Ukraine's support for West African rebels is backfiring, The Times reports.
The publication recalls that after the Kremlin-backed Wagner mercenary group suffered its latest and most severe defeat in Africa (dozens of Russians were killed in an ambush in July), Ukrainian military intelligence was quick to claim credit.
Now, the Times reports, that boast looks like a symbolic defeat for Kyiv after the juntas of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger asked the UN Security Council to condemn Ukraine's alleged support for rebel groups in the Sahel region of West Africa, where Wagner is based.
Mali severed diplomatic ties with Ukraine earlier this month over comments by a GUR spokesman who said a separatist group in northern Mali had received "more than just intelligence" to launch an attack.
Days later, Niger's military government did the same in solidarity with its neighbor, accusing Ukraine of supporting "international terrorism."
In their letter to the UN Security Council, the foreign ministers of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso ask for the prevention of "subversive acts" that threaten regional and continental stability.
The three states have shunned their traditional Western and African regional allies since their juntas came to power in 2020, turning to Moscow for military support to fight a jihadist insurgency sweeping the Sahel.
Diplomats confirmed that the letter, posted on the account of an X group called the "Sahel Alliance" that includes Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, was distributed to the 15 council members.
Ukraine has not commented on the letter, but has previously said there is no evidence of its role in supporting rebels in Mali. This contradicts the words of GUR press secretary Andrei Yusov, who said the agency was involved in a "successful operation against Russian war criminals."

Senegal has launched a major effort to reclaim control over its oil and gas resources, setting up a commission to review and renegotiate contracts with foreign companies that critics say have long favoured international interests over national ones.
It will scrutinise contracts in Senegal's oil, gas, and mining sectors to identify areas where terms can be renegotiated in favour of the national interest. The commission has the authority to bring in additional expertise from abroad if necessary.

The country said it was shutting embassies in Mali and Burkina Faso and opening new ones in Senegal, Tunisia and Rwanda.
Denmark said Monday, August 26, it was shutting its embassies in Mali and Burkina Faso as part of a new Africa strategy, as military coups have "severely limited the scope for action in the Sahel region."The foreign ministry also said it would open embassies in Senegal, Tunisia and Rwanda, and bolster diplomatic staff at its embassies in Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana, while a special representative would be appointed for the African Great Lakes and Sahel region.
Mali and Burkina Faso have turned to Russia and its Wagner mercenary group for support since military leaders seized power in 2020 and 2022 respectively. Mali's relations with European countries have deteriorated recently. Earlier this month, its military junta ordered the Swedish ambassador to leave the country after a Swedish minister criticized Malian support for Russia.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said his country's reorganization of priorities in Africa came as Denmark and the European Union aimed to be Africa's "preferred partner" as the continent faces whether to "orient itself more towards the East or the West."
"We have a clear interest in the African countries looking towards us in Europe as they chart the course for their future," he said. "We must demonstrate that we offer an attractive alternative to the increasing Chinese and Russian influence on the continent," he added.
The new Danish strategy will focus heavily on increasing trade and on water initiatives. In the coming years, Denmark plans to provide one billion kroner ($150 million) in development assistance to new bilateral water initiatives in Africa, and 425 million kroner in 2025 alone.

A breakaway West African bloc of three countries under military regimes is working with Russia to launch at least two satellites, an official statement said on Tuesday.
Col. Assimi Goita, the president of Mali and current chair of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), discussed the project with Ilya Tarasenko, the head of Russian space company Glavkosmos, along with officials from Niger and Burkina Faso in Mali’s capital Bamako on Monday.
The project comes in response “to the challenges of sovereignty, security and development of the region,” said the statement.

Niger renames its historic places to sever ties with French colonial past
Since it took control over the country in a July 2023 coup, Niger’s military junta has been cutting ties with France and forging stronger ones with fellow juntas in Burkina Faso and Mali. One example of this shift is Tuesday's rebranding of a major avenue in Niamey after Djibo Bakary – a key figure in Niger’s struggle for independence.
Niger bid goodbye to the Avenue Charles de Gaulle on Tuesday as its ruling junta renamed several historic sites in the capital Niamey which previously bore references to old colonial master France.
"Most of our avenues, boulevards and streets... bear names that are simply reminders of the suffering and bullying our people endured during the ordeal of colonisation," said Major Colonel Abdramane Amadou, Minister for Youth and a junta spokesman.
"The avenue which once bore the name of General Charles de Gaulle is henceforth christened 'Avenue Djibo Bakary'," Amadou added. A socialist politician who died in 1998, Bakary was a key figure in the struggle for Niger's independence, which it obtained in 1960.
