Does Def Jam Still Care About The Roots?

The dont make music people would care to listen to, they are to caught up in out smarting everyone instead of making some hot music.

Maybe you aren't smart enough to realize they make hot music :hmm:

And yeaaaahhhh I'll see you later
BIG UPS... TO ALL MY HATERS!:hmm:

im a huuuuge roots fan, from the first time I heard from the ground up ep, on a white label pressed from europe when I was in college

but I hate to say after things fall apart, they have a taken a rather different direction that is not as appealing to me aa an unadulterated hip hop fanatic

to me things fall apart was their masterpeice, from the way it was mastered (very cool techniques) and the depths of the covers and songs

black thought is one of the illest lyricist, but something tells me they are not all in sync as the recent music just isnt swangin

Get Erykah Badu (or another hot artist) to sing on a commercial single and they'll sell 900,000 again.

Co-sign.Their on some hollywood shit now. That birthday girl song is ass.How can you go from that real hip hop street shit like "Clones" or "Enchanto",or even mellow songs like "you got me" or "break u off" to that white shit? "Birthday Girl" yeah that's clever alright. They're trying to appeal to a different audience(white people).:hmm: They need a good commercial single and the album will sell It self.

You act like "Birthday Girl" is the only song they can do.:smh: What about "75 Bars" or "Get Busy"? The TWO SONGS AND VIDEOS RELEASED BEFORE "Birthday Girl"?

The Roots are the shit. All their album are good and the new one is no exception.

But to answer the original post...no Def Jam doesn't care about them. Def Jam doesn't care about any of it's quality artists (which it has very few of). Fuck Def Jam...and the music industry in general.

That may very well be the real reason.
I mean I'm not a Roots fan so i dunno,

but i do know that;
over the years I've heard lots of people praise the roots
but don't own any of their albums! If i like someone that
much best believe I'm gonna have their albums. People
seem to think these cats can survive on praise alone.

People praise the Roots on the strength of their live shows. There are very few artists that I would pay to see perform, but the Roots are one of them. (Along with EWF, Prince and Jill Scott)

The material that they've put out in their albums is not as strong as it used to be. The weird thing is that I don't blame the lyrics, because Black Thought has only gotten better with time. I think they are making a conscious effort to have a radio single, and that interview with ?uestlove just verified that.

Do The Roots "care" about making commercial albums that Def Jam can more easily promote? Obviously, no.

They just debuted in the Top Ten again. They do fine for what they do.

but what type of promotion can they do outside of buying ads in magazines and trying to get their music played on radio? there's only so much a label can do with a fringe group

they have to promote that shit themselves if nothing else.....

I've been a roots fan for years and I just attributed them not selling as much due to their evolution from the neo-soul, open mic night, Love Jones type vibe of the late 90's to a more cutting edge sound. Really if you think about the real pioneers of that era already have, D'Angelo, Badu, N'degeceollo (sp?) but that's another post. That coupled with the fact that a lot of people only heard and liked a few singles of the Roots singles over the years, called themselves fans and never purchased an album. Now they opine for the old Roots.
I hope I am not coming off as an elitist, but if you actually listened to their older work and compared it their work now you would see the improvement. Just my opinion.

Its time for the Roots to pull a Nine Inch Nails and stirke out on their own. Its sad they removed birthday girl from the album because people were too biased. :smh::smh::smh:

or pull some prince shit...and say fuck the music companies, i do their own shit...

they only care about what the fans care about....i.e. what makes them the most money.

friom what im reading..this is about record sells and money.

and most of the roots fans really didnt support their album........(go check out the thread that was made that gave the album away for free).

ill admit...i downloaded it for free also...but after i had a listen...i went out and brought it...real talk.

thats the bizness...nothing shady about it....this is how shit is done.
if you ran a record compaay, you wouldnt want to constantly waste your time and money on a artist or group that wasnt selling shit either. sometimes you just have to except shit for what it is.

listen to your radios and look at the video that get heavy rotation.
even though im feeling their style sometimes.....the majority of the people that BUY music werent. maybe they should have went the Andre 3000 route.....cater more to the white audience.
