Some say it’s part of the trade talks but others think he received a talk or two from our institutes

US colleges and universities are losing billions of dollars in revenue due to declining enrollment from Chinese international students
. Many institutions became increasingly dependent on international tuition to offset rising costs and falling domestic enrollment, leaving them financially vulnerable.
Financial impact of the decline
The reduction in Chinese student enrollment is a significant financial hit for many US colleges and universities.
  • The Institute of International Education estimated that enrollment fell from 372,532 Chinese students in 2019 to 277,000 by 2023, eroding $14 billion in tuition revenue.
  • For the 2024–2025 academic year, the Association of International Educators (NAFSA) predicted a 15% overall drop in new international students, potentially costing the US economy $7 billion.
  • Small private institutions and certain academic departments, especially STEM fields, are hit particularly hard due to their high reliance on international student revenue and research contributions.
  • Some universities have faced substantial shortfalls, such as the University of Miami, which reported a $59 million deficit linked to a drop of 1,500 Chinese students.
Factors driving the decrease in Chinese enrollment
Multiple factors have contributed to the falling number of Chinese students enrolling in US colleges:
  • US-China geopolitical tensions: Escalating tensions and anti-China rhetoric have led to increased scrutiny of Chinese students and visa restrictions, particularly for those in STEM fields. In a 2024 study, 72% of Chinese students cited US policies and geopolitical tensions as influencing their enrollment decisions.
  • Uncertainty with visa and immigration policies:Students have been deterred by mixed messages and inconsistent federal policies concerning student visas, leading many to feel unwelcome.
  • Concerns over safety and discrimination:Chinese students have cited a rise in anti-Asian racism, as well as concerns about gun violence, as reasons for choosing not to study in the US.
  • High costs and diminishing returns: For some, the high cost of a US degree is no longer seen as a worthwhile investment. Some Chinese companies now favor graduates from domestic universities over foreign ones, complicating job prospects after graduation.
  • Increased competition from other countries:The UK and South Korea have been actively working to attract international students, while China has also bolstered its own educational infrastructure.
Consequences beyond university budgets
The financial losses are having broader effects on the US economy and higher education system:
  • Impact on local economies: The decline affects local economies in college towns, which lose out on billions in student spending on housing, food, and other services.
  • Loss of innovation: Reduced enrollment, especially among Chinese doctoral students in STEM, risks stifling innovation and weakening US competitiveness.
  • Recruitment shifts: To compensate for the loss of Chinese students, many US universities are intensifying recruitment efforts in other countries, such as India, Vietnam, and nations in sub-Saharan Africa.

It's all about the :money:foreign students cannot qualify for financial aid. Typically they pay up front or from one semester to the next.

Learning institutions rely on these wealthy cash payers, Trump knows this and is doing his part to help keep them from going bankrupt.

Fucks up the entire local economy. Those Chinese students gotta pay rent and buy EVERYTHING. Now they are not. Damage has been done.

Plus, we lose these kids to other countries.

Trump is destroying this place like everything else he touches. Racists win or are winning.

Not to mention they’re the sons and daughters of rich families which means -> future leaders of foreign countries, treat them badly and trading with those countries in the future will be complicated as fuck !
