Movie News: Ryan Coogler & Michael B. Jordan - SINNERS - jim crow era vampire flick (SPOILERS OPEN!!!)

They should’ve kept him in but he was too hot at the time so I get it.
You know he was supposed to be the character that walks off into the moonlight with the white woman, right? Can you imagine if white Corretta wouldn't of had her King running down the street away from her?

So what is Majors responsibility? Shouldn't he be held to the same standard?

Shouldn't he be committed to not reducing us? Because we seen Coogler is. Delroy is. MJB is. So was Chadwick (RIP)

Majors was in a long term toxic relationship with a problematic white girl... that apparently MANY people TOLD hm to stop

So THEIR career needs to suffer cause he got jungle fever?
Lol he needs to talk to Dr umar about that

And one thing I notice might be me. But all those tears in the movies were cgi right?

I will say this since I usually go to the movies on Tuesday night and I saw at least 50+ people in the theater for the 9:15 PM show (I checked the seating chart and made a count of the seats that were taken around 8:00 PM).

This is the 11th movie I have seen this year on a Tuesday night and this was definitely the largest crowd I have seen for a Tuesday night (and this was a non IMAX or Dolby showing).

Update
: 92 people attended the 9:15 PM show, they were also airing a 10:00 PM show.

He DOES deserve a second chance

but why Coogler and company have to sacrifice what could have potentially been their LAST chance?

MJB stood next to that man when it was really stressful. According to Majors himself. THAT is more important.

A REAL friend a real brother would have said nah don't put me in the movie if its gonna mess it up for EVERYBODY.

Majors aint care how his little crazy snowflake shenanigans could effect HIS associates did he? cause she could have went Buzbee and lied on his friends and coworkers.

Everything worked out like it was supposed to.

They gonna link up again. And when they do it will be great.

Michael B Jordan in Sinners with money behind him

The box office performance of Sinners has generated plenty of discussions, especially related to how much its made compared to its budget, but it's already a success story that Hollywood should be celebrating. Anticipation for Ryan Coogler's vampire movie starring Michael B. Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld was high leading up to the film's release. After seeing the filmmaker do several IP films, a big part of the excitement behind Sinners was its existence as a big budget genre film that is wholly original.

However, the higher the budget of a Hollywood production, the higher the expectations become at the box office. Sinners is not immune to that reality, and its opening weekend projections indicated it would be a rather successful start. That has not stopped a certain amount of focus turning to Sinners' budget, with reports escalating the figure to over $100 million potentially. The public's understanding of what a film needs to achieve profitability has influenced box office discussions in the past. While this movie still has a way to go to be profitable, it should already be considered a success.

Sinners Had A Record Opening Weekend Box Office

The Movie Came In Above Expectations

  • Smoke (Michael B. Jordan) looking tired and covered in blood in Sinners

Opening in theaters over Easter weekend, Sinners had a great first weekend at the box office. The movie made $48 million domestically during its first three days, with Easter Sunday delivering higher results than originally expected. That put Sinners' opening weekend box office above projections, which called for a $30M-$40M performance depending on the source. With the movie also coming out in several international territories, Warner Bros. could proudly boast a $63 million worldwide opening for the film.

That's notable for several reasons. For starters, Sinners was able to dethrone A Minecraft Movie as the #1 movie in America. A Minecraft Movie has been a box office juggernaut and was the top film domestically the last two weekends. It was expected to hold onto that title for a third week before Sinners overperformed. This made Sinners the biggest opening weekend for an original movie this decade. We have to go back to Jordan Peele's Us in 2019 to find an original movie that had a bigger opening weekend at $71 million.

The climax of Sinners is a bittersweet but fulfilling ending, with the fates of Smoke, Stack, Mary, and Sammie leaving the door open to sequels.

Sinners also managed to find itself in the top 10 of several all-time box office charts with this opening weekend. Following its overperformance on Sunday, it had the seventh-largest debut during the Easter weekend. It's also the ninth-largest opening weekend for an R-rated horror movie ever, falling just behind Halloween Kills ($49.4M). The movie managed to break records right out of the gate thanks to the genre play and the wide appeal Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan's names have with audiences by now.
If we extend the weekend out to the 4-day Easter weekend (counting in the following Monday), then Sinners' box office performance gets even better. The movie earned an additional $7.8 million on Monday, bringing its domestic total to $55.8 million and its worldwide total to over $70 million.

Sinners' Opening Weekend Positions The Film To Be A Financial Success

Sinners Is On Its Path To Profitability

Warner Bros., Ryan Coogler, and anyone else involved in Sinners - as well as those who watched it in theaters and want it to succeed - should be celebrating this performance. Reports about the movie's budget range from $90 million to potentially as high as $105 million. That means that Sinners has already made roughly 70 percent of its budget back by this point. Movies typically need to make two and a half times its budget at the box office to become profitable without taking into account home video sales, merchandising, or any other sources of revenue.
Depending on which budget figure is correct, Sinners needs to make between $225 million and $262 million to be a box office success. This will require the movie to have fairly strong legs at the box office to hit the necessary figures. More specifically, Sinners needs to make three times as much money in the rest of the theatrical run as it did in its opening weekend. A lot of this legwork may need to come domestically too.
It's worth noting that Ryan Coogler's movies typically do have strong legs at the domestic box office. Creed achieved a 3.7 multiplier after making $29.6 million in its opening weekend and finishing with $109 million domestically. Black Panther had a 3.47 multiplier after a massive $202 million opening and $700 million domestic haul. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever managed a 2.5 multiplier after a $181.3 million opening weekend and $453.8 million domestic total.

If Sinners performs like Ryan Coogler's other movies at the box office, it'll be in a great spot. Matching Creed's multiplier would mean Sinners makes $177.6 million domestically. It would still make $166 million domestically by performing like Black Panther, while $120 million domestically would be achieved by playing similarly to Wakanda Forever. The strong word of mouth associated with Sinners should help its cause even though its not part of established IP. If Sinners can make anywhere between $120M and $150M domestic, international sales could push its total to profitability.
But, the necessary figure could be lower too. Warner Bros. is reportedly projecting a breakeven point of $170 million (via Puck), as the studio is taking anticipated home entertainment sales into account early on. This is uncommon to consider at this point, but the movie should also be a very in-demand option for people on PVOD later on. Coogler's pay for Sinners was also reportedly lowered at his choosing to help lower costs. In that case, it becomes much easier for Sinners to be considered a box office success.

Sinners' Box Office Performance Is Bigger Than Its Chances Of Profitability

It's A Win For Originality

How-Smoke-&-Stack-Made-Their-Money-In-Sinners

Custom image by Yailin Chacon
Even if Sinners doesn't wind up becoming a profitable release at the box office, its performance to this point is still massively important. There is a constant suggestion that Hollywood and audiences are only interested in movies tied to IP in some fashion. Whether its taking comics, books, video games, toys, historical events, or real people and making movies about them, there is often a cry for more original movies in Hollywood. It's far too often, though, that these films don't get the attention they deserve in theaters.
This can be seen by looking at this year's movies alone. Currently, the top 10 highest-grossing movies at the 2025 box office are connected to IP in some fashion. Sinners and One of Them Days are the only original movies to make over $50 million worldwide this year. Wholly original films with great reviews like Black Bag, Companion, Novocaine, Heart Eyes, and Drop did not find the audiences they deserve. These films, several of which are in the horror genre like Sinners, were overlooked in favor of mega IP: A Minecraft Movie, Snow White, or Captain America: Brave New World.

Categorizing Sinners as anything other than a massive win for theaters, Hollywood, audiences, and art is ludicrous

That's why I love seeing Sinners doing so well at the box office. It is easy for the industry to rely on IP and for audiences to return to something familiar. Sinners' vampire lore might still be familiar, but the story and themes Coogler is exploring are not. If we aren't going to celebrate an original R-rated genre film doing this well at the box office, then we might as well ignore box office performance altogether. Categorizing Sinners as anything other than a massive win for theaters, Hollywood, audiences, and art is ludicrous.

What Sinners' Box Office Success Will Mean For Hollywood

More Original Films Are Worth Doing

Close up of Michael B Jordan looking pensive in Sinners

The success that Sinners is experiencing at the box office is hopefully something that Hollywood will see and learn the right lessons from. In a broad sense, there should be even more eagerness from studios to work with Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan as their movies have a reputation for hitting with audiences. That was already happening, though, with Coogler developing several projects, including Black Panther 3, and Jordan planning for Creed 4, a new Thomas Crown Affair film, and more.

There could also be a temptation for studios to make more vampire movies specifically. Horror films are regular releases in the industry, but vampires have an uneven track record. Sinners' success comes on the heels of Robert Eggers' Nosferatu also overperforming at the box office, as it made $181 million worldwide. More vampire movies in general could be great, but these two worked so well because they were driven by established filmmakers who brought their unique perspectives and talents to the genre. That's the real takeaway here.
Hollywood should see Sinners' box office success and want to find ways to either increase their output of original films or amplify the ones that they are already making. This should be especially true when they come from established genre filmmakers whose names audiences recognize. Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino, Steven Spielberg, Jordan Peele, and others are directors whose names can bring audiences in. Ryan Coogler may now be entering that mix after Sinners. Hollywood needs to ensure he gets to do more original films and work to prop up the next generation of original genre filmmakers.

Finally saw it. I've stayed away from thread and other major spoilers. After my initial post. One thing about watching the movie is knowing that the younger folks in attendance were watching something inspired by the some genres most influential pieces of horror and sci-fi. Like if you weren't a fan of the genre, there are majority of styles of horror films you just won't see. Let alone the music was crazy. It was like going to Grandma's house for thanking giving in a family that has different cultures.

And I got a From Dusk Till Dawn feel from it. Maybe with how the general story was laid out. A complete single day where all hell broke loose. Which I wish I saw in theaters back in the day. And it's just a good vampire movie. The way they led you into the horror aspect was cool to. Like you knew it was gonna go left, you just was seeing how everything was connected. They even made sure they explained what Vampires were, like "Awwww shit. They here. Let's get a game plan."

I like the main Vampires motivation. Even with what he possessed, he knew it wasn't enough. Just like a Vampire, no matter how much it has accomplished, it always wants more.

The Indian tribe was cool. We saw what we saw. That was enough for us to know they don't fuck around. They had those Vampire on skates while being calm and collected. A great way to add their culture of straight forward business handling in that respect. Especially when it comes to cacs that overstep their boundaries. Oh I get to bust a cac over the head and shoot the shit out of them, cool.

Now I wish the once all hell broke loose that it was a bit more to it. Like the action was there, the intensity that comes from getting a good scare wasn't. But it is what it is. The basically had three endings. The vampires, the klan getting their comeuppance after he popped the trunk, and, the jump forward in time (which was really cool).

The music was great too. That will help to keep it fresh for repeat viewing. When I was leaving I heard a woman say that she was done when the wife said come in. I was thinking, "this is a horror movie, somebody gotsta fuck it up. It's one of the rules"

That my 2 wooden nickels.

And Final Destination gonna have my nerves all the way fucked up.
:smh:

And preacher boy saying he like it funky like Brian Pumper got some commotion from the women. I sat in the middle of four chicks.:lol:well that and when ol girl spat in Michael's mouth.

Eternal Gratitude. My heart is bursting with it. I want to thank each and every one of you who bought a ticket to see SINNERS. Who decided to drive to see the film in different formats. Who bought popcorn and a drink, booked a sitter and carpooled, and stood in the lobby afterwards and talked and made a friend. Who changed their work schedules. Who saw the film in groups.

I want to thank you all who watched more than once, who recommended the film to others, both in person and on social media or on your text message chains.

I had the gift of the opportunity of making a film inspired by my family and my ancestry but it was always a film that we wanted to make for audiences, in theaters. We always had our minds on you, the audience, and felt a deep responsibility to entertain you, and move you in the way only cinema can.

I believe in cinema. I believe in the theatrical experience. I believe it is a necessary pillar of society. It’s why me and so many of my colleagues have dedicated our lives to the craft. We don’t get to do what we do if you don’t show up. The global theatrical audience has allowed me to dream, find a career, and build a more sustainable life for me and my family. And the only way that I know how to thank you for that, is by continuing to mine my personal human experience and my relationships for more stories to bring to you in cinematic language. To see your response to the film has re-invigorated me and many others who believe in this art form.

For this script, this crew, and this cast, I dug deep into myself and reached back to my ancestors who breathed so much life and purpose into me. I also unabashedly reached towards my cinematic influences including but not limited to, Spike Lee, John Singleton, Ernie Barnes, Steve McQueen, Ava Duvernay, Euzhan Palcy, Eudora Welty, Oscar Micheaux, Robert Rodriguez, Barry Jenkins, Quentin Tarantino, Nicolas Roeg, Andrea Arnold, Jeremy Saulnier, Paul Thomas Anderson, Joel and Ethan Coen, Bill Gunn, Jordan Peele, John Carpenter, Boots Reilly, Shaka King, Nia Dacosta, Terence Nance, Rian Johnson, Bradford Young, David Cronenberg, David Lynch, Chris Nolan, Emma Thomas, Theodore Witcher, Francis Coppola, Julie Dash, Steven Spielberg, Kahlil Joseph, Mati Diop, Ben and Josh Safdie, Stephen King, Robert Palmer, Amiri Baraka, Martin Scorsese, Brian De Palma, George Lucas, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Walter Mosley, Stephen Graham Jones, Joel Crawford, Wes Craven, and many others.

Every time you show up to theaters you allow us to come back and do it again. And together maybe we can expand the definition of what a blockbuster is, what a horror movie is, and of what an IMAX audience looks like. I’ll see you at the movies, popcorn bucket in hand!

With many thanks,

Ryan Coogler

P.S. Much has been made about my 13 year partnership with Michael B. Jordan, my 17 year partnership with Ludwig Göransson, and my near lifelong partnership with Zinzi Coogler, but I wanted to shout out Michael Shawver our picture editor who I have been working with for 15 years. Michael did EXCEPTIONAL work on this film that isn't being talked about enough, and he missed the press tour to spend time with his beautiful kid. Want to highlight him here and thank him too.
