MOVIES ~ Any of ya'll seen any good (or shitty) movies in recent weeks/months? Post reviews, feedback, movie news, trailers, recommendations, etc ...

They are re-releasing Kill Bill the Whole bloody affair this weekend. I'm in the theater watching it now. There is an intermission but they don't say how long the intermission is

Screenshot-20251205-183733-Google.jpg

I loved it. The same movie except for an extended clip of the Oren Iishi upbringing to adulthood, it was the same movie, and I love the movie

Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair

It's Kill BIll 1 and 2 :dunno: If you haven't seen it in a minute like me, it was a great watch.

They made it unrated, so it's a lot of missing body parts and cartoon blood when it comes to the sword play.

One issue is that, it probably could have been cut down about a good 20 minutes. It had some pacing issues. The foot shots and some of the scenes could have been condensed. Especially part two, because it's less action. It also has a 15 minute intermission, which is cool.

It's an end credits scene that's about 5 to 10 minutes long that's entertaining, but I'm not sure you need to wait 15 minutes for the credit to watch it. You can catch it online. It's some added to the animation for Pretty Rikki and it's in color for the Crazy 88's.

Finally got to see it. Thanks for the reviews they helped make sure I got my ass out and to it lol

I saw this - Vol 1 in particular - so many times in the first few years of its release… I started out bored tbh.
More than any other time I’ve seen it, this time, I REALLY wanted there to be more of the little things from Vivica (her shit talk while fighting is classic to me lol). That never gets old. And just wish in general there was more of her in the movie.

Eventually I got drawn back in - especially when the animation hit and I remembered — OH SHIT that’s right! There’s shit I’ve never seen! Lol

House of Blue Leaves restored is FUCKIN beautiful.

**LOTS OF little SPOILERS below lol**

But even so, until the last scene b4 intermission with Bill and Sophie, I was def still in and out of feeling locked in.

I’m so glad I stayed bec I wasn’t expecting it to build as well as it did into second half. It was a joy spiritually to see “Bill” and “Budd” (“resurrected” so to speak - RIP) and that I think carried through for me to the end having its intended emotional significance.

I was uncertain how the BB reveal would play w/o the spoiler — it is actually written into the script that Bill asks Sophie if The Bride knows during their last hospital room scene. So the original idea/intention WAS to have the audience know BB is alive b4 The Bride finds out.

In reading it, for me - that made the uncertainty of the burial stakes a lot higher in “The lonely grave of Paula…” chapter. But it definitely worked well that this version omitted that. A lot better than expected like I said for us to first discover BB instead WITH Kiddo when she walks in expecting Bill.

Didn’t like the new animation (added Oren at 13yrs Riki section) almost AT ALL (which was obviously not how I expected to feel about it lol). But everything added BACK that was originally shot and or included in the Cannes cut back in 2003 - live action and animation extended shit… fantastic. Really crazy how subtle extra moments here and there just a few frames can really change or amplify impact.

Brightburn on Netflix

This is basically the plot from Superman except the baby they find on a spaceship is evil. The little kid discovers his powers at age 12, but instead of using his powers for good he uses them for evil. Some of his kills arr really, really, gory. But otherwise you can tell they didnt put a lot of money in this movie (part two has already been approved, maybe it will have a bigger budget). The acting was just o.k.

I'd rate this movie a 7.5 out of 10. It has potential to be a decent franchise. I will watch part two when it comes out.

YouTube has won the rights to stream the Oscars, after decades of it being broadcast on network TV.

The ceremony will be available live and for free on the platform beginning in 2029, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Wednesday.

The move marks end ABC's 50-year run as the Academy Awards' exclusive broadcaster.

The deal also symbolizes streaming's growing influence within the film industry.

'We are thrilled to enter into a multifaceted global partnership with YouTube to be the future home of the Oscars and our year-round Academy programming,' a statement from Academy Awards CEO Bill Kramer and President Lynette Howell Taylor read.

The two said that the new partnership 'will allow us to expand access to the work of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience possible.'

Ruthless Atonement

Another surprisingly, nearly competent production on TUBI. Entertaining story of revenge and cutthroat backstabbers. Its a bit of Kill Bill and The Count of Monte Cristo. The fight scenes needed better choreography, the acting stalls in a few scenes and some parts got unintentional laughs from me.

The Mastermind

PRAISE: In my opinion perfect crimes or heists are a thing of the past. Sure people still get away with bank robberies but that's because most bank robberies aren't done by serial bank robbers anymore its just someone trying to catch up with their bills for a couple of months. Even with the recent heist at The Louvre all four of the thieves were captured. There are cameras everywhere and they can tell a thief we have you from five different angles stuffing items down your pants and shirt. This movie takes place in the 1970s in which security was lacking and then some and this is just right for James Blaine Mooney (Josh O’Connor)and his crew to pull an art heist. Easier said than done because all kinds of obstacles are put on his path. I was amused by most of the movie and it was entertaining to watch most of it play out. Mooney is the kind of guy who could easily do something else to support his family but he would rather lie, borrow and steal. The ripple effect it has plays out in dramatic ways but I didn't really feel sorry for the character i just found myself shaking my head at hole he digs for himself and his family.
There's the backdrop of Vietnam and it displays how in war time some are deeply effected and some are not ,just trying to make it to point A and B.

PROBLEMS: The movie definitely meanders here and there and my hopes for more excitement slowly but surely faded as scenes added up to drawn out unnecessary filler.

Scale of 1 to 10 a 7

Hunting Season

Mel Gibson stars as a reclusive survivalist along with his daughter its a nice quiet life until some psychopaths show up. The characters in the film are interesting enough to make this a full watch. The violence is intense in some scenes and the build up is good but the climax was far to lackluster. It was so odd to watch the pull back from the itense violence. Its as if it was edited to try and get a PG -13 rating .Plus i had a few questions about a character but the answers are only slightly provided.

Thank you for this honest review.
I've tried to watch this version of the movie twice and fell asleep both times. It's not that its bad or anything, I've just seen it a bunch of times already and there isn't allow new stuff in the beginning to keep my attention.

Like you mentioned, I would have loved if the fight with Vivica A Fox could be been extended.

I loved this movie. After that newest Superman dropped, I went back and rewatched that and Chronicle. Couldn't even tell you why those two movies in particular popped up for me.

I thought about dropping this opinion in the unpopular movie thread downstairs, but there isn't much traction down there for discussion. But Bightburn is my favorite Superman movie and it's honestly not even close.

Then again I also think that watching Life (2017) & Upgrade (2018) back-2-back makes for a way better Venom movie experience than anything that Sony did with either Toby or Tom Hardy. So :dunno: take these opinions with a grain of salt :giggle:

The French Connection
1971

8/10

I watched this one last night on the road on MAX.

The last time I watched it was back in the 1980s on network TV.

It’s a classic crime drama that surprisingly won 5 Academy Awards.

It’s a somewhat slow burn film that deals mainly with the investigation work of the main character Popeye Doyle played by Gene Hackman. It’s slow, but has enough to keep your eyes glued to the screen.

It has two good classic suspense scenes with Popeye following the main criminal and another involving a car chasing a NYC elevated subway train for another criminal.

The film was filmed on location in NYC. One of the interesting backdrops is getting a few views of the World Trade Center under construction and seeing the cranes on top of the towers.

Another thing of the film is seeing a lot of items and things that is no longer available today. For instance seeing a small lounge area in the rear of a Boeing 707 and a Norelco tape recorder (they only make cordless razors today). See if you can spot other non-defunct items thru out the film.

The film has a recognizable Black actor from his younger years. See if you can spot him in the Black bar scene.

There is a sequel involving the main bad guy of the film returning. It’s on MAX and I plan on watching it soon.

French Connection II
1975

6.5/10

I watched and reviewed the first film earlier this year in this thread. I watched it last night at home on Prime.

This sequel takes place four years after the first film with Popeye Doyle still on the hunt for the Heroin trafficker Charnier.

The beginning of the film immediately starts with Popeye in France and meeting his French counterparts in the Marseille Police Department. There is tension and language differences between them which is the main premise for the first 1/3 of the film.

The 2/3 of the film is the highlight of the film with Popeye being captured by Charnier and turned into a heroin addict. This part of the film gives a sanitized version of addiction and withdrawal from the heroin. Hackman does a decent job during this part of the film depicting what heroin will do a person.

That last part of the film has Doyle catching up to Charnier and repeats a pursuit thru Marseille similar to the first film. The chase is not as suspenseful as in the first film, but does give a decent presentation of whether Charnier will get away or not. I will not spoil it for those who have not seen it, but the chase ends in the final second of the film.

Overall, it’s a decent film, not as suspenseful as the first, but it does a good job of closing out the main plots of both films.

Synopsis

This sequel to William Friedkin's 1971 crime drama finds Detective "Popeye" Doyle (Gene Hackman) still hot on the trail of slippery drug trafficker Charnier (Fernando Rey), but this time in Marseilles, France. Uprooted from his familiar New York City beat, Doyle struggles to assert himself in a strange city and break the drug ring wide open. When Charnier's goons force him into a heroin addiction, the tough cop must summon every ounce of his courage to kick the habit cold turkey.

If you haven't seen these in 3D. IMAX...you won't see what the big deal. It's not for some streaming cam version on your home entertainment center. We know the stories are basic, you're there for the spectacle. The visuals. The Navi world.

It's long, over three hours, but I was fine with it. There was enough action to keep me engaged. Though for a change I wasn't the one snoozing. This girl a couple of seats down from me was getting a good nap. Snoring and everything.

I liked the added villain. That's probably why I enjoyed it as much as I did. Spider didn't annoy me as much as he did in the second one and I guess I'm used to the locs :smh:

How they treated the Tukun whale creatures was hard to watch. You can tell what James Cameron feels about the planet, because it's really heavy handed. I wonder how others feel and if they get it or tune it out.

I will add, the acting seemed off at times. In one scene near the beginning, it seemed really really bad. Like Power level bad.

They story was somewhat repetitive from the second, but I enjoyed it and I'm ready for the next one. :dunno:

The Electric State
2025

4/10

I watched this the other night while at home on Netflix. It came out earlier this year and I finally got around to watching to clear out my cache on Netflix before years end.

Not much to say about it. It’s basically a film about how humans have become heavily reliant on automation/AI which led to a Great War. The outcome was humans overcame the robots/AI by connecting themselves into robots which caused a banishment of robots to concentration camps.

And that’s about it.

Millie Bobby Brown is the main character and her story is nothing new with the plot which has been done countless times.

It’s an interesting film, it’s basically a ‘Watch Once, No Interest In Ever Watching It Again’.

Synopsis

In a futuristic world, Michelle and her robot companion embark on a perilous adventure, joining forces with a smuggler to navigate a crumbling society in search of her missing brother.

Eddington
2025

5.5/10

I watched this film the other night at home on HBO MAX.

It’s a dark, comedy/satire that takes place during May 2020 in a small rural town in New Mexico.

If you remember all the craziness that happened that year, this film will definitely bring back memories.

The main subplot is the Covid pandemic. The film deals with the mandates, mask wearing, social distancing and a lot of the conspiracies that came up early in the pandemic.

A 2nd subplot deals with AI data centers being built in small, rural areas in America.

The 3rd subplot revolves around the George Floyd/BLM protests as they slowly expanded nationwide/internationally.

A number of the characters are basically metaphors of people who were high profile during the events of 2020. ‘Russell Brand’ is one of the most obvious. The comedy in this film is not HaHa funny, but will get you too chuckle when you start remembering the events of 2020.

The two main characters are introduced early with their character development which goes along with the subplots I mentioned above. They have a history between them prior to the film and the issues that are going on just amplifiers their indifferences.

There have been a number of films to come out with the Covid pandemic as a the backdrop, this is the first I have seen that focuses on the craziness of it. Other films I have read about, they usually focus on sentimental issues dealing with deaths or something related.

There is limited interaction between Phoenix/Pascal’s characters unlike what the trailer shows. The film mainly revolves around Phoenix’s character.

It’s a 2.5hr film, about 40 minutes could have been chopped off, but it does play out well and keeps your eyes glued to the screen.

Synopsis

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a standoff between a small-town sheriff and mayor sparks a powder keg as neighbour is pitted against neighbour in Eddington, N.M.

Avatar: Fire and Ash

PRAISE: I know immersive, thrilling adventure is guaranteed with Writer and Director James Cameron at the helm. In this third chapter of the Avatar series of movies the Sully family is dealing with grief in their own ways....individually over the death of son ,brother and friend Neteyam. I immediately felt the raw emotion of the characters. The motion capture is still perfect. Capturing all the expressions of wonder, pain and heartache. The various characters and actors have wonderful stand out moments. Especially between
Sam Worthington as Jake and Zoe Saldana as Neytiri. Then theres Stephen Lang as Quaritch and
Oona Chaplin as Varang. Varang is the leader of a cult-like group of Na’vi warriors known as the Mangkwan. She is a blend of Hera ,Proximus Caesar and King Edward I. The dynamic and bond between Varang and Quaritch is uneasy, edgy and seductive and i enjoyed every minute of their time together on screen.Chaplin is outstanding as Varang. Capturing the spirit of a character that feels she's owed more than what life has given her and will get it by any means necessary. Theres always been this uneasy bond of encouragement and hate between Jake Sully and Quaritch and i liked how it was handled in the movie. Cameron doesn't hold back on the wonder, new discoveries that are laced with spirituality and connection to higher powers. He along with writers Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa display how grief and a lust for revenge can turn the warmest heart cold. The SFX are great and battle scenes are well done making me feel like I was in the middle of them. Along with all of the action are strong messages about racism and what real family is and sacrifice. With so much going on in the movie with various characters and their goals which for some are sinister and some noble the three hour plus run time is necessary and justified.

PROBLEMS: Into the third hour the movie enters been there and done that mode almost to the letter. That was disappointing because theres so much more that could have taken the place of something repetitive.

Scale of 1 to 10 an 8½

Finally saw this weekend,
I'd give 5/10

I liked the first and part of the second half.
I'd watch those parts again,
Didn't like the third act much at all.

Naomie Ackie got second billing to Robert Pattinson,
Even though I don't know much about her, she did well.
This movie continues the new troupe of the leading white male actor,
with the Black girlfriend and or wife.
I don't think there was a single Black male in the entire movie.
