There is no doubt that Morton and Bechet used it, but the idea that Jazz would not have to continue to evolve without it is insulting, Jazz evolved during slavery, got it's name and sound during Reconstruction and flourished during Jim Crow, it would have continued to evolve either way, just as Hip Hop has evolved in the 5 decades it has existed.
