Dude is a hero, and did what he needed to do to get home to his family.
So many inconsistencies in the story that we're supposed to believe, but I wish he would have come to us first and maybe got one of our lawyers. Getting a public pretender was a huge mistake on his part.

The federal conviction rate is like 95%, it is just a formality when you go to trial. You probably ground pounded the guy leaving all kinds of wounds on him that they have pictures. They would have had huge pictures posted up at trial. You put in danger other correction officers that could have revenge enacted on them plus they can make a phone call to cause harm to people you know.
It sounds like you are making excuses for your action, you need to stop it. You can use these as mitigating factors with your sentence.
