Kennedy Center Updates Its Logo to 'The Trump Kennedy Center' as JFK's Family Speaks Out Against Change

The iconic institution, which was dedicated in 1964 as a living memorial for JFK, has been retitled "The Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts"

The Kennedy Center is already beginning to embrace its newly voted upon name: The Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.

On Thursday, Dec. 18, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed that the Trump-appointed Kennedy Center board had voted to rename the longstanding JFK memorial in Washington, D.C., after the sitting Republican president.

Within hours, the Kennedy Center had updated its website header and social media icons to display a new version of its logo that reads "The Trump Kennedy Center."

The Kennedy Center was dedicated by Congress as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy one year after his assassination. The former president, a devoted supporter of the arts, frequently advocated for what he called "our contribution to the human spirit," as highlighted on the center's site.

Shortly after assuming office in January, President Donald Trump seized control of the Kennedy Center, appointing loyalists to the board, which then voted him as chairman. He has casually referred to the building as the "Trump-Kennedy Center" in speeches and social media posts since the summer.

After the new name was voted on, surviving members of the Kennedy family immediately began reacting with disdain online.

Maria Shriver, JFK's niece, slammed the change as "downright weird," taking issue that a presidential memorial for her murdered uncle now displays a sitting president's name first.

"The Kennedy Center was named after my uncle, President John F Kennedy. It was named in his honor," she began a lengthy Instagrampost. "He was a man who was interested in the arts, interested in culture, interested in education, language, history. He brought the arts into the White House, and he and my Aunt Jackie amplified the arts, celebrated the arts, stood up for the arts and artists."

She continued: "It is beyond comprehension that this sitting president has sought to rename this great memorial dedicated to President Kennedy. It is beyond wild that he would think adding his name in front of President Kennedy’s name is acceptable. It is not."

"Next thing perhaps he will want to rename JFK Airport, rename the Lincoln Memorial, the Trump Lincoln Memorial. The Trump Jefferson Memorial. The Trump Smithsonian. The list goes on," Shriver, 70, added, before concluding, "Can we not see what is happening here? C’mon, my fellow Americans! Wake up! This is not dignified. This is not funny. This is way beneath the stature of the job. It’s downright weird. It’s obsessive in a weird way. Just when you think somone can’t stoop any lower, down they go…"

Jack Schlossberg, the only grandson of JFK, highlighted the reports that the vote to rename the institution was not unanimous, as Leavitt suggested when announcing the news.

"Microphones were muted and the board meeting and vote NOT unanimous," he wrote on X, before suggesting that his congressional campaign may have had something to do with the effort to suppress the Kennedy name. "I’m told Trump explicitly motivated to act by JACK FOR NEW YORK. Our campaign represents everything Trump can’t stand or defeat."

His comments seemingly referenced claims by Ohio Rep. Joyce Beatty, an ex-officio Kennedy Center board member, who alleged that when she tried to oppose the name change during the board meeting on Dec. 18, her microphone was muted.

"SEND ME TO CONGRESS TO SMOKE THESE FOOLS — MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD LOUD AND CLEAR," Schlossberg, 32, wrote in a separate Instagram post about the news. "I won’t back down or be drowned out."

Joe Kennedy III, the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy, also commented on the news, insisting that regardless of the Kennedy Center board's vote, the memorial cannot legally be renamed.

"The Kennedy Center is a living memorial to a fallen president and named for President Kennedy by federal law," wrote Joe, 45. "It can no sooner be renamed than can someone rename the Lincoln Memorial, no matter what anyone says."

The Kennedy family is speaking out after the announcement that Washington D.C.’s historic Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts will be renamed the Trump-Kennedy Center. The decision came from the center’s board of trustees, which includes several new members appointed earlier this year by President Donald Trump. According to a statement, the board voted unanimously to rename the venue in honor of both President John F. Kennedy and President Trump.

The name change has stirred backlash, particularly from members of the Kennedy family. Former Representative Joe Kennedy III (D-Mass.), the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy, questioned whether the name change was legal. He posted on social media that the Kennedy Center was established by an act of Congress as a memorial to President Kennedy and compared the change to trying to rename the Lincoln Memorial.

Kerry Kennedy, daughter of Robert F. Kennedy and head of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Center, also expressed strong disagreement. In a message shared online, she accused the Trump administration of targeting freedom of speech, including artists and journalists. She claimed that President Kennedy and President Trump represent very different values and said Trump’s name should not appear next to her father’s.

Maria Shriver, daughter of President Kennedy’s sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver, also reacted emotionally. She said she was left “speechless” and in “disbelief.” Shriver had previously clashed with Trump on social media, particularly after his remarks about the death of filmmaker Rob Reiner.

The renaming was announced by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. She said the change was a recognition of the Trump administration’s work to restore and financially stabilize the building. According to Roma Daravi, vice president of public relations for the Kennedy Center, the vote was unanimous and reflects a bipartisan acknowledgment of Trump’s efforts.

Trump himself said he was “surprised and honored” by the decision. He praised the board, calling them “the most distinguished people in the country,” and pointed to the fact that the center had been struggling both financially and structurally before his administration stepped in. He added that the center is now strong and well-supported thanks to those efforts.

While the board reportedly voted unanimously, some are now challenging that claim. Jack Schlossberg, President Kennedy’s grandson, stated online that microphones were muted during the meeting and that not all members were able to vote or speak. Schlossberg suggested that the move may have had political motivations, noting that Trump is campaigning for Republican candidates in several high-profile races.

Under federal law, the Kennedy Center was created as a living memorial to President Kennedy. It was signed into law in 1958 and renamed in 1964 after Kennedy’s assassination. Some legal experts say it’s unclear whether the board has the authority to formally change the name without a new act of Congress.

At least one sitting member of Congress, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), said the renaming may be illegal and should be challenged. The Department of the Interior, which oversees the National Park Service and related federal landmarks, has not yet commented on whether the change will require further approval.

The move has also affected the arts community, which uses the Kennedy Center for performances, education, and outreach. Some artists have spoken out, while others are waiting to see whether the name change becomes permanent or if legal challenges will follow.

Despite the backlash, Trump supporters have praised the decision, saying the former president deserves credit for investing in and preserving one of the nation’s most iconic cultural institutions. The White House has not indicated whether there will be a formal ceremony to mark the renaming.

At this point, the building will be known as the Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts, though many expect continued debate over the change in the months ahead.

Rep. Joyce Beatty, who opposed Trump’s Kennedy Center rename, says she was muted during board vote

Fri, December 19, 2025 at 10:19 AM CST
Rep. Joyce Beatty is speaking out after White House claims the vote to rename the John F. Kennedy Center after President Trump was unanimous.

Rep. Joyce Beatty is pushing back hard on claims that the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. was “unanimously” renamed after President Donald Trump.

On Thursday, Dec. 18, after White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that the famed arts institution had been renamed following a “unanimous” vote by the Trump-leaning board installed shortly after the president took office, the 75-year-old Ohio congresswoman said that characterization simply isn’t true.

“I’m sitting here in my congressional office in Washington, D.C., just ending a call with the Kennedy Center, where I serve as an ex officio member,” Beatty said in a video posted to X. “I am bringing this to you live today because what you may hear is that there was a unanimous vote to rename the Kennedy Center, the Trump Center.”

“Be clear: I was on that call,” she continued. “As I tried to push my button to voice my concern, to ask questions, and certainly not to vote in support of this, I was muted. Each time I tried to speak, I was muted. Participants who were online were not allowed to voice their concerns, yet it was said at the end that it was a unanimous vote.”

Beatty also underscored that the decision exceeds the board’s authority. “Clearly Congress has a say in this,” she said. “The Kennedy Center was created by Congress. This is just another attempt to evade the law and not let the people have a say.”

In the caption accompanying her post, she added bluntly: “For the record, this was not on the agenda. This was not consensus. This is censorship.”

The controversy follows Trump’s aggressive reshaping of the Kennedy Center soon after taking office, when he purged appointed board members and replaced them with loyalists. The reconstituted board later named Trump chairman of the storied arts organization, which was dedicated in 1964 as a “living memorial” to President John F. Kennedy.

“I want to make sure it runs properly,” Trump said at the time. “We don’t need woke at the Kennedy Center… some of the shows were terrible. They were a disgrace.”

Since then, the takeover has sparked sustained backlash, with several artists, including Issa Rae, Rhiannon Giddens, and the producers of “Hamilton,” canceling high-profile programming. Trump also broke with tradition by becoming the first sitting president to host the Kennedy Center Honors, a move that drew mixed reactions. He previously hinted at a potential name change while teasing this year’s nominees, writing online, “GREAT Nominees for the TRUMP/KENNEDY CENTER, whoops, I mean, KENNEDY CENTER, AWARDS.”

The latest announcement has ignited fresh outrage, including from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who questioned what the move says about the administration’s priorities.

“Are you kidding me?”Jeffries said during a press conference on Thursday, in a clip circulating. “How does that help deal with the affordability crisis in this country?”

“These people are pathetic. They are sycophants,” he added. “They’re bending the knee to a loser.”

Jeffries also emphasized a key legal reality: the renaming effort lacks teeth. “They don’t have the power to do it,” he stressed. “Only Congress can rename the Kennedy Center.”

“The wannabe king and his sycophantic minions can’t do it,” Jeffries said, “but they’re going to create a spectacle. And none of this helps the American people who already believe Donald Trump is not focused on making their lives better.”

I think he needs to have his name on the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial too because at this stage, I just don’t give a fuck anymore.

You can't just change the name of an important historical monument on a whim

Signage, merch, transportation and vastly other areas need to be changed to reflect such a change. I mean millions of dollars in man hours, supplies and such ..... and for what, as a vanity project for a narcissist?!

Congress should be ashamed of themselves

What the hell has happened to this country? You have a genuine war hero, losing top billing to a draft dodger!

The PT-109 Incident (August 1943)While patrolling the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, JFK’s boat was rammed and split in half by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri. The collision killed two crew members instantly and left the remaining 11 stranded in the ocean amidst burning fuel.
  • The Rescue Swim: Despite a re-aggravated back injury and having swallowed toxic fuel, Kennedy spent hours gathering his men. He personally towed a badly burned crewman, Patrick McMahon, to a small island by clenching the strap of McMahon's life jacket in his teeth while swimming.
  • Survival on the Islands: For several days, the crew survived on various tiny islands with little food or water. Kennedy repeatedly swam into dangerous, shark-infested waters at night, hoping to signal passing American boats.
  • The Coconut Message: Kennedy eventually encountered two Solomon Islander scouts, Biuku Gasa and Eroni Kumana. He carved a distress message into a coconut shell:“NAURO ISL… COMMANDER… NATIVE KNOWS POS'IT… HE CAN PILOT… 11 ALIVE… NEED SMALL BOAT… KENNEDY”The scouts paddled 35 miles to deliver the message, leading to the crew's rescue. Kennedy later used that coconut as a paperweight in the Oval Office.

    Military Decorations
For his "extremely heroic conduct" and leadership, Kennedy received several high-level honors:
    • Navy and Marine Corps Medal: The highest non-combat decoration for heroism at the time.
    • Purple Heart: Awarded for the injuries he sustained during the collision.
    • Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal: With three service stars for his participation in various engagements.
  • Historical Perspective

Kennedy's reputation as a war hero was a significant factor in his political rise. While some critics later questioned the tactical decisions that led to the collision, the consensus among historians and his own crew remains that his actions after the crash saved 10 lives that almost certainly would have been lost otherwise.

Seem like Congress did not have anything to do the renaming

One of the board members said they did the voting without her because they knew she’d go against it…

Many individuals pressing Congress to do something.
Honestly yea it’s fucked up but there’s other issues.

But they did it… now what?

But they did it… now what?

Let me elaborate......

To do something like this the right way

You make the announcement that the name would be changed, give a date about 3-6 weeks in advance and then have all necessary pamphlets/signage...etc updated to reflect the change.

He made the "change" just so that his name was first when the "Kennedy Honors" was held.

This will cost $$$ Millions!

Have you seen D.C.?! There's signage everywhere and most monuments make references to the nearby others......

If this dude is half the narcissist I think he is, they are either placing a sticker over the existing pamphlets/ maps or dumping them completely and waiting for the new ones......
