Stroker Ace
1983

For the Thirsty, Loni Anderson was still in her prime when filming. There is no nudity from her, but there is a scene of her in her bra/panties laying on the bed. It’s unclear if it’s actually her or a body double with how the scene is filmed.

PRAISE: Watching this movie I recalled two stranger than fiction stories. One was the story of a guy who knew that in a local check cashing place stacks of food stamps and cash would not be in a safe but left behind the protective glass in various clerks windows so in the middle of the night he used every tool he had to get through the roof and steal the food stamps and cash. Two the story of a couple who lost their reservation for a hotel so they spent their nights in a twenty four hour Walmart. This movie goes down a similar path and its the true story of former soldier and professional thief Jeffrey Manchester who finds a hideout inside a Toys "R" Us, surviving undetected for months while planning his next move. To pull off a few situations Manchester finds himself in he has to be charming and then some and Channing Tatum in his portrayal of Manchester he has exceptional and perfect charm,in fact this is on of Tatums best performances. Also high praise to Kirsten Dunst as Leigh Wainscott a woman Manchester starts a romantic and more relationship with. Dunst is another actress that I find myself completely believable in a role in which she is a mother and no nonsense about what she wants in life. One of the best moments in the movie is watching Manchester regain what he once had in his life so much so for a few moments i forgot what he was up to.It was astonishing to watch such a smart person do absolutely dumb things. As Mitch, Peter Dinklage is at his obnoxious and uncaring best. As fellow Army vet Steve ,LaKeith Stanfield was pretty good as a man whi sees right through Manchester. There is a great realization moment between two characters that was perfectly done.

PROBLEMS: I wish more had been done with a couple of side characters, i liked their small town vibe. A couple of moments were very hard for me to buy into. There was a very predictable moment.

Channing Tatum charms his way into big trouble in ‘Roofman’

In the new movie Roofman, Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst ooze with their signature charm and chemistry. Tatum plays an exceptionally savvy military veteran who robs fast food joints by entering through the rooftops. Eventually he gets caught and sent to prison, but he’s able to escape and hides out in a Toys “R” Us for several months undetected. Obviously, he can only survive on M&Ms and keep up the ruse for so long before the roof comes crashing down on him. Consequences!

Hollywood Shuffle
1987

7.5/10

I watched this last night on the road on tubi. The last time I had seen this film was on VHS in the early 90s.

Over this past summer, for whatever reason Robert Townsend was trending on my YouTube recommendations. It looked like he was going on a Podcast tour over the summer for whatever reason. I didn’t watch any of the videos, but it got me interested in rewatching his films.

This classic indie film is mainly a satire on Hollywood and its depiction of Blacks in cinema. It’s full of “Dream” sequences involving Roberts character as he navigates going thru Hollywood auditions.

The film has a number of well known actors before they became household names like Kenan and Damon Wayans and John Witherspoon.

This film inspired a ton of Classic Memes/GIFS in the early days of the internet.

For the Thirsty, Anne-Marie Johnson co-stars, she was still relatively unknown when this film debuted, but she was still in her prime in looks in this film. There is a scene with her as a hooker, they make her look rough, but she is still fine.

If you don’t know, Robert struggled to finance this film by borrowing money and maxing out credit cards. Lots of “Stealth” filming took place (filming without a permit) and you can tell when it’s done throughout.

A lot of what is pointed out in this film with Black stereotypes is still relevant in Hollywood today. The film shows not much has changed.

Synopsis

Aspiring actor and hot-dog stand employee Bobby Taylor (Robert Townsend) catches the ire of his grandmother (Helen Martin) for auditioning for a role in the regrettably titled exploitation film Jivetime Jimmy's Revenge. When Tinseltown Studios casts Taylor in the title role, he has a series of conflicted dreams satirizing African-American stereotypes in Hollywood, and must reconcile his career goals with his desire to remain a positive role model for his little brother (Craigus R Johnson).

I thought it was ok, but it was more with how it looked than story. Especially since I saw it in IMAX 3D. The script and writing were sort of whatever and forgettable. It made something simple complex. Plus, it ends up being pretty predictable.

Damn, Ian Gallagher? Were you on set for more than 30 minutes?

The acting was whatever.

It also leaves a lot of questions.

Why that ship and why was it shaped like that?

Money doesn't matter, huh? Just go fly to another country and buy a Ducati.

That was a long 29 minutes. No rush or anything, huh?

The Nine Inch Nails was :dunno:

Black Phone 2

First, those kids got big and thankfully are good actors.

Was Ethan Hawke actually in this movie? He's missed.

It was ok. One thing, these types of movies shouldn't be over an hour and 30, so after a bunch of unnecessary and redundant flashbacks I was like we get it already. This shouldn't have been a two hour movie. It seemed like the director just wanted to show off his use of 8MM. I got bored often during this movie.

Black Phone became Nightmare on Elm Street and because I've seen Dream Warriors recently, I knew what was going to happen. I wonder how it is to people not well aware of the Nightmare franchise.

The funny thing is I heard a discussion when I was leaving about how nobody died. That's this movie. It was a money grab.

Nothing to rush to see in the movies, but it's cool to see in October if you see it on streaming.

Die My Love is a 2025 American psychological dark comedy-drama film directed by Lynne Ramsay, from a screenplay she co-wrote with Enda Walsh and Alice Birch. Based on the 2012 novel Die, My Love (Spanish: Matate, amor) by Argentine writer Ariana Harwicz, it centers around a new mother who develops postpartum depression and enters psychosis. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, with Lawrence also producing. The supporting cast includes LaKeith Stanfield, Nick Nolte, and Sissy Spacek.

The film had its world premiere in the main competition of the 78th Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2025, where it received a six-minute long standing ovation. It is scheduled to be released in the United States and Canada on November 7, 2025.

Drafted: Origins

This film immediately came up in my tubi recommendations after watching the series “Demascus”. Reading the synopsis caught my attention and I watched it tonight on the road on tubi.

It’s a Black “Superhero” film. It’s labeled as a series on tubi.

The film did not live up to anything I was hoping for. It does a poor job with character introduction/development. I had no clue on who was who or what their purpose was when I started watching and they were introduced.

There are a couple of flashback scenes, with these I was completely lost on who the flashback scenes were for. About 30 minutes into it I was ready to give up on it, but decided I was invested in it, I might as well finish it.

Around the last 15 minutes of the film, it started getting interesting and held my attention to the end. The film slowly started making some sense at this point.

VFX/SFX is just below the level of Arrowverse shows. There really isn’t anything for action. It’s basically a B-Movie “Hood” film.

I couldn’t find any information on the film and if there is plans on continuing the plot. There is a mid-credit scene.

I did notice that tubi is flooded with a lot of Black Sci-Fi, Thriller and Horror films. They all look low budget and hood, but it is interesting that these films are being made.

Watch if you are curious or wait until a sequel comes out…if that happens.

Halloween

Halloween kills

Halloween ends

Just got through watching all three of these movies. And the first movie of this trilogy. Is Easily the best one , point blank, period. The second was good but not as good as the first.

To me part 3 is just money grab, filled with unnecessary nonsense. After watching this I feel this trilogy. Should've only been 2 movies.

If there was ever a case for someone to do a fan edit. For a movie with multiple sequels. This would be it.

I would recommend the first 2 movies and just watch the the ending of the 3rd .

Apple announced on Friday that it had signed a five-year deal to bring Formula 1 exclusively to Apple TV in the U.S. The deal had been rumored for a while, but now it’s official: Apple just landed one of the world’s most popular—and fastest-growing—sports.

As Apple continues to build out its Apple TV subscription, sports are the obvious place to turn. Apple has dabbled in sports with its MLS package and Friday Night MLB, but this is different. In fact, buried in the press release was something I didn’t expect: Some of it will be free.

Specifically, the company says all practice sessions and select races will be available in the Apple TV app, even for people who don’t pay for an Apple TV subscription. That might sound small, but it completely changes what this deal is really about. Apple didn’t just buy the rights to show F1 races in the U.S., it’s using them to build a funnel.

This is great breakdown of how a studio successfully targeted its existing audience and under served populations with extremely high coordination marketing especially using social media. It raises a lot if questions on why this isnt more common and also why this works for SOME projects and not others.

I like how they don't panic with their misses but focus on their wins and stay not afraid to take risks.

The took a huge swing with Megan which I actually thought was clever and wiffed but dusted off and made Black Phone 2 a win.

Shout out to A24 also. Smashing Machine was a risk but if the Rock wins ANYTHING for that role? It was worth it.

Agreed. Happy to see the success that A24 has had over the years too. They're well-respected by the movie community.

Also, doing the Smashing Machine movie was an uphill battle from jump. Mark Kerr himself last competed 16 years ago in 2009, and the original documentary of the same name that the film remakes is lesser-known (but well respected in the MMA community) and from 23 years ago.

* Side note ... I haven't seen the movie, but Mark Coleman is featured in it as a friend / training partner. He's had quite the life himself. Really enjoyed the MMA podcast he co-hosted in the 2010s. It was based in the Ohio area with 3 other friends. 1 a radio host, another a then-active fighter (Matt Brown) and MMA journalist Damon Martin (from MMAFighting). Enjoyed hearing their stories and shootin' the shit. Coleman seemed like good people. Happy to see him pull through in recent years. He suffered a heart attack in 2020, and rescued his parents from a house fire in 2024 and was hospitalized / in critical condition from the smoke inhalation thereafter. Back in better health now.
