Mos Def on Drake: “It’s……‘mall’……music”

WE have sub-genres/categories. The industry not so much.
we can talk about sales or art but not both

creative vs commercial

musicians including producers / arraigners / composers songwriters have always establish the genres and their sub genres

the reason some artists are quick to diminish the "crossover" artist as commercial or sell out

Rolling Stone will cover ALL genres of Rock (also the occasional rapper) The Source not so much.
Rolling Stone also reports on politics finance and does investigative reporting
Source aimed at a very select portion of hip hop music and never sought to approach the other pillars of hiphop nor the underground / grassroots music outside nyc

hip hop does not line up well with rock - it would be better to draw comps to jazz

sometimes truth needs to be spoken - shout outs to Mark Lamont Hill
Bey said a lot of real shit in that sit down - but only a snippet of the bullshit goes viral - even that 1 minute longer and his point would have had context

At what point did rap switch to catering to women
When nigs found out they could make hundreds of thousands or more doing stripclub tours.. paid features, getting their music played to a large demographic.. if they got a hit in the club they were gonna get booked multiple times a yr in that club and there was a shitload of clubs in each states and diff states. Caching

I love that everytime this whack ass Canadian entertainers name comes up, it’s about his fraudulence. I been telling yaw to stop praising this feminine ass, period having bitch.

At 37 years old he shoulda been garnered the respect of his peers, yet he’s still being called out DAILY.

NOBODY in hip hop with credibility respects this man.

Never have, never will. Love that.

And YouTube. Let's not forget the world wide coverage and marketability options YouTube afforded. Long gone are the days of paying off radio station disc jockeys. Nowadays and for years, months and days you can put your material out on YouTube and get rich. Remember Gangnam Style and so many others who we have seen do it over the last decade alone.

The internet is fire. Voice over IP and cell phones killed long distance calls. I remember when it was long distance to call Mt. Kisko, NY from Mt. Vernon, NY. It's the technology that lets us be seen all over the world. That's what changed everything. Like heaux on IG and Twitter that stay getting flown out and fucked. 40 years ago we had the "fucking" personals and the Pina Colada to tell us make sure you're not hooking up with you wife. Ole Lite FM putting folks on to game.
