When Malik Robinson graduated from high school, the decision to attend college was an easy one. “The knowledge of self that you get from an HBCU [historically Black college or university] in terms of being Black is incomparable to other institutions,” he told The Root. Now a senior at Alabama A&M University, Robinson said he has no regrets...but he’s an anomaly.

In fact, when he graduates, Robinson will be the first man in his family with a Bachelor’s degree, and unfortunately, his story is more common than we realize. Black men attend college at a shockingly low rate compared to any other demographic. And according to Calvin Hadley, an assistant provost for academic partnerships and student engagement at Howard University and 2008 Howard grad, low Black male enrollment is not just an HBCU issue.

Hadley told Juana Summers from NPR that while 25 percent of Howard’s student population is male, “recent statistics said around 19% Black male” attend the university. This percentage is the same as non-Black students attending the institution known as “the Black Mecca.”

American writer Touré shared news of the this shocking statistic on TikTok, and the responses from were shocking. “As a high school counselor I see this first hand,” @thicc_daddy_68 wrote. “They have become so disconnected from school despite all the interventions we try. Unfortunately so many of them think they’ll make it as pro athletes & musicians.” According to a study by Gallup, the main reasons why Black students drop out of school boils down to emotional stress, mental health, and the cost of higher learning.

@the_professionalsmartass responded to Touré’s video, saying, “I think multiple things are happening here. Debt is one but also hustle culture created this narrative that college isn’t needed to become successful. Internet is filled with get rich schemes.” The average cost to attend a private college or university in the U.S. is around $43,000, according to U.S. News and World Report.

Another user, @actuallyjustashlee, noted how a lack of education also impacts dating within our community. “It’s also effecting relationships in the black community because education is a sticking point in dating,” she said. Black women continue to dominate college enrollment, especially at HBCUs, but this begs the question: what about our Black men who are historically more likely to be left behind academically?

Black males graduate at a lower rate than Black females, according to Ed Trust, and that’s across the board. Hadley made clear that “this is not a Howard problem. This is not an HBCU problem. This is not a PWI problem,” he said. “This is an American education problem.”

Without Black men on college campuses, Hadley noted their growing absence is “felt on campus...in our social clubs.... [and] on the yard. And I think many of our male students have commented that in some of their classes, they’re the only male in their class.” Devonte Usher, a former Howard student, said in his own experience, being in classes surrounded by women left him feeling “like I was the odd one out.” He continued saying “I felt like I was going to be called out more... because the demographic was not on my side in terms of sex.”

There are many reasons why Black men in particular aren’t getting their degrees. But as the New York Times reported, a large reason is a lack of family and community support. “We see a lot of school programs and districts that are giving up on students and giving up on Black men before they even give them a chance,” said Howard’s student president, Skylar Wilson. “They expect them to be bad,” she continued. “They expect them to be problems.”

Black males gets no credit or pussy for slow success that can take ten years to obtain, because this generation of women are looking for instant gratification and this is what's grooming young black men to crash out chasing that fast money that often results in them sacrificing their future, freedom and life.
My nephew for example, played CEO for a rap table with dreams of becoming the next Master P. Sure at first he got the hot hoes, but now in his mid 30s life is weighing down on him to the point he is looking dusty and older than me.
Not saying College is the answer but young black males gave to resist the allure of taking shortcuts in life for that fast money, fast women and fast times.

Parenting
If it's parenting they why black women are still going to College, with the same parents? Don’t get me wrong I am not saying it isn't parenting, what I want you yo do is dive deeper as to why and how it works, give me the working mechanics (this is usually where the meat and potatoes a.k.a. solution is).

Niggas don't want all them student loans. Better to go to a tech school if you not on academic scholarship.

This is the main issue....too many of us are anti education

How many are actually even going to trade school?

I see a lot of us going to jail and doing illegal shit.

A good book to read about this topic is "Of Boys and Men" by Richard Reeves.

Of Boys and Men https://www.amazon.com/dp/0815740662?tag=vp314-20

He pointed out that there's a way smaller percentage of male teachers/figures in the classrooms that has an affect. Another thing is that young boys biologically struggle more than girls early & have delays in learning. He talked about redshirting boys in kindergarten.

Or get a certification or become an apprentice. I just listened to a podcast the other day where they are saying, blue collar jobs are about to boom with all these layoffs with white collar jobs. I learned in my early 20 and during my time in the military, that there are definitely more ways to success than going to college and going into debt.

I think this does not explain the sudden drop in today's College.
Think this way, the worst thing for a young black man out of high school is to be labeled broke and dusty, and to go to College means sacrificing at least 5 years of potential income and another five to pay off any loans after that. Assuming he has a decent major and can graduate on time, we are still talking about them sacrificing their love life for the promise of success.
Today's young black men know that unless they are extremely handsome or come from a really affluent family with values, chances are being regular or average isn't going to cut it with most sisters their age.
What crazy that same chick could be broke as fuck living from one friend to the next, while going to college and she will be viewed as a positve sister working on getting her shit together, while a young man in that very same position will be looked at as broke, dusty and lame. This, coupled with the music industry brainwashing a generation to think that the more a man pays for a woman the more he loves her and the more of a man he is, forces many men to bypass Colleges with their loans, and so called promise that perhaps they might some day be able to afford shit and get the woman he wants ten years from them when he's 35 and in their minds an Unc.
Nobody will tell you this, but you know deep in your heart this shit is 100% truth!

I graduated from Georgia Tech 13 years ago and it was the same thing back then, hence there was another reason to go to college and try to be something.

We probably had it easier coming of age in the Obama years though. Its kinda hard not to be shit when a black man is running(symbolically) the country. You could sweet talk a lot of women who didnt know better with dreams of you being the next Obama. Now? Hell, Michelle cant go a single podcast episode without mentioning how much she hates the nigga. Seething about him not helping raise the kids while literally getting them into the white house and multimillion dollar book deals. Just proof that if even he wasnt good enough, what chance do you have?

Honestly, if its as bad as people are saying, Black women should be throwing themselves at black men on campus.

What difference will it make, it will just put more "corny niggas" on the dating market. That aint what they want no matter their incone, educational attainment, or status.

Something that wont be said is that a lot of these women on PWI campuses WANT a white boy(or Asian now that these K-pop dudes are being pushed). When they cant get those they want to settle with what they consider the top black guy(athletes). The Athletes have their pick, hence why you see so many people get mad when these dudes have white chicks around.

No, because even though both of them are broke and struggling in college, in her mind, it's insulting for her to date a dusty dude. Again, not all women and men are like this, but it's enough to bring down the percentage of black men attending college today.

How are they sacrificing by going to college out of high school? Its not that many options for an 18 yr old

A lot of people are not built for blue collar work

Dam this is wild to me. I initially wanted to go to PV, but I knew my horny ass would've probably got a chick pregnant. I went to UH instead lol

Because they risk being called broke, dusty, and not worthy of most top-rated women their age, especially when they are competing against older men, sometimes white dudes, and the fast lifestyle that is seducing many black women their age.

I’d go to college for this reason. To quote BIG “All them hoes I got to like one.”
It's a gold mine if you choose not to focus on fast women. But sadly, many of the youth today want the baddie type chicks that are plastered by social media, music, and other influences. This is where good upbringing and good families have a better chance of mediating the ills of social media, but as the central black families continue to shrink, giving way to overworked single parents, and teenage mothers parents who lack the maturity to properly raise a child in today's world, many of them fall prey to the evils of social media and its influences, creating a cycle of destruction of the black race, one generation at a time.

Black folks really overvalued and overrate college. College is a TOOL, not an accomplishment.
And like most tools, it has to be used correctly with skill. Because college is competitive, in many fields only the top 10% will get the most out of their degrees, and if you major in the wrong subjects, welp, basically your degree will be worthless.
Most people who claim that its a scam or overrated, most likely didn't make the top ten in their field of study or majored in some junk discipline, which the college gave and charged an arm and a leg knowing damn well there are no real world jobs for that crap!

I think we agree. IMO we tend to see a college degree as more of an accomplishment/goal rather than a tool for a career or opportunity. Alot of us tend to major in low leverage degrees like Psychology,Sociology,Global Studies, Political Science, Communications, Ethnic Studies, and African American Studies. These degrees typically are among the easiest to get but have low leverage for well paying careers. My extended family is full of proud degree holders without well paying careers. Personally, I'm guiding my kids to junior college where they can take General Electives and hold off on paying for a University until they have a solid career goal.

Do you know what the term dusty means? Dusty is a dirty looking motherfucker. If you wash your ass, wash and iron your clothes you can't be labeled as dusty.. you live in NYC most jobs for teens and early 20s make more than $15 bucks an hr.. you can buy new clothes, go out, buy liquor, food, etc so how are you considered broke? You not rich by far but you can move around and fuck plenty of chicks who don't have a job, chicks in college, and broads probably at your job.. I know bunch of young dudes with descent jobs that are getting pussy.. hell some are copping used whips and driving.. so job, car, money in their pockets pussy access is plenty . Also there's wayyyyyy more sluts between 18-30 than our era so it's all kinda pussy available.. hell I see all kinds nigs that would be Virgins or dry dick nigs in our era that are getting pussy cause standards are less for today's chick and cause of the higher slut percentage

In my day, that's what 'dusty' meant; now, a lot of younger girls think that if a guy doesn't have a cool car and doesn't have their own crib, they're considered 'dusty' and 'broke, especially if they are dimes.
