HEALTH UPDATES: Dedicated Food Recall thread ONGOING...

@playahaitian

I believe we should create a dedicated thread for food recalls to ensure that we can identify all the related items that have been recalled.

I mean WTF! I’m reading an article that has all those recalls on the same page.

Wait which peroxide? I use peroxide multiple times a day as a mouthwash

If you've noticed ear, nose, or throat symptoms this summer, July 10 data from the CDC confirms that cases of pertussis (cough) are "circulating," while "rhinovirus" (linked with common colds) and "parainfluenza"—put simply, respiratory viruses—are "elevated nationally."

One treatment for related symptoms is under recall, as this week the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the June 25 withdrawal of 11 peroxide products due to what appears to be low levels of the active ingredient.

A July 14 FDA report reveals that an apparent 244,432 containers of 6.5% carbamide peroxide have been pulled from market for "SubPotent Drug: low pH and significantly reduced assay (~0.6% vs expected ~6 7%)." This seems to suggest that only around 10% of the active ingredient indicated on the bottle is present in the product, which may yield ineffective results.

The Cleveland Clinic explains that carbamide peroxide at 6.5% is typically used to soften and loosen earwax, making it easier to remove.

Recalled unit sizes were in 0.5-ounces, as well as in reported "bottle" packaging.

The FDA says distribution was nationwide. The following brands were affected:

  • CVS Health — Lots: 1505121, 1504242 (exp 2027-03); 1505132, 1505182, 1505191, 1505291, 1505331 (exp 2027-04); 1504231, 1504311 (exp 2027-03); 1505312, 1505321 (exp 2027-04)
  • Clinere — Lots: 1504241 (exp 2027-03); 1504291, 1504301 (exp 2027-03)
  • QC Quality Choice — Lots: 1505121, 1505342 (exp 2027-04); 1505381 (exp 2027-04)
  • TopCare Health — Lots: 1505122, 1505343 (exp 2027-04); 1505142, 1505341 (exp 2027-04)
  • Audiologist's Choice — Lots: 1505123 (exp 2027-04); 1505131 (exp 2027-04)
  • Family Wellness — Lots: 1505124, 1505311, 1505332 (exp 2027-04)
  • Good Neighbor Pharmacy — Lots: 1505334 (exp 2027-04); 1505143, 1505151 (exp 2027-04)
  • Leader — Lots: 1505333 (exp 2027-04); 1505144, 1505302 (exp 2027-04)
  • Foster & Thrive — Lots: 1505161, 1505181, 1505301, 1505382 (exp 2027-04)
  • Meijer — Lot: 1505344 (exp 2027-04)
  • CAREone — Lot: 1505141 (exp 2027-04)
The FDA is calling this a Class II recall, suggesting "a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."

More Than 54,000 Pounds Of Jasmine Rice Have Been Recalled—What To Know

Rice

Jasmine

In April, Wegmans announced it was removing recalled jasmine white rice made by Lundberg Family Farms from its shelves. The recalled rice was sold not only at Wegmans but also at other national retailers like Target and Walmart. This week, the FDA announced an update, upping the number of recalled packages and providing additional details.

What Products Are Being Recalled?

As of this week, 54,648 pounds of Lundberg Family Farms jasmine white rice have been recalled. The company is owned by Wehah Farms, based in California.

The affected rice was sold in 32-ounce packages and was distributed in California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin. A total of 27,324 packages are affected.

The packages contain the UPC code 073416040281 and have best-before dates of February 1 and 2, 2027. Additionally, they contain the lot numbers 260201MA and 260202MA.

Why Are They Being Recalled?

As Delish reported back in April, the affected rice products were recalled due to the possible presence of foreign material. However, specifics on what that material is have still not been provided (although common offenders include stones, wood, metal, and plastic).

The FDA has determined that this is a Class II recall, meaning that those who consume the affected product may suffer temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences. Serious health consequences are rare.

What Should I Do If I Have The Affected Product?

Customers who have the affected products in their homes should not consume them and instead throw them away. Wegmans previously announced that affected products purchased in its stores could be returned for a full refund. Those who purchased the affected product elsewhere can contact their local store to see if refunds are available.
