Wow, it jumped from $.75 to $3.00 in 30 years (and half of that in just the last 2). Check the rate of inflation of other goods and services since the '60s and '70s. Gas could easily cost around $15/gallon by now (at least). $3.00 is CHEAP as hell. Stop buying crappy gas guzzling shit like SUVs and HumVees.
