This series debuted In earlier October and I watched it this week on Netflix at home and finished this afternoon.
It’s the 3rd installment of Netflix’s popular “Monster” anthology series with the first two about Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez Brothers. I hadn’t seen the first two and had no interest in watching the first two, but when I saw the trailer for this series, it caught my attention with its references with cult classic horror films.
It’s based after serial killer Ed Gein. He was the inspiration for Hitchcock’s “Psycho” and later the cult classic “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” along with “The Silence of the Lambs”.
The series immediately kicks off depicting how sexually Fucked up Ed Gein is. It soon goes into the origin and what things drove him to cross the line. He was an undiagnosed schizophrenic whose condition was influenced by a combination of his bat shit crazy, religious mother and when he got access to sexually theme Nazi pulp comics based around real life Nazi war criminal, Ilse Koch. He was also influenced by unreleased Nazi Death Camp photos.
It’s a somewhat slow burn series with each episode, but what saves it is that each episode has extended parts that play out like a horror film. Those horror parts are nothing spectacular if you are a hardcore horror fan, but it’s interesting too watch with how the series plays out.
The series does time jumps from the 1940s thru the 1970s. These time jumps are in relation to Hitchcock doing “Psycho”, which changed/influenced Hollywood horror and later filming of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”.
For the Pervs, there are number of scenes that will get you worked up involving women’s underwear, female underwear sniffing, GILF sex and sick perverted shit that you might enjoy.
For the Gay Agenda trackers, Ed Geins (Charlie Dutton) is shown in women’s underwear/clothing and performs masturbation. Actor “Anthony Perkins” is shown during the filming of Psycho and is shown in Gay relationships including sex with a BM. A female Trans actress is shown and in full post-op, frontal nudity. There is hardcore graphic sex scene between a WM/BM.
One of the interesting things in the series is how Ed was able to find women who were ok with his perverse behavior and level of violence. Not much with graphic violence, but what is shown is done to make a point.
And what should not be unexpected, Ed is deemed to crazy to be brought in court and his “White Privilege” kicks into overdrive.
I looked into the series and it got some thumbs down on historical accuracy. I’m not sure what is inaccurate, but I suspect what is shown with Ed Gein, some things may have been added/exaggerated so that they got 8 episodes and too sensationalize the story. And with Hitchcock, Anthony Perkins and others, I’m not sure if all that was accurate in what was shown with how their films were produced. I haven’t done any research of my own.
Charlie Dutton does a decent performance depicting how much of a socialpath Ed Gein was. It’s a performance completely different from what you maybe used too. It has a all-star supporting cast in minor roles throughout the series.
The ending is somewhat controversial in my opinion, it was shown from Ed’s POV, but the season ended making it seem like he did something for mankind. He was an influence for some classic horror flicks and he suffered from severe mental illness, but the lunatic was a serial killer and it shouldn’t have had an inspiring ending the way it was depicted.
Overall, this season of the anthology series is not for everyone, it’s full of disturbing and odd imagery and graphic LGBT+ imagery that will offend and make some people uncomfortable, if that content offends you, I highly recommend not watching this season, but it is interesting watching the procession of severe mental illness play out. If you are a fan of the “Terrifier” films, you will definitely enjoy this part of the series with its horror themed.
The 4th season is supposed to be about Lizzie Borden.

Keith David was great in Duster. Damn shame that show wasn't renewed. It was a pleasant surprise earlier this year, and if I remember correctly from an interview with the showrunners ... they had a plan to go a handful of seasons with the story arcs. Kind of show you hope another network or streamer would pick up the rights to.
