Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have experienced the ascension to power of military leaders. They have all demanded that France and its military and diplomatic corps leave their countries. The French government, led by its President Emmanuel Macron has reluctantly packed up and left these countries. It is not solely the military leaders who have called on the French to leave but the masses of Africans in those countries have demonstrated in the capitals of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso to demand the departure of the French. By and large they have supported the military leaders and felt that the civilian leadership were in cahoots with the French in keeping them impoverished, dependent and insecure.
Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger recently formed the Alliance of Sahel States (ASH) and have declared that an attack by France or its proxies in Africa against one of them is tantamount to an attack against all of them.
Maurice Carney of Friends of the Congo will join us to discuss the historical underpinnings of what is unfolding in West Africa. He will delve into the regional dynamics of ECOWAS, particularly Nigeria, the role of Russia, United States and China in the context of great power struggle for control of Africa's immense natural resources. Finally, Maurice will reveal the implications of the recent developments for the African continent at-large and the global Pan African struggle for a free and liberated Africa.
