Red Ring of Failure
Is your Xbox 360 still working? You must be one of the lucky ones.
By Mike Smith

Over 18 million Xbox 360s have sold through since the console's launch in November 2005, but just how many of those are still working? Squaretrade, a company that specializes in providing warranty support to purchasers of electronic goods from various manufacturers, claims 16%:smh:of Xbox 360s experience a hardware failure within six to ten months after a warranty purchase.

That's fucking pitiful! I've worked in the consumer electronics industry, and anything beyond 3% that gets pass the factory Q/A checks is considered a complete abortion! At 10% line failure, before they even leave the factory, fucking heads start to roll and suppliers are given the boot. 16% at the consumer level! Holy shit!!

Later in the article they say 16% is a UNDERESTIMATE and that the failure rate is probably higher since some people bypassed Squaretrade and were serviced directly by Microsoft.

Damn...

Oh and I've heard about modding it and adding cooling fans, and keeping it flat, and all the other bullshit you need to do to prolonge it's life

Here's some other things you want it to work for more than a year.
Don't forget to also ...

- Sit it on a block of dry ice
- Keep your room a 20% humdity and 65 degrees.
- Install a laminar flow air circulation system in your room.
- Sing gentely to XBOX at night.
- Don't just startle XBOX, kindly whisper into its CPU that you're going to insert a disc in its drive before playing.
- Compliment XBOX on how good it looks before you get ready to play it.
- Tell XBOX its means so much more to you than any other system you've ever played.
- Tell XBOX it prettier than PS3.
- Don't feed XBOX after 12 and never EVER get it wet
- Don't look at XBOX the wrong way, it doesn't like it.
- Don't talk disparaginly about XBOX while it's in the room, it doesn't like that either.

Man fuck that shit ... My Atari 2600 NEVER had a problem just playing for hours on end.
My NES, after I damn near collapsed a lung blowing on the catridge, it worked just fine once ON.
My PS2, never a glitch.

XBOX, what a hunk of shit.

I think microhard sends out something to fuck our shit up. First time was crazy I broke a record online with tiger then it broke. Then now my gold membership just ran out and I didnt renew it. I think they are pissed. It was fine up until that. And now it's freezing up that's just a sign that my xbox will be broke very soon.

First one I brought had the Red Ring of Death fresh out the damn box.

:angry::angry::angry: FUCK X-BOX

Their customer service is .... decency enough I guess, but still, Ninjas don't want to mail shit in and wait, Ninjas want to play,:angry::angry:thats what the fuck we buy the games for, TO PLAY THEM.

If they don't make a announcement about Metal Gear going multi-platform like Devil May Cry did, I might just switch to the Dark Side.

my cuzin last week told me his xbox
did da infamous red ring of death, he pissed as fukk:angry:

Micro-sukks at its finest:smh::smh:

Got the red rings, sent mine to MS 3 or 4 weeks later I get a "reburbished" 360 that looked clearly used. Sold that bitch a couple months later o Ebay. Working on buildin' a PC now.

Got mine launch night. Died 3 months later. Been on my second Xbox since Jan. 2006. Got my PS3 Christmas 2006. Died 2 months later. Been on my second PS3 since March 2007.

So you see, to me they're both tied! The Xbox did last a month longer than the PS3 did!

i aint even tryna be funny.

my xbox has never acted up on me, and i love it.

*knock on wood*

man, my shit gets pkayed at a reasonable rate, and it is fine.

i guess everyone that has prblems, may be having them because you might stand your xbox up. DONT!!!!

lay it on its side, and you might gt better results.

You should also keep it in a cool ventilated place. I had my 360 for about two years before I suffered the red rings of death a few months ago. All the best game are multi system now, so the only franchise games that i'm gonna miss out on that i've enjoyed on the ps2 are God Of War & Ratchet & Clack.

I have never had any problems with my XBOX. I lay it on its side, keep it cool, and I also dont sit there and play it for days straight either. I may play for 2-3 hours here and there but I dont sit there all day and night playing.

not exactly, they use HDi, which is one of the options for blu ray.. but the blu ray board opted for another codec (there are 3) that is not from microsoft (which pissed microsuck off)
Sony Continues Work on Blu-ray.
Unconvinced that Toshiba’s HD-DVD plan would be deliverer on time, Sony continued work on Blu-ray. Despite promises that HD-DVD would be much cheaper to produce and could be delivered by the existing DVD player manufacturers with just minor adjustments to their assembly lines, by the end of 2005 no HD-DVD players had arrived.

Meanwhile, Sony continued to build up support behind its technically superior Blu-ray, which promised to store 25 GB per disc layer compared to 15 GB for HD-DVD. In addition to technical work, Sony had also assembled a coalition behind Blu-ray that included critical content producers.

In 2004, Sony had bought MGM, expanding its influence. The next year, Eisner announced his departure and Disney aligned behind Blu-ray. The majority of the DVD Forum members also announced support for Blu-ray in addition to the official recommendation of HD-DVD. Among them was HP, which joined the Blu-ray Disc Association in early 2004.

_______

Blu-ray Says No to Microsoft, and Vice Versa: 2004.
HP in turn invited Microsoft to also support Blu-ray for playback under Windows, which HP would need for the Blu-ray equipped PCs it sold. According to an article by Peter Burrows in BusinessWeek, Microsoft demanded that the Blu-ray group adopt its WinCE-based iHD for developing interactive content (since renamed to HDi) in order to sign on.

Somewhat ironically, the Blu-ray group had already adopted BDj, an interactive authoring system developed by HP
. BDj is based upon Sun’s Java platform. Content developed for BDj is intended to be easily adapted for delivery not just on Blu-ray disc, but also over cable systems.

The Blu-ray Disc Association “did a three month side-by-side evaluation and concluded that iHD didn’t offer enough advantages to make a switch worthwhile,” Burrows reported. “Microsoft was livid.” In September 2005, Microsoft and Intel announced their exclusive support for HD-DVD, which had already included HDi as a mandatory part of the specification.

Bill Hunt of Digital Bits explained to InternetNews that Toshiba was ready to drop HD-DVD and join Blu-ray in 2005 until an unnamed company, which Hunt believes to be Microsoft, “pressured the company to stick with HD DVD since so much time and money had been invested in it.”

“Everything I’ve been told,” Hunt said, “is a lot of people in the HD DVD camp were ready to throw in the towel in late 2005 and something kept them from doing it. Microsoft seems to be the company that is running around crowing the loudest about HD DVD.”

I thought they used a MS codec but not their HDI interactive menu system... they're two different things.

I thought they used a MS codec but not their HDI interactive menu system.

the ms codec is vc-1 which is basically an alternative to h.264

VC-1 is an evolution of the conventional DCT-based video codec design also found in H.261, H.263, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4. It is widely characterized as an alternative to the latest ITU-T and MPEG video codec standard known as H.264/MPEG-4 AVC.

Although widely considered to be Microsoft’s product, there are actually 15 companies in the VC-1 patent pool (as of August 17, 2006).

So sony is only the face of blu ray as MS is the face of vc1.

(info from wikipedia)

if you go to http://www.highdefdigest.com/ you can go to blu ray reviews and each codec used for each movie is listed. each is different and some are a combination of codecs for different discs and/or different codecs for each 480p/720p/1080i/1080p setting....

which dvd uses what codec and why? beats me

but vc-1 seems the simplest to use to date over h.264
