Mos Def on Drake: “It’s……‘mall’……music”

i like that mos def tried to choose his words carefully lol. just listening to the video it took me back to common's "i used to love her" and listening to gansta rappers criticizing regular rappers saying they ain't rappers cause they ain't hard. ....lol. bottom line rap/hip hop is universal and i love the fact that all kinds of artists with different styles can flow on a beat. drake has a bunch of styles. bottom line people can sing and relate to a lot of his songs.

While I agree with Mos, anyone ever notice that Alice Cooper never talks shyt about Green Day? Or Metalica doesn't say that about Cold Play. Linkin Park doesn't talk about how Lynrd Skynrd ain't making money anymore. Talk like this only seems to be saved for rappers.

well Alice is 40 year old stadium rock and GreenDay is studio produced industry "punk" like "Hot Topic" ;Mettallica is 90s Metal who were over 10 to 15 years ahead of Cold Play which is Pop music not rock and certainly not Metal. Lynard Skynard is HIllbilly 70s rock that no one under 60 finds relevant

everyone of those groups you listed has a vastly different audience--- people from a Green Day would never goto a Cold Pay show and none of either of those audiences would be the least bit interested in Lynard or Mettalica ...bruh you picked a bunch of wildly divergent era groups to try to make a point

Man gave his opinon when asked about the path that hip hop is on - and he is right - Drake is industry pap....and not his flavor.

Are you gonna see the same people at a Drake versus Mos Def show? I chose who I chose for a reason. The audiences are different, but they never get pitted against each other, but they'll be consumed in the same spaces. Based on your name I am going to assume that you're old enough to remember CD's in stores. Everyone I mentioned is under Rock, whether it is Alternative, Metal or Classic. Rolling Stone magazine will do a article on Metalica, Green Day, Black Sabbath, Cold Play etc... Source...they MIGHT do an article on Mos due to what was said here, but most of their magazines the artist that they cover will consist of Drakes peers. There isn't a Hip-Hop category with sub-categories of Club/Strip Club Hip-Hop, POP Hip-Hop, Underground Hip-Hop, Classic Hip-Hop or "Industry" Hip-Hop. Why is Mos Def being asked about Drake? You said yourself that the audiences are vastly different, the same can be said here. Forget the age gap between a Drake fan (18-34) and a Mos Def fan (35-40+) they aren't in the same "category". Someone 45 years old ain't watching a DJ Akedemicks so why is he talking about older Rappers? His audience more than likely won't know who he is talking about.

So different "category" of Hip-Hop, different age group of fans, so I will ask again. Why doesn't Alice Cooper ever get asked about Green Day? Or Metalica about Cold Play. Linkin Park doesn't talk about how Lynrd Skynrd ain't making money anymore. A 1:1 comparisons is not what is being done here.

Drake and Mos music are much much closer to each other in sub genre and eras than your choices

in any case Mos didn't say Drake isn't hip hop - just very commercial - this is the same critique that was leveled by rock artists against acts like Bon Jovi and other hair bands back in the 80s 90s
outlaw country sent the same shots at country acts that went pop
Metallica caught shit from other bands over songs that are considered smash hits now

btw imo Linkin Park is not metal not rock not hiphop - I classify on a song by song basis - fairest description of the band is a fusion of of the genres
or a way better evolution of Limp Biskit

Yasiin said Drake is pop.

There aren't sub genres, they are all classified as Hip-Hop/Rap

Also I am going based off of classifications that they were put into back in music stores. Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit was Rock/Alternative

True

Grammy nominations were rock and hard rock and alternative

But then Rap for the Jay Z stuff.

today rap is pop

I agree. Most definitely

But Yasiin said its not

Word to Q tip.

But I don't agree with Bey on this one.

I UNDERSTAND his overall point though from HIS PERSPECTIVE. But I just don't agree and waa playing black on both sides just this weekend.

don't get confused by sales charts
just think how many subs r&b covers that weren't individually charted -soul neo-soul funk new jack swing etc

no different than gansta, drill, boom bap, emo , trap, conscience etc

sales charts again

WE have sub-genres/categories. The industry not so much. I am also talking about how our music is consumed. Rolling Stone will cover ALL genres of Rock (also the occasional rapper) The Source not so much.

At one point pitbull and Flo Rida used to rap rap
I performed at the same event as Flo Rida before he was famous
Now he's a millionaire and I'm here on the toilet typing this shit out

That's why I mentioned them both specifically

Their hip hop credentials are solid.

But most aren't aware or care.

Are they "not hip hop" because they sell out arenas, go platinum in an Era where that is near impossible and have earned generational wealth and international recognition?

LOL Hammer had niggas pull up on Ice Cube in the Roscoe’s Parking lot after the Stay true to the game video diss and made Cube piss his pants. Literally

MC Serch and Redman both found out up close and personal not to mess with dem Burrell boys
