It is a shame, but intellectuals don’t need to depends on colleges to be intellectual. We in the modern era with endless social media platforms and tool to educate. These old researchers need to get with the times. Funding will be cut, but it’s time to get to hustling differently.

I’m in higher education. We have a lot of older professors stuck in their ways. The disconnect between them, students, and society is CRAZY.

Think about how a professor of 20 or 30+ years trying to educate an 18 year old on what they need to know in THIS society and in THIS timeframe.

I’m not in disagreement with you, but what I’m saying is that authoritarian regimes usually go after academics, intellectuals and their institutions. They seek to control what’s in schools, what programs get shut down, what scientific endeavors can and can not be funded and researched. They will go after intellectuals no matter the platform. I don’t disagree that there is a lot of fat and grift in the higher education system. But this move is a step towards dismantling academic and rebuilding it in their image.

No doubt. They currently suspended or cancelled all government contracts with the word “climate” in it. Numerous research grants are being pulled (including a $200k grant in my department), leaving folks coming into the semester wondering where they are going to get money from.

I agree that authoritarian regimes go after the scholars first when it comes to dismantling society, but history has also shown us some of our most expressive and scholastic achievements coming on the heels of some type suffering. So it will be interesting to see the responses.
