The Monkey Hustle
1976

3/10

This is the 3rd film that Rudy Ray Moore was in. I reviewed his first two films earlier in the thread. I watched this one last night on the road on tubi.

The main thing about this film is that Rudy is barely in the film. This movie, unlike Rudy’s first 2 films was put out by a major studio. Rudy has a small speaking part.

The film revolves around the main character played by Yaphet Kotto.

While watching it, the film is all over the place in presentation and delivering the story. It focuses a lot on sub-plots with minor characters.

The movie is full of familiar Black actors who are at the start of their careers. You will be familiar with them seeing them in later TV series in the 70s/80s and films. It took me a minute to recognize a famous Black actress that made her career in a popular day time soap opera in the late 70s/80s.

There are some street fight scenes that are probably the realest street fight scenes I have seen in media. The actors actually look like they going at it. The fights don’t look fake.

Overall, it’s an interesting film. It was filmed on location in Chicago and has outside scenes that you don’t normally see in media, that are shot in Chicago. Fashion amongst the actors is interesting, especially with some of the male actors….I’ll leave it at that…

Synopsis

Slick Chicago street hustler Big Daddy Foxx (Yaphet Kotto) lives comfortably off petty confidence scams that he pulls with the help of loyal teenage acolytes Baby 'D (Kirk Calloway), Tiny (Donn Harper) and Player (Thomas Carter). His business is jeopardized, however, when he runs afoul of neighborhood racketeer Goldie (Rudy Ray Moore). Their rivalry escalates until the threat of a freeway being built through their neighborhood obliges them to cooperate in order to fight city hall.

Black Phone 2

PRAISE: This sequel takes place four years after escaping the clutches of The Grabber, 17-year-old Finn and his psychic sister Gwen are tormented anew.
I liked that the film raises the stakes in various threads in the film that were interesting. Its more of a dive into the past and the main characters connections to it. The characters are still greatly portrayed by Mason Thames as Finney Blake
Madeleine McGraw as Gwen Blake and Gwen is still dishing out salty dialogue and insults. There are also good turns by excellent Demian Bichir, and Arianna Rivas. The blood and gore are provided in doses but this is not completely a gore fest and there are definitely scenes in which it could have leaned into it big time. Everything is in place as it should be especially characters dealing with trauma and then some. I liked the direction of the action and some horrific visual moments that were very haunting and shocking to watch. Ethan Hawke once again provides enough sinister creepiness as the Grabber when he's actually in the movie

PROBLEMS: The movie is a bit lacking in originality this time around. I could easily pick out what horror movies the movie was borrowing from. There are some scenes and situations I couldn't fully embrace. Definitely not as involving as the first movie. Some parts of the movie dragged so much i started thinking should i go to the grocery
store or Burger King after the movie.

Scale of 1 to 10 a 6½

Ringu: Spiral
1998

5/10

I watched this last night on the road on tubi. It is a sequel to the “Ringu” that I reviewed earlier in the thread.

The first film was like the Hollywood remake. I went into this film expecting it to be similar to the Hollywood version “The Ring 2”. This film is far different from the Hollywood version.

I’m not gonna spoil it, but the premise of this film definitely impressed me. It starts out dealing with the video tape and after 40 minutes into it, the film goes into a different unexpected direction. That’s as far as I will say.

Hiroyuki Sanada makes a cameo in this film in flashbacks/hallucinations with the main character in this movie. Different characters are introduced thru out the film.

I decided to look into it and discovered that the Japanese film company filmed this and the first film about the same time. The first film was a box office success, but this sequel bombed in the Japanese box office badly. I have no idea why it bombed, but Hollywood should have done this film version and ran with it continuing the franchise for another 2/3 films.

The Japanese company decided to drop this film from canon and redo a new “Ringu 2”. This new version is on tubi and I will get too it…at some point…

Like the first film on tubi, this too is subtitled. Subtitles doesn’t slow down the pace of the film.

Synopsis

A young pathologist seeks answers to the mysterious death of a friend and soon comes into contact with the same cursed videotape that caused the death of the friend's wife and son, which is haunted by the curse of Sadako, a relentless spirit.

A good “Back To The Future” sequel would be too bring back the original cast from the films.

Have Michael’s character with Parkinson’s and Christopher’s character dealing with onset of Alzheimer’s.

Come up with a plot having them return to the 3 prior films when they realize in current time they accidentally made small mistakes in each film and have to go back and try and correct them.

This will allow them to close out the characters officially.

There I go again with a idea knowing Hollywood is lurking on this forum.

Petey Wheatstraw
1977

3/10

This is the 4th film in Rudy Ray Moore’s film catalog and the 3rd where he was the main star in. I watched it last night on the road on tubi.

It’s a comedy/horror film. Nothing for horror, but it has comedy.

Like Rudy’s 2 prior films he starred in, it’s full of fake Kung-Fu, shit talking, one-liners and funny visuals. The film has a number of returning actors from his first two films. A number of actors you might be familiar with from “Sanford & Son”, being that Rudy and Redd Foxx both came up together on the “Chitterling Circuit”.

It’s a humorous film, not LOL funny, but you will enjoy it if you are familiar with Rudy’s work. The film is based off one of his comedy skit characters.

For the Thirsty, there is semi-nudity of Black women from the waist up.

Synopsis

Hoping for a grandchild, the devil sends his minions to find the man (Rudy Ray Moore) who promised to marry his ugly daughter (Eboni Wryte).

The Home

This horror flick does have its good moments in its story about a graffiti artist named Max ( Pete Davidson), who works at a retirement home as part of his court-ordered community service and begins noticing strange occurrences relating to the home's elderly residents. There's some really good haunting imagery especially the Red Room scenes which I wish there was more of. The movie slowly but surely becomes a gorefest as Max is put through the paces and I struggled with the pacing as more was revealed about what's going on at the assisted living home. There are quite a few unintentional laughs especially when Davidson looks like he's going to laugh at or takes his time to react to the horrific antics of the characters within the flick. I actually liked the twist as it did its best to be original. The overacting from the cast was pretty funny. Oh and some unique and good kills were fun to watch.

Tubi Strikes Content Distribution, Ad Sales Pact With Bell Media

BY ETAN VLESSING
OCTOBER 23, 2025

The strategic partnership includes plans to co-develop original content for distribution on Tubi globally, across Bell Media platforms in Canada, and through Sphere Abacus, Bell Media’s international content distribution arm. Bell Media will also serve as the exclusive Canadian ad sales partner for Tubi, while its own ad-supported FAST channels will launch on the Fox streaming platform in Canada.

…That development deal sees the Canadian company and Fox partner on local originals for Bell Media’s CTV network and Crave streaming platform that in turn land on the Fox network in the U.S. market. Fox Entertainment handles global distribution of the Canadian originals.

The expanded content distribution pacts allow Fox, Tubi and Bell Media to share the costs and risks on TV series to be shot in Canada and that tap local tax credits and currency savings. The series will then land on linear TV and streaming platforms on both sides of the U.S.-Canadian border.

Michael Finley as Bart Millard, the lead singer who wrote the song about his relationship with his father (Dennis Quaid). Madeline Carroll, Trace Adkins, Priscilla Shirer, and Cloris Leachman also star.

Speaking of Jennifer Lawrence ... the scene that most caught me off-guard from her was the nude fight scene in this comedy. It was legitimately funny ...
