In case you missed it

Ricky Hatton has been around since 2004 or so after he beat Kostya.

But he has DUCKED Junior Witter, a decent Jamaican Brit.

Now that he's lost ...

How was that fight with Kostya? I've always enjoyed his bouts.

And speaking of upcoming fight cards ... I'm looking forward to UFC 79 this coming Saturday, Dec. 29th.

I told my dad I was gonna take him (as part of his Christmas gift) to a local sports bar to get our eat on and check that shit out. I'm trying to get him into all types of MMA ... but he's a tough sell, lol.

Sokoudjou is one tough man.

Winner of this BETTER get a title shot.

peace

Should be good, no doubt.

I'm meeting up with my dad in the early evening and we're gonna go out for eats and to a sports bar near his place to check out the PPV. Should be fun. I told him it was part of his Christmas gift (dinner / fights / quality time with his son), haha.

I think SILVA's got Liddell's number. I watched UFC ALL ACCESS last night and they profiled dude's training. He's a beast and is very skilled aerobically and anaerobically. Training with plenty of blood/oxygen testing ... pool work ... gym time ... cardio' ... weights ... plenty of the on-ground stuff done with snorkel in place (to alter his breathing patterns / strengthen his lungs and check for lactic acid build-up) / ice water cool down (to speed up recovery time following grueling training), etc.

I hope GSP's got Hughes' number in their rubber match. He definitely dominated him in their 2nd fight ... it's just too bad that his reign was short-lived, 'cuz Serra truly had him beat in their fight months later (back in April 2007).

Johniz,

Lol @ the MARK CUBAN image with "Fight FOR Me" in regards to his upstart organization. When does that shit officially get underway, or has it already?

That cat's all over the place. Mavs games / , Dancing with the Stars, business / HD NET (network) / owns the rights to Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous supposedly (actually thinking about Paris Hilton as a possible replacement one day of Robin Leach, lol), clockin' more dough. What doesn't that muthafucka do?

Looking forward to those fights tonight. I'ma get me my grub on and kick back (I'm really hoping GSP performs well in Pt. III).

Is it a one-time thing ... or will McCarthy be venturing over there for a fair # more events? I noticed last night with the PPV that Dean, Yamasaki & Mazzagatti reffed all the events. The LIVE PPV BROADCAST LAST NIGHT (Saturday, December 29th, 2007) was as follows (I was hoping they'd have shown an additional fight or two):

- GUILLARD/CLEMENTI
- MACHIDA/SOKOUDJOU
- PALALEI/SANCHEZ
- SILVA/LIDDELL
- HUGHES/ST. PIERRE

.

The UFC'll miss him. Big John was/is the man. "Let's get it on!" is the classic catch phrase, for real. Ain't nothin' fuckin' with that or his stature (6'4" - 260lbs). I didn't realize he's had such a decorated law enforcement career, and props to dude on his involvement with MMA long-term too (opened his own school in recent memory too). Good read:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McCarthy_(referee)

"Although retired as a referee for UFC events, he is a tactical instructor at the LAPD police academy and trains combat referees at REFS Academy (Ring Experienced Fight Specialists). [2] On December 31, 2004, McCarthy served as the referee for a fight held on the K-1 Dynamite! card at the Osaka Dome in Osaka, Japan between MMA legend Royce Gracie and Sumo legend-turned-fighter Akebono Taro. On December 7, 2007, McCarthy stated that he is retiring as the UFC's head referee after he officiates the Roger Huerta/Clay Guida match at The Ultimate Fighter: Team Hughes vs. Team Serra Ultimate Finale card on December 8, 2007.[3] He has signed on as an analyst for The Fight Network's coverage of UFC events.[4]

Personal life

In Sep 2006 John McCarthy with the help of various investors opened his first MMA school in Valencia, CA. This 16,000 sq ft gym is considered to be one of the largest MMA schools in California. His dozen or so instructors teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, kickboxing, boxing, wrestling, judo and MMA. In January of 2007, he was awarded his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt. Currently, McCarthy lives in Los Angeles with his wife and children.

On December 8th, 2007, McCarthy announced his retirement from the Octagon, upon being signed by The Fight network, full time."

good for big John. He always seemed like a good dude, even though he stole his catch phrase from Boxing Ref. Mills Lane.

Can't forget CRO COP.

His record once coming over to the UFC this past spring has been anything but stellar.

I wonder of CroCop had already seen his best days or if he was too overconfident and not confident enough against Kongo.

And Choi is a big man with fairly good athleticism considering his size.

Cro Cop looked very hesitant even in his win against Eddie Sanchez when he was first introduced to the UFC. People were expecting fireworks ... but didn't necessarily get it. The Gonzaga fight was pretty quick. Whereas KONGO had very good strength and endurance ... and seemed not to let Mirko get much off at all during their square off.

I think Rogan said a fight or two back about Cro Cop ... maybe he merely hadn't trained enough in cage/octagon-like structure(s). It's a whole different ball game really (or so it would seem for him).

Thanks, Johniz.

I'd meant to add some more linkage the other day too.

UFC 79 Payouts + 50K Bonuses

I know I'm a tad late with this but I've been on a drinking bender the past week and now I'm starting to see pink elephants so it's somewhat safe to post again now that I can find my keyboard which I used to open beer bottles with over the holidays. I still can't find my lucky bottle opener... oh well, watch to see what creative ways were used to circumvent that minor annoyance:

UFC 79 MAIN CARD:

Georges St. Pierre ($160,000 + $50,000 “Submission of the Night” bonus) def. Matt Hughes ($100,000)

Chuck Liddell ($500,000) def. Wanderlei Silva ($150,000) — both fighters received an additional $50,000 “Fight of the Night” bonus

Eddie Sanchez ($46,000 + $50,000 “Knockout of the Night” bonus) def. Soa Palelei ($5,000)

Lyoto Machida ($60,000) def. Rameau Sokoudjou ($40,000)

Rich Clementi ($28,000) def. Melvin Guillard ($10,000)

UFC 79 PRELIMINARY CARD:

James Irvin ($16,000) def. Luis Cane ($5,000)
Manny Gamburyan ($20,000) def. Nate Mohr ($6,000)
Dean Lister ($22,000) def. Jordan Radev ($5,000)
Roan Carneiro ($10,000) def. Tony DeSouza ($7,000)
Mark Bocek ($6,000) def. Doug Evans ($3,000)"

Too bad he didn't carry that swagger in against CroCop

True. He was pussified against Cro Cop (even though Mirko didn't destroy him that fight).

I had to laugh at my pops last Saturday. He was complaining that too many of the fighters had weak boxing skills. "If only these guys were better trained at boxing ... come on ... stop going for the uppercuts. Throw some FUCKING JABS already!!"

Palelei got punked on his payout too:

"Eddie Sanchez ($46,000 + $50,000 “Knockout of the Night” bonus) def. Soa Palelei ($5,000)"

NSAC MEDICAL SUSPENSIONS - UFC 79:

http://mmafever.blogspot.com/2008/01/nsac-medical-suspensions-ufc-79.html
http://mmafever.blogspot.com

"Here's the NSAC "Do not pay this fighter until" list of medical suspensions from UFC 79. It's not at all bad except for the Australian, Soa Palelei who suffered a nasal fracture and a left orbital fracture who will be out indefinitely until June 27, 2008.

People bag on Eddie Sanchez for many reasons but I don't because that fucker has the ability to crush the face of a 6'4" 262Lb monster and collect a 50K bonus for doing it too. Look out for fast Eddie in 2008... hopefully he'll fight Gabriel Gonzaga."

MMA Pic of the Day - GSP, Hughes, Rogan

This picture was taken immediately following GSP's 2nd round win against Matt Hughes at UFC 79. I love Rogan's expression however, I'm not sure if Rogan has an affinity for Hughes or a general disgust about GSP's new Affliction line of T-shirts.

You be the judge."

Here's a funny picture from 12/29/07. Check JOE ROGAN's expression!

Damn, Chuck is reaping the rewards.

I can't believe the UFC a damn near billion dollar company is STILL paying fighters 5K a fight. No wonder Frank Shamrock left and nevr looked back.

And Quinton says PRIDE was worse!!!
