Soulja Boy Makes History With 3 Million "Crank That

I don't like the song, but when you look at what he's accomplished in less that two years, using a boot leg copy of fruity loops, a PC, and a digital camera...

What would be interesting is if he downloaded his copy of fruity loops from good ole BGOL !!

Impressive feat for anybody...not the less a 17 year old.

I still don't like the song.

People why can't we just appreciate the young brother's accomplishment, we don't have to enjoy the deed

Kids just being kids, having fun. At what point do our kids have the right to just be kids without the weight of the whole damn world on their shoulders. I don't care for the music but the bigger picture says, he used his head to make his dream happen as an individual. He hasn't sold dope in none of son nor shot any mofos every other verse, so I give props to the young fella.....Now I hear a lot of cats talking about how things are going bad or not better with us or always complaining about white folks then complain about black folk who don't do things as the way you would as an individual......well this is my question for most of you old head.....If you are/were so much in a better state, should you not be thanking white people for making you who you are? Think about it, If you got a problem with a young ass kid for his successes in AMERIKKKA, then the flip side says you should be pleased with the lack of respect and 2nd class citizenship that has been passed down upon generation after generation, because things were better for us based on some of the replies...............just something to make ya think........

Cause if my son sat in his room with the bare necessities and pulled an accomplishment like that, I'd be happy for him, not for the content of music but because he had a vision and he made it happen. That yaaaahhhhh song is no more than an extension of the Dave Chappelles, Howard Dean Skit with a beat behind it.........Sometimes you guys come off like your kids never joke nor smile, like they in the crib with the chuck d mug on at birth!

regardless of what people are gonna say, he's still gonna do what pays the bills...however the people who co-sign this clown not only accept his music but the content and where it stands to the generation that adores it...i personally dont care for it because it sucks because it really does suck but 3 million ringtones over gold selling record regardless of the content isnt that bad...just bad for him because he will be dubbed the MC Hammer of this new generation with even less money.

LIKE MOST SONGS AND ALBUMS JUST LET THE MUSIC LIVE CUZ IT WILL EVENTUALLY DIE...

good for him. but bad for hip hop. it is complete and absolute rubbish. All I hear is hip hop dying...

why does every body hate soulja boy

If everyone hates him then why does he have a gold album and 3 million ringtone downloads to his name :hmm:?

I don't "hate" dude. I don't know him so I can't form an opinion about him as a person. I just don't like his music and I refuse to listen to or buy it. That's not hating. That's exercising my right as a consumer.

They're not selling his album in this thread...so face it you just came in here to hate...you don't have to say anything in order not to buy an album... :dunno:

It aint my type of sound, but I do respect a 17 year old youth doing something positive. I haven't heard him rap about guns (ok, supersoaker don't count!), drugs, or any type of violence. He's just a kid having fun and getting paid more then most adults twice his age, including most of us. I can't hate.

nobody is hating on his money. but hearing it is like expecting some rugged ass graffiti but gett'in some crayon, construction paper, macaroni glued up shit instead. its the equivalent of "how much is that doggy in the window" being at the top of the charts. this low-brow shit is what appeases the minds and tastes of black folks nowadays? that shit is sad... Imagine if shit just keeps gett'in dumber, and dumber, and dumber...

If you use history as an indication, you shouldn't be surprised at all to see Soulja Boy be nominated for a Grammy. The Grammys never had any sort of credibility when it came to Hip-Hop/Rap music to begin with. The first rap Grammy went to the Fresh Prince during an era when way better rappers existed. When it comes to rap and grammys, it's not so much about what's good, as it is about what can be understood to the people who gives out the awards, and those people don't 'get' rap as an artform. Never did.

If the Grammys cared about the art of MCing at all, there would be a Best Lyricist Award.

We're talking about an Awards Show who gave awards to songs like 'Baby Got Back', 'Gettin Jiggy wit it', and 'Get Yo Freak on'. They tend to give the awards to the most popular act, without taking lyricism (An element of rap just as important as any other element) into consideration.

I don't know why ya'll are so surprised.

Hip hop is a culture. That won't die anytime soon.

Rap is the music tied to the culture. Please don't get them mixed.

That said, when I first heard it, I honestly liked the song. But that don't mean that I listen to it now. I have moved on.

I congratulate the young man for his success. But as far as the Grammys, I don't really follow them. They have become too much of a popularity contest. Now if the song WINS a Grammy, come talk to me.

You're absolutely right...still doesn't make it acceptable though...

Expressing my opinion is "hating?" Nah dude this is hating;

"I hate Souljah Boy. I hope that nicca gets cancer in his left titty and his momma dies and his second cousin becomes a stripper and gets gangrene in her left leg and becomes a novelty act called Hopalong. This dude makes me so angry! I wish he'd die! ARRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!!!"

Final thought, enough bout soulja boy and let's face some real issues like the presidential primaries and setting some guidelines like teaching the younger brotha's to rock the vote, rapp the vote, which ever preferred or to respect their elders or something of that nature...:) :) :)

My question to yall is what do you folks think is good for club music for teenagers since you dont approve of this?

Something that doesn't make them sound retarded when they vocalize. I'm sure there's some kid out there can produce something other kids like that doesn't sound like it was penned on a bumpy ride in the back of some short yellow bus.

But why discredit something thats already successful

wouldn't you discredit shit if you got some in your mouth? or would you develop a taste for it because you saw infants successfully feasting on their feces?
I dont understand. But my argument is since this is popular amongst the young folks and its marketed toward the young folks, anyone else will more than likely hate it. But no one can come up with an alternative song or type of music that compete with it when making a song for club going teenagers .
So its not Soulja boy's fault that his music is successful. Its the taste in music of the teenagers today who accepted his type of music. Also some kids may not have a mind of their own, so if they see that their peers like it, they will like it to fit in.
Its like selling dope. Of course its not a good look to many but there are people willing to buy it, thus the seller makes money.
So if teenagers had higher standards than Souljah boy o this post wouldn't exist.

Something along these lines:

Thats a good track but if they bump this at the club, they will lose money if they play stuff like that. Especially clubs in the south. This sounds like a song for more mature people. Its not a dance song. A dance song is based on simplicity.

I would suggest something like this too

But this type of music is for young people 20 and up and mostly with a college background of some sort.

I don't hate this music because young people like it, I would hate it if Methuselah danced to it daily. I hate it because his lyrics are stupid, his delivery is weak, and the beats are built to appeal to the tastes of women who are too stupid to keep their asses off the stripper pole. I refuse to value Hip Hop by how quickly it inspires some hooker to get up and shake her ass. I don't see how wanting artists to exert the brainpower required to write lyrics of substance is asking for alternative or new tyoe of music. Neither do I think that As far as suggesting better, I can think of plenty of shit. 93 'til Infinity, for instance, by the Souls of Mischief blows this Soulja Boy crap away. I selected them because they are an example of a set of kids who not only produced hot dance-tunes, but also wrote cohesive lyrics, and spit them with style. One of them had been accepted into Stanford University, so these kids' success wasn't limited to street corners. However, these songs are hardly new, and of course radio and the mass media will focus on new content for youth markets. Unfortunately, there are few crews making new music that isn't trying to capitolize on this trend towards dumbing down lyrical content. For some reason, it seems there is difficulty in pairing a hot dance tune with lyrical substance.

These kids aren't buying into his music as much as they are buying into his image. They see him, see the video, are stunned by the visual impact of a simple jig, which sets the stage for them to buy into anything that comes out the mouth. No matter how stupid. Or intelligent. He could just as well spit hot rhymes as well as the cah-cah he's squirting now. He could just as well work to elevate the art as well as dumb it down.

so what you're saying is that soulja's music is for the kiddies, like Mary Had A Little lamb, and that southern teenagers aren't smart enough, or sophistcated enough to feel anything beyond soulja Boys' drivel? They are THAT limited?

and thats ok with you?

Yup. Exactly. But its not ok with me. Its a issue. The issue is lack of high standards. But the kids transition from the barney songs to the snap music to the more sophisticated mature music. Each transition of music caters to their audience. We all use to listen to stupid stuff back in the day.

Try playing little brother at an 5 yr old birthday party, them lil kids will fall asleep. Give them crank dat then they will act a fool.

The only way he could get to the level to where he got good beats and lyrics is to cater to an older, mature crowd. But if his current audience accept what he puts out now, then theres no need to be more creative. He might know his lyrics suck but if they make him a buck then hes stuck.
