The MCU has gone a record amount of time without a billion-dollar movie at the box office, for a variety of reasons in and out of their own control.

Superhero fatigue hits the MCU, with audiences growing tired of the genre's dominance at the box office. DC has also been affected.

The absence of The Avengers since Endgame has impacted the MCU's earning potential, as team-up movies have historically been the highest-earning films.

Poor marketing decisions, like with The Marvels, have contributed to Marvel's recent financial lows, with inconsistent advertising and a lack of clear messaging.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is not the box office powerhouse it once was, resulting in 2023 marking two years since the franchise's last billion-dollar earner. As 2023 draws to a close, Marvel Studios have faced a year of historic financial lows, with no release cracking the one billion dollar mark since 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home. The MCU has contributed to Disney's abysmal 2023 performance in theaters, warranting close examination as to what exactly is keeping so many seats empty at the movies.

There are many reasons to point to regarding Marvel's recent lack of breakout hits. Some factors are well-within the studio's control, and the souring of general audiences on the MCU after critical flops like The Eternals, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and Thor: Love and Thunder are an easy source of blame to identify. Other factors that have prevented Marvel Studios from billion-dollar glory are more difficult to frame as bad decisions on Disney's behalf, effecting other big franchises equally at the box office. Whether this worrying trend represents the beginning of the end for Marvel's success or a momentary dip the series can recover from remains to be seen.

No but there were some with high expectations like dr strange and guardians
Did any of the Guardians movies make a billion? Unless its one of the core marvel characters like Spiderman, Iron Man or Captain America I don't see them making a Billion. I imagine most people going to these movies dont even read comics so they have no idea what is going on.

It was the last one and it was getting a lot of push for being James Gunn last movie with them. It was suppose to get that end of a saga money

Says who?
Vol 2 made 863 million world wide.. vol 1 made like 770 million… number 2 was garbage and made that much. Vol 3 was pushed as probably the best one out the 3 and the end to the saga so it’s only right to believe they were hoping to make more than the second one which would put them over 900 million and fingers crossed billion mark( especially with tix sales rising).. vol 3 actually made less than number 2

shit was depressing as fuck. It took a hit because of that, but still over 800 million isn't actually a failure.
It took a hit cause lots of mcu shit in the past few yrs been garbage or just ok.. she hulk, marvel, ant man wasn’t great, etc..
people just wasn’t feeling throwing more money at them and hoping not to be disappointed. part 3 had the best story and villain and should’ve been the top seller but all them other marvel shows/movies made people go ehhhh idk

I think you are over analyzing the "lack of the success" for this movie. For one it did comparable numbers to the others which is good since we seen a number of recent marvel movie sequels under perform or outright tank. Most folks didn't know are care about Gunn's last flick. Third for those that didn't go, they probably figure they wait until it hits streaming. Why spend damn near a hundred bucks to take a family or almost half of that on date when you can Disney plus and chill.

A lot of folks weren't feeling the animal torture subplot which probably made it difficult to sell to kids.

BTW, the movie is number 4 for top grossers of the year.

The real reason is simple.

Everyone was dialed in to see how the Infinity Saga was going to end. You really felt like you needed to asee every marvel movie to make sure you were up to date.

That's how Captain Marvel could be a character people didn't like, but still make a billion dollars. It was the last movie before Endgame.

After Endgame, is there a single Marvel saga you feel like you MUST stay up on? Does it feel like there is an overarching plan to the movies/shows?

No. It just feel like they're putting shit out to collect checks. It's been 4 years since Endgame. What are they even doing? You can easily skip any of these movies or see them when they start streaming.

If they want people to go see their movies in theaters, they need to give people a reason to want to see them in the theater. It's not complicated.

Why the current crop of MCU films hasn't made a billion dollars is simple.
#1.They're focusing on female empowerment at the expense of well loved and established male characters.
#2. They're not bringing characters the fans and casual audiences WANT to see.
#3. They're getting writers from shows like Rick & Morty. And they SUCK.
#4. They're focused primarily on promoting: "THE MESSAGE".

also shit slowed up a lot since after the pandemic .... u could blame tht also ...

y`all know i keep track of this shit ... kinda like an obsession of mine ...lol

before the pandemic we would have 5-10 movies doing over a billion ...

this year we have 2 .... 2022 we had 3 ...2021 we had 1 ... 2020 pandemic yr obviously none ...

2019 before pandemic ... 9 ...2018 ..5 ...u get the jist ....

Yep.
How could I forget about LGBTQIAXYZ+&/1234 inclusion and representation?
'Cuz absolutely no current MCU/Lucasfilm/Disney+ project can exist without them...

So somebody asked it, what movies actually hit those big box office numbers this year??

Maybe Guardians 3, Barbie, Oppenheimer... I really can't think of anymore besides those

No one wants to leave their fucking house anymore.
Everyone is a fat slob who watch movies by illegal methods.
If yall had to go to the movie to see shit and the internet had blocks on it.

ALL these movies would be making 2 Billion at the minimum.

Also people aren't putting into consideration all the delays and issues from COVID to the actors strike.
Actors could not promote their own movies until 2 weeks ago.

Captain Marvel made 1.1 Billion. With a female hero.

Ant Man Quantumania with a white Male star (I know how much you want your stars to be white males) and no LGTBQ message made 476 million.

Don't put your biases and fuckery on the rest of the audience.

GOTG3 was one of the better post Endgame films.

GOTG3
SHANG CHI
SPIDERMAN 3

I think the issue is Marvel isn't connecting these movies together, like what should the viewers look forward to? We don't know what we should look forward to (without the leaks).

Most of the pre-endgame films post credits were connected with the next movie or the next big event. Shang Chi rings sent out a signal and Antman 3 Kang variants proceeded to make a move. The big issue is the lack of connection

People are absolute assholes. Going to the theater means people making hella noise, talking during the movie, and having to get into fights if you ask someone to be quiet. Nobody got time for that.

The theater experience sucks and you pay a grip for the privilege.

I don't disagree.
However my points still remain.

I agree...

When it's all said and done, can you tell a good story? For the most part, they haven't. For those old head comic guys like myself, we know the character's backgrounds pretty well. So if you're writing, you should take that into account.

They damn near made the Thor movies comical. To me, these should have been the most dark. Thor was based off of the Norse myths, and in the books Hela is Thor's niece, just as in the myths. What genius has the bright idea to make her Thor's sister? For what reason? This alone was a huge annoyance to me. If they adhere to the comics, the stories will damn near write themselves.

And the female empowerment crap just makes me want to vomit. I need some saltine crackers and ginger ale just thinking about it.
