Have you ever heard a remake/cover of a song that made you fall in love with the original all over again?

Have you ever heard a remake that you thought was a total injustice to the original song?

One summer I went to see India.Arie at a free concert in Centennial Park. Now I have always loved Bobby Caldwell's "What You Won't Do For Love" but she sung it so well that the original is now part of my daily rotation.

Then once I saw a concert with Vesta Williams who I already loved. And she song her version of Stevie Wonder's "You and I" and I rushed out and bought the album that featured it.

Other remakes I absolutely love:

Luther Vandross' For Always, Forever, For Love by Lalah Hathaway
Cherelle's "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" by Robert Palmer
Stevie Wonder's "Ribbon In The Sky" by Intro
Carlos Donida's "I Who Have Nothing" by Luther Vandross & Martha Wash (such a totally different rendition from Shirley Bassey's version)

On some show that BET had for Smoky Robinson a few years back John Legend sung Quiet Storm and IMO he sung it better than smoky, he made it his own.

"Killing me softly"

Everybody knows Lauren Hill remade it, but Al B Sure didnt do a bad job at it...Luther on the other hand messed me up when he didnt change the words...

"Always and forever"

Luther nailed it, but Heatwave is classic

Oh my god, I would have loved to hear that.

Now I recently watched "El Cantante" about the life of salsa singer Hector Lavoe.

I had heard his music living in Brooklyn when I was young but didn't know who he really was. Well in the movie, Marc Anthony sings the title song (written by Ruben Blades) VERY WELL. I downloaded the original to compare and it made me love the song all over again.

I remember when I watched heard Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You, I was like wow she did an amazing job. I had loved the original by Dolly Parton

"I Who Have Nothing" was originally done by Ben E. King.

Yes you're right. Carlos Donida supposedly wrote it but there is a dispute about that.

The melody was supposedly based on something he wrote. Kind of like Steely Dan’s “Do It Again” melody is based on Horace Silver’ “Song For My Father”

Paul Young- Everytime You Go Away

Hall & Oates- Everytime You Go Away

I kinda liked Paul Young's version until I saw Daryl Hall perform it on that Apollo special with Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin. I was about 7 or 8 at the time but I've been a Hall & Oates fan ever since.

Another one I like is this:

My daughter likes the Jewel version

I'D RATHER GO BLIND - RUBY TURNER-

I find that whenever I hear any body else does any of the songs she sings you can't help but think about hers because their seems to be no one that can do it better.

I think the original was before my time (I actually like this one better though)...

[FLASH]http://youtube.com/v/hVHUniFdgN4[/FLASH]

DC & especially Beyonce made some great music... On one hand I hate them for their "Bills, Bills, Bills" whore anthems and "I need a soldier" fuck all non-gangstas anthems and think R&B is worse than rap because people think it's so innocent, but they do have talent and I love a lot of their music.

I think you mean Meli'sa Morgan. I don't believe Stephanie Mills ever covered this tune but, I could be wrong. Stephanie did How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore? and I remember her performing (great) that song in concert.

Vesta - Knocks Me off My Feet (Stevie Wonder)
Gerald Albright - So Amazing (Luther Vandross)
W. Houston - I'm Every Woman (Chaka)

There are a few others

Avant & KeKe Wyatt= " my First love"
Rene & Angela= "my first love"(the original)

I think avant and keke did a great job!!!
