Mistakes and errors in judgment in the workplace

Have you ever made a mistake on the job like put off a task that you thought could be put off and it ended up being something urgent?

Have you ever done anything at work and knew you fucked up and hoped no one would notice?



I just got a request to reboot a customer's server. No biggie. I spent a couple of minutes making sure I logged on to the right server and initiated the reboot. Well to get to this customer's server, I remotely connect to it from one of my companies internal servers. Well how about I rebooted the company server. I don't know how many people were logged on. But after it booted me out I realized it and had to email my manager, his boss, and the server admins. Ran a health check after it came up and thank god it wasn't a monitored server but I could just kick myself!

Anyway, one time my brother made a mistake and shut down a circuit that affected a customer's entire operations. It was a bank and no transactions could be made. Now my error wasn't as bad as that but it could have been had it been an e-commerce server.

I did something like similar earlier this year and know how you feel femme...

I ran a query on a database server that belongs to another department in my company to compare results between our groups. This query worked on my departments server, but crashed the other groups server .. The bad part was that I didn't notify the server admin before i ran it, and didnt find out it crashed until the help desk called when they saw that it was an IP from my group that ran the query. It was down for about 30 min and effected about 200 people...

They couldn't have traced it, because i ran the query from my laptop, but I owned up too it right away which defused the situation. I strongly believe it would have been escalated if i tried to cover it up.

If you were logged into a Windows Server you should probably recommend that your company change the wallpaper to something unique so that you know its your company server. It may prevent that mistake from happening again.

That's a good idea mc2 cuz it was Windows. Sometimes I'll term serv into 3 or 4 boxes at a time. I have to really be careful to be sure I'm on the right server console. I would have never done this on a Unix box.

But I did what you did by notifying everybody ASAP. The server admin said that the box probably was due for a reboot anyway. Whew!

I'm responsible for about 60 boxes all over the world and I have never seen any of them in 6 years.

I have taken down an app and caused about 25000 people to lose access...but hey shit happens.

That's why you are supposed to have redundant systems, and only perform risky work, or reboots during dark windows..(unless you need to fix a critical issue NOW).

It's a card with it's own IP that allows you to control a server as if you were sitting at the terminal. You see everything real time. Virtual power buttons, POST messages, ram counting, BIOS access, everything.

Yeah most of the servers have Ilo access but I generally term serv for windows or ssh to unix boxes.

I know they are implementing bladelogic across the board. I've not worked with that but I hear it's a slick tool.
