This is crazy. It usually goes the other way..like here in charlotte, a big mac at McDonald's cost different depending on what side of town you're on, but it's usually higher in the nicer area, but not by much

It's been going on building up in the east coast for awhile...

Food deserts, lower quality, low stock, more expensive.

I would say since covid but it was happening before... bigger spotlight now because of the economics.

I've seen first hand an area I would have sworn would be expensive as hell food wise and I ended up unexpectedly doing a week's worth of shopping taking an uber home and STILL saving money.

Interesting. Where is the actual study though? What did they track in 2 months?

Reason I'm asking is because we got a giant eagle in a low-income area and they have to have actual police security, a seperate security company for the parking lot, and had to remove self-checkouts. And the prices are the same as giant eagles in the better places that don't have all the additional expenses.

Not saying they didnt uncover some shit, it just usually don't seem to work that way unless talking about the corner stores folks buy groceries from.

They said in Boston it’s like that.. so if you not from Boston than this dosent apply to ya.. certain states have diff bullshit that applies to certain demographics

Maybe it costs more to operate in low income neighborhoods

This is nothing new. This comes up every so often with the argument that it's more expensive to open businesses in black neighborhoods because of things like security.

No doubt, so if it is local to boston how many stores were in the study? And mind you, Ohio is always clowned on here for being one of the most racist places. Cleveland area is listed as one of the most segregated in the country.

Well, the expense is true. Just saying haven't seen the big stores do shit like this. But they do seem to cut back on employees inside the stores because they need to invest in security. So only 2 lines open and shit like that.

It's true and has been going on since forever.

-White people/other's just won't pay a certain price for certain items at all, especially older people
-Young people tend to just spend, bargains is something they don't have time for.

Are the youth unaware of the “bargains” or is it hard for them to get to the bargain?

I remember back in the day when the corner store was charging more than $2 more for milk than the supermarket.

When you go to Costco, you always see one Asian or Hispanic person with 40 cases of water, soda, and other miscellaneous shit.

When you're young you don't care about bargains, sales, coupons or none of that stuff, you want what you want and you'll pay a higher price. It's not hard and maybe some are unaware but its mostly has to do with discipline or the lack of

For decades, one of the biggest blind spots of most civil-rights “leaders” and “spokesmen” for the black community has been their utter lack of knowledge of economics.

Prices, in fact, do tend to be higher – and the quality of service and products lower – in stores in low-income neighborhoods. But the knee-jerk assumption that this represents exploitation or racism ignores economics.

Many of the ghetto stores charging high prices are struggling to survive, while supermarkets in other neighborhoods are very profitable charging lower prices. There are many reasons for this.

One reason is that crime, shoplifting, vandalism and riots have raised the costs, both directly and by causing insurance rates and the costs of security to be higher.

The costs of delivering goods to small neighborhood stores are also higher than the costs of delivering goods to huge supermarkets. Delivering 100 cartons of milk to a supermarket is cheaper than delivering 10 cartons of milk to each of 10 local stores scattered around town.

Selling a customer $50 in groceries in a supermarket takes less time than selling 10 customers $5 in groceries in a little neighborhood store. Faster turnover is one of the keys to a supermarket’s lower prices.

A supermarket can prosper with one cent of clear profit on each dollar of sales because that dollar comes back to be re-used again and again in the course of a year.

Few local stores can match that. Not only are the delivery and overhead costs of the local store likely higher, the slowness with which its inventory turns over means that even higher prices may not fully compensate for such differences.

The cumulative effect of such cost differences is that prices are often higher and at the same time profit rates lower in poor neighborhoods.

One of the factors limiting what a ghetto store can charge is that many ghetto residents already shop in other neighborhoods, when the price savings are enough to cover bus fare or taxi fare.

Ohio is always clowned on here for being one of the most racist places.
I live in Ohio also. With the exception of rural areas, I believe Ohio is more classist than racist. Where I am the segregation is more socioeconomic. Racism is ALWAYS an issue, but lately it's more shitting on the poor. Wealthy Ohioans(No matter what race) believe poor people only deserve to subsist because poverty is a moral failing.
