Now slow your roll there dog, the D isn't NYC by any means but the Downtown is one thing Kwame was getting right. All the stuff you mentioned was here YEARS before Kwame took office. You got TONS of residential units going up all the way from midtown to downtown. It used to be true that cats left downtown at 5 and didn't come back 'til work the next day, but that's not true anymore either. Hell, I went to school downtown and sometime when I go, I don't recognize the place with all the new shit going up. The real problem with the D is that around the late 50s early 60s all the white folks started leaving when black folks from the south came up for the auto jobs (white flight). After the riots in 68, that put a wrap on any euros living south of 8 mile. When the white folks left, so did the tax base. The various administrations have tried to run the city like it was still +2.5 mil population when it's just under 1 mil now. So don't get it twisted.
I would take exception to the reference to Coleman Young taking Detroit down....In fact what he did for Blacks in Detroit inspite of the fact they were after him from day one....There were virtually no black cops or firefighters in Detroit prior to Coleman....he changed all that....He built residence especially for Senior citizens that was affordable...that shit did not exist before Colemans tenure.....He eliminated "Stress" a secton of the Police Dept that whole thing was the entrapment and murking of Black Folks....He made it difficult for outsiders to come in and cosmetically rehab inner city housing and pawn that shit off on people struggling to purchase and sustain a home .....and he did that by raising the acceptable standards of The FHA....and still managed to make whites who were not predisposed invest big money in the city ( Renaissance center is an example)...He also stopped even the Federal Goverment from hijacking control of the Citys water supply.....If you from the "D" and are Black you usually give props to Coleman for being a great Mayor that did great things for Detroit...especially for Blacks.....He was a politician and mos def had his flaws But the man was Brilliant andslick and had a real love for his people.....White folks are usually the ones that diss Coleman......Kwame IS NOT Coleman....I'm sure he'd like to be....but he ain't
BTW The People Mover was suppose to be the 1st step in a Subway system for Detroit That Jimmy Carter promised he would help get the Federal funds to build....The Iran Hostage situation happened and Carter lost his presidency.....They never got back around to Detroit....You want to talk about The "D"....know your history

You must not have been downtown in a minute. It use to be terrible maybe 3-4 years ago but real progress as far as fixing it up with greenery, paving the roads, building new lofts, bringing in businesses, etc happened just before the MLB all star game was played here in 04 or 05. That really help to jump start a real turn around downtown. Shortly after that we hosted the Superbowl and downtown was really together. It has done nothing but get better downtown since.

left office Detroit was in the hole damn near 130mil..explain the difference. Archers admin was corrupt as hell, the school board prez stole a shitload of money from the school and used it and city resources on his wedding to the chick that lost tryin to run against Kwame for mayor the last election. He inherited a city plagued by problems.
Kwame may be immature amongst other things, but he has made some major head way for Detroit. Go downtown, shit is almost as clean as it was for superbowl. Ride down Woodward and look at all the new construction homes and what not, lets not mention the new Casinos. Detroit is better than it was 10 years ago.

I co-sign what everyone said about the resurgence of downtown. I live in the heart of downtown, and I love it. It's too bad that he wasted so much potential and will allow this scandal to become his legacy rather than the good things he's done for the city.

Them leaving the D, the auto companies shipping jobs overseas, union-busting and the riots (caused by institutionalized racism and police brutality) are what fucked up Detroit.
A lot of what fucked up Detroit is what fucked up Baltimore, Gary Indiana, Newark NJ, Oakland, and other industrial centers that have seen their economies sucked up by corporate greed.
