How come blacks don't like hockey?

Now, I'm a big hockey fan myself, and I don't understand why blacks don't like hockey. Is it because it's not dominated by blacks, or it's too cold :confused:. I'm just curious...
 
its a couple of pro players like Anson Carter

but for the most part, its been a extremely racist sport.
 
The sport doesn't have enough people for me to identify with to watch.

I used to want to play hockey when I was younger but it's an expensive sport.

800 per season for all positions except goal which cost 1k.
 
i'm about to become a Hockey Fan, i'm from Newark, Prudential Center is up, and fuck it, i enjoy the entertainment of athletic competition....... so i will soon become a Hockey Fan in honor of the new arena

Cuz nobody takes the initiative to take black youth to hockey games. Once you see it in person, you'll get hooked. But if all you know is what you see on tv, you'll pass. It doesn't help that its an expensive sport to particpate in as well. And most black folks are conditioned to like basketball and football.

I got into it once I interned in Ottawa.Everytime I bring it up to a brotha or sista, they look at me confused as hell
 
It costs too much, and there aren't any ice rinks in the hood. It's cheap to play basketball, and football, even baseball is relatively expensive if you're lower income.

okay..hockey is cool, but sweeping the ice...is not...
 
The game is too white. 99% of the players is white. The ice is white and the blackest thing on the court gets slaped around the entire game. :hmm:

Seriously its hard to get into something you never had a chance to do. Just like there's very few baseball fields around in the inner cities so baseball is falling from grace with blacks. Its just hard to relate to something you never take part in.

Setting the Ice Hockey Historical Record Straight

Our knowledge of the roots of Canadian hockey has been based almost solely on the historical records maintained by early White historians.


Because of this, the misconception that hockey is a White man’s invention has persisted. We know today, such an assumption could not be further from historical fact.


The roots of early Canadian hockey originate with the North American Indians. The roots of modern Canadian hockey originate, in large part, from the influence of an even more surprising source, that of early African-Canadian hockey.


For it was Black hockey players in the later half of the nineteenth century whose style of play and innovations helped shape the sport, effectively changing the game of hockey forever. Page 12.
The First Black Ice Hockey Players - 1820 to 1870

With certainty, we can only date Black hockey to the early 1870’s, yet we know that hockey and Black history in
Nova Scotia have parallel roots, going back almost 100 years. Among the first reports of hockey being played occur in 1815 along the isolated Northwest Arm, south of Halifax.


The date is important for the simple fact that as late as October 1815 the region was not home to a large White settlement but was instead the site of a small Black enclave.


Four Black families originally from the Chesapeake Bay area, with a total of fifteen children, had relocated and settled on the Arm. It is reported that these families, Couney, Williams, Munro and Leale, received adequate food, lodging and employment implying that their children were healthy and would have been able to play hockey during the winter months when the Arm was frozen and suitable for skating.


Were these children among the first Canadians to play the game of hockey? We do not know. All we can say is that the coincidence between the date of the Northwest Arm’s Black settlement and the first records of hockey being played in the area are worthy of reflection. Page 12-13.

Co-Sign!!!! My son is 4 and he want to do that shit and it's like 400 to 500 dollars for equipment his size.

Give us some hockey sticks and ice skates and we'll be dominating that sport too, just like we've done in every other sport that your people now suck at
 
Personally, I don't hate it. I think hockey is largely misunderstood because we don't have exposure to it and like baseball, you can't really get into it watching it on TV. That's what i think anyway.

I gave it more respect since I actually went to a college hockey game. There is a lot more shit going on in hockey than where the camera is. It's almost like basketball the way the players continue to position to get hold of the puck.

ok but some people spend 1k and up on wheels for a car but won't pay that price to protect their child in something he could pursue as his "career" perhaps......

not saying you do this, but come on man, i'm sure you dropped that much on jewelry at one point in time, but wont let ya child get into somethin that could mold his future.... let da lil dude enjoy his childhood.....

:hmm::smh:, and for the record, im mixed (white/black), so think before you say something.
 
If there were ice rinks in close proximity to black neighborhoods and the gear was cheaper and easy to get, You best believe the NHL would look a whole lot different.
 
I thought because it was fucking mindless garbage lacking tactical depth?

But then again, so is Basketball, the NFL and Baseball and that gets lots of black athletes.

I feel you, but he dont wanna play it anymore. He into football now. I got his back on whatever he does,but he needs to be committed. And at 4... why you making a brother feel guilty??

Hockey is a regional sport, and if you didn't grown up on a frozen lake, chances are that you give less than a fuck about it. Witness the NHL's failed attempt to expand hockey into the south and west. What was once one of the big four televised sports, in the Northeast at least, now relegated to a virtually unknown cable station.

Even in the Northeast, hockey wasn't pushed in inner city schools. Where I grew up, Metro Detroit, ever white suburb school had a hockey team, and there were extracurricular hockey leagues on top of that. In contrast, I'm not aware of even one school in Detroit proper with a hockey team. Martin Luther King High School, in Detroit, is directly across the fucking street from an indoor hockey rink. It is utilized by suburban white schools and white suburban hockey leagues, but King H.S. has no access to it.
