's next for The Roots?"

"At a time, it was safe to be the Roots," says ?uestlove. "Now as each album goes by, the risk of annihilation becomes closer and closer. That's why this album is almost our defining moment. If someone asked me, 'Do you want to release two albums and sell over 2 million copies, or do you want a 20-year career but none of your records will sell over 500,000 units?,' that's a tough question. But, looking back, I wouldn't change a thing."

The Roots is stuck in that same hole as Neo Soul:
people praise it to the high heavens
but dont put their money where their mouth is and buy it!

?uestlove has been very vocal lately. isnt he also working on an album with AL Green due out this year?

Roots crew needs to throw their middle finger up at american music companies and operate overseas

Funny you said that, I bought 5 of their albums last month.

Its time for the Roots to pull a Nine Inch Nails and stirke out on their own. Its sad they removed birthday girl from the album because people were too biased. :smh::smh::smh:

NOW THIS IS TRUE, ALSO TO ME IT SEEMS LIKE DEF JAM IS CONCENTRATING MORE ON RIHANNA AND NE-YO AND KANYE WEST, I THOUGHT CHRISETTE MICHELLE, JAGGED EDGE AND THE ROOTS CD'S WAS JUST AS GOOD BUT I GUESS IT WASNT PROMOTED BY DEF JAM LIKE IT SHOULD AND RIHANNA IS MORE MARKETABLE IN THEIR EYES....

Roots don't sell to the masses like they used to. Sad to say, they're an aging act in Hip-Hop terms since the average act in Hip-Hop is LUCKY if they have 10 year career or 3 albums, whichever comes first.

In over ten years of recording, the group has yet to go platinum. Their highest selling album, 1999's Things Fall Apart moved 906,000 units, while their first outing on Def Jam, 2006's Game Theory fell far short of that number, selling just 204,000 copies, according to the Nielsen SoundScan.

Get Erykah Badu (or another hot artist) to sing on a commercial single and they'll sell 900,000 again.

I love The Roots. Been to several live shows and have purchased their product up to Tipping Point.
But to keep it 100, I started feeling some kind of way about them once they changed their format. You used to know that you could depend on Ursala Rucker closing the album out with some ill spoken word and for whatever reason that ended. That was not wise. That would be like Pops not being on the end of a Common album.
And basically, I think they would do better as an indie band anyways. They have a solid fan base but not the typical product for mass consumption.
Tighten up or things really will fall apart.

i agree. dont blame it all on the record execs..

roots fans are REAL fans! they pay for that shit fam. dont get it twisted.

the roots just simply are not putting out good music like they used to.

phrenology, tipping pont, game theory were all sub par.. as far as the roots are concerned.

the beats dont sound as jazzy-good, and the lyrics arent as memorable. they need to re-evaluate thier old musical format and get back to that.

Thanks fam, that really summed up what I was trying to say.

That may very well be the real reason.
I mean I'm not a Roots fan so i dunno,

but i do know that;
over the years I've heard lots of people praise the roots
but don't own any of their albums! If i like someone that
much best believe I'm gonna have their albums. People
seem to think these cats can survive on praise alone.

More like the reverse these are grammy holding artist if their label isn't feeling them they are aware that with the passage of time shit comes back around.

Remember when Black TV shows where on every station now you have to search hard to find one....same with NEOsoul or talented soul/hip hop artist like the roots...shits popular for a couple years then the bullshit corporate driven music crankz out bullshit back to back and saturates the market.

What ever the case the roots ain't hurting for a gig or loot.

There is no doubt that the right label can help keep an artist fresh and relevant or let them try to live off name alone and die. DEF Jam doesn't seem to be the place for an established artist, in the game for a while, that likes to keep their shit fresh and innovative. I mean take a look at Common, Snoop, Mary J, and Mos Def they've been in the game for a while, I guess there's a reason why they are on Geffen Records.

lol DX gave "The Tipping Point" a classic rating... i'm not the biggest roots fan- but that is crazy. and again i'm not a big Roots fan- but do they have ANY classics? is "THings Fall Apart" actually classsic... or just their must known album?

Shoulda been a big pop hit. Perhaps too "rock" for some of the fans. Still one of their most identifiable crossover tracks. They need more guest stars like Cody Chestnutt and Badu. The group is somewhat undefined, on their own, as far as the masses go.

but what type of promotion can they do outside of buying ads in magazines and trying to get their music played on radio? there's only so much a label can do with a fringe group
