Yes, most Pakistani's are Muslim, there's a very small minority of Hindus, Zororastrians, and Christians there. They are protected by the constitution, though. Then there's Military Intelligence which watches everybody else.
If you check this new movie, Charlie Wilson's War and the book and the History Channel documentary about the actual events behind the movie, all of the Pakistani's are ISI Afghan department. The United States and Saudi Arabia spent something like $6 billion dollars through ISI Afghan desk to fund the war against the Communist Afghan government from 1979 to 1989.
Musharraf is the head of the military and is a dictator. He siezed power in 1999 and manipulated the system to get a nomination for president in next month's democratic elections. By the way, I''ll bet my last dollar this is Al Qaida. They do things in twos. They want Bhutto dead, they want Musharraf dead, and they want the other main candidate Nawaz Sharif dead.

This is a very good move and yes she had to go...I am surprised some in the media are calling her progressive...she has never been one in the first place during her two terms in office.progressive in what? filling her own boots with pakistani money? Yousaf was the Pakistani general who handed out the billions of dollars to the eight Afghan parties.
The Pakistani policy was to give the most money to the most bloodthirsty ones, like Gulbuddin Hekmetyar's Hizib (Islamic Party of Afghanistan) and Mawalawi Khalis' Hizib were two of the most effective against the Afghan Communists and the Soviet forces. Mullah Omar lost an eye and a leg during the jihad against the Communists while serving as a Commander in Hizib Khalis. When the war ended, he went to school in Pakistan but returned home and became outraged at the actions of certain other commanders. He got a bunch of other students (talibs) together and were effective in stopping rapes of little boys in rural areas around Kandahar. They eventually formed a militia which was given money by the Pakistani ISI and grew to eventually run the country.
Hamid Karzai (who is on air now and looks like he's about to cry) was a part of Afghan National Liberation Front. His father was actually the leader. His father sent Hamid to a Muslim university in India but had him "do his part" in the war during summer holidays. The ANLF got a bit of money from the US and Saudis through the ISI but were probably the smallest group during the war. The Taliban killed Karzai's father while he was in exile in Pakistan in 98/99 and Hamid organised a convoy across the border into Taliban territory. All of the old soldiers and millions of Afghans lined the roads to watch the convoy and give respect to the old fighter and politician. The Taliban - believe it or not - showed some respect for the old man by not attacking the funeral convoy. They knew they'd done enough and would lose friends if they attacked his funeral.
I won't hit stateside for several months. What I want to know is if the movie have the jaw dropping part about how the Afghans used to treat Soviet prisoner's. The CIA agent had to fight off DC bureaucrats who wanted Soviets who had been captured to be transferred to US custody, where they could be trained and used as spies against the Soviet Union. After constantly fighting off the pointy heads - led by Karl Rove and Paul Wolfowitz - the CIA guy, Gust Avrokotos stood up in some big meeting and said "these guys are basket cases! They've been getting raped by hundreds of mujahideen left right and center. To Afghans, a man who gets captured in battle isn't a man and that a man who submits to getting fucked up the a$$ is really a woman. These Russian guys are trouble and you'll regret this".

I'm coming down off my soap box before someone breaks out my hero Gen. Colin Powell. Yes, Ghost Wars is also a favorite. I really liked it because it deals with what happened after the Soviets left in 1989 and the Afghan Communists hung on to power for four years. Thanks for the assist.
I decided to read up on Afghanistan when the Taliban destroyed the Buddha statues in early 2001. I knew they were on edge. Then there were the media reports from around April/May 2001 to August 2001 that "Al Qaida were planning something big". I'd definitely recommend The Fragmentation of Afghanistan by Bernard Rubin. It's a political/anthropological look at the country to about 1998. Very little about Al Qaida, though.
