7͏h͏ ·Ghana's Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has formally asked Russia to stop what he called the “illegal recruitment” of Ghanaian citizens for the war in Ukraine. According to Ablakwa, 62 Ghanaians have lost their lives and another 15 remain missing.
The appeal came after talks in Moscow with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Lavrov claimed the men signed contracts out of “solidarity” with a country that once helped them fight racism, plus financial incentives.
The figures and the formal request were confirmed by Ghana’s foreign minister and reported by Russian media, as covered by the Kyiv Independent.
Zelensky earlier revealed that about 3,000 African mercenaries are fighting for Russia.
