I believe the gay theme in the first season turned many people away from that character. I watched season two and three and I found them quite enjoyable, and I’m eagerly anticipating the fourth and final season.

Oh, I just read that as you saying it as a negative.
Without having seen seasons 2 & 3, just based on your description, I can see what you’re saying.
People complaining about gay characters strikes me as unnecessary bitching, just like white people complaining about a black ghostbuster or whatever. The original Fresh Prince came out, no pun intended, in the early 90s and had zero LGBT presence. The show is based in CALIFORNIA, that is just not realistic in the 2020s!!!
Haters gonna hate but that’s a problem for the haters, not a problem with the show. If Gilligan’s Island was reimagined today, they better not just have 7 straight white characters. That was seen as okay in the 60s or 70s but it isn’t now and the same goes for Fresh Prince and the 90s vs now.
I see Noma has risen from the dead to continue her criminal dealings lol. Side note: the actress who plays her is married to the guy who plays Uncle Phil.

This show seems rushed since it's the final season.
Never watched it. I might try to pick up in when tv dies down some. I was honestly worried they were gonna mess this up and then heard there was some beef between the actors in the original YouTube short and the creator. Sounds like they did a solid job in the end.
I love how they re-created certain small moments from the original:
Carlton doing the Carlton dance at a party
Will and Carlton doing the Apache dance
Aunt Viv making the TikTok with Hillary and Ashley and doing the Aunt Viv dance
Viv and Regina doing the scene that Will and Tyra did. SN: Tyra still looks great.
Let's also not ignore all the eye candy. There were some beautiful woman on this show.

Now, this I find very interesting.
I don't believe there's any tension between Will and Alfonso.
But I'm not sure he's made peace with Janet Hubert, when Will brought her out to meet Daphne Maxwell-Reid on the Reunion special, Alfonso left the set (quietly)
They did give a nod to Alfonso by naming the rebooted Carlton "Carlton Alfonso Banks"
