Defund the Police: Did you know a cop could make over $190,000 just in overtime pay?

Fuck them all and their bloated salaries. How about giving that to teachers who really make a difference. We ass backwards.

It reminds me of what MLK said: "The bombs in Vietnam explode at home; they destroy the hopes and possibilities for a decent America."

The bombs in Vietnam and tanks for American police departments similarly fund violence against the lower class while defunding peace and progress for everyone.

Yes, I did. My wife best friend's husband makes 190k year mainly in overtime. He works in one of those rich suburbs of DC.

DC teachers are comparatively well-paid and their base salary is still less than half of that.

The average salary of teachers in D.C. has been ranked in the top five average salaries in the country.

On average, D.C. teachers pulled in $84,882 for the 2023-2024 school year. Maryland teachers averaged a salary of $79,420. Virginia teachers averaged a salary of $63,103.

sorry...but a good cop is worth that amount....

It's a crazy ass job with a lot of risk.

Are you aware of where it ranks among jobs that risk death?

The most dangerous jobs in the U.S. are typically ranked based on fatality rates per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers. According to the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), here are the ten jobs with the highest fatality rates:
  • Logging Workers
    • Fatality Rate: ~80–100 per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers
    • Average Salary: Approximately $45,000 per year
  • Fishing and Hunting Workers
    • Fatality Rate: ~70–90 per 100,000 FTE workers
    • Average Salary: Approximately $30,000–$35,000 per year (often seasonal work)
  • Roofers
    • Fatality Rate: ~50–60 per 100,000 FTE workers
    • Average Salary: Approximately $40,000–$45,000 per year
  • Construction Trade Helpers (e.g., ironworkers, steelworkers, general laborers)
    • Fatality Rate: ~40–50 per 100,000 FTE workers
    • Average Salary: Approximately $35,000–$40,000 per year
  • Aircraft Pilots and Flight Engineers
    • Fatality Rate: ~30–40 per 100,000 FTE workers (this figure particularly reflects non-airline sectors such as cargo operations, crop-dusting, or bush flying)
    • Average Salary: Approximately $70,000–$100,000 per year (with wide variation depending on the type of flying)
  • Truck Drivers and Delivery Drivers
    • Fatality Rate: ~25–30 per 100,000 FTE workers
    • Average Salary: Approximately $48,000 per year
  • Structural Iron and Steel Workers
    • Fatality Rate: ~20–30 per 100,000 FTE workers
    • Average Salary: Approximately $55,000 per year
  • Farmers, Ranchers, and Agricultural Workers
    • Fatality Rate: ~20–25 per 100,000 FTE workers
    • Average Salary: Approximately $35,000 per year (note that many in this field are self-employed and incomes can vary significantly)
  • Underground Mining Machine Operators
    • Fatality Rate: ~15–20 per 100,000 FTE workers
    • Average Salary: Approximately $65,000 per year
  • Waste Collectors (Garbage and Recycling Workers)
    • Fatality Rate: ~15–20 per 100,000 FTE workers
    • Average Salary: Approximately $40,000 per year

sorry...but a good cop is worth that amount....

It's a crazy ass job with a lot of risk.

Firemen, cops, and paramedics deserve what they make.

They see the worst in people and have to control/interact with them.

Soldiers need pay raises.

Politicians and bureaucrats need pay cuts.
How is a cop worth that amount just standing around? He's not our solving crimes, protecting folks etc. He's simply standing around more than likely zoned out or looking at phone.

That's how they (almost) single highhandedly bankrupted Oakland, and even know they're holding the city hostage over even thoughts of some kind of overtime regulation.

Oakland Police is is short staffed so they have to pay overtime to fully staff their department. If they don't pay overtime, then they won't have enough cops on the street. Also, some of their overtime is paid by private companies who contract with them for security. CVS and Home Depot are two examples.

First of all “good cop” is an oxymoron.

A good cop if they did exist would rid the force of bad cops and by attempting so would exclude him from being a cop.

Chance of being shot as a cop is 1.3 in 10000….hit by lightning is 1 in 15000.

Esp. in NYC, no one wants to be a cop which is why they have the salary incentive.

Bit@#es always crying about officer safety when they got a gun and the blue gang on speed dial

What NWA said…….

Carry on……l

Cancel the union contract like Donald Trump has done TSA’s union contract

This is the scam.

No Oakland Police is really short staffed. They have been having difficulty attracting recruits who want to stay. Their recruits stay for the training, then lateral over to other Police Departments where the job is easier and the pay is higher.

Oakland only has 678 sworn cops. They had 800 a few years ago.

To keep it a buck, Oakland needs to reduce oversight and restrictions, get tougher on crime, and hire more cops. I never thought that I'd feel this way, but this is by far the worst that Oakland has been in my 40+ years here. Oakland PD has a real fucked up history, but they treat people much better than cops in surrounding cities. Especially San Leandro.

Man, I dated a cop. She made 120k one year and her base salary is 64k. C.O.s can do it too. No one wants to work that job so they have to approve overtime.
I knew a cop in the late 1990's who was making 145k a year. Since then cops are making even more money. I know a CO making 160k a year. His boss makes about 300k a year. On an average it costs 500k a year per inmate on Rikers Island. I remember back in the late 1990's when that number was closer to 67k a year. Fact remains crime pays when you work in law enforcement in NYC.
