I stumbled across this film when looking for the movie poster of a recent film I reviewed earlier.
The film is a mix of live action/animation similar to the cult classics “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” and “Cool World”.
The plot is basically a re-telling of the “Uncle Remus” stories done in the mid-70s.
I looked it up after viewing and found out the film was produced/written/directed by a White Man. It was highly controversial prior to its release and came close to being banned by Black Civil Groups. It eventually was released in limited run.
The film I learned, the animated characters were done by NYC Graffiti Artists of the era. I noticed before looking up how some of the characters looked familiar being I used to write/tag back in the 80s in NYC.
The characters do come off being stereotypical in their behavior and appearance. But if you watch the film and pay attention closely to the story, you will notice it is an anti-racism film dealing with politics and culture that is still happening today. I myself viewed it as a piece of art being I have an art background. Personally I feel this film is up to the viewers interpretation. Just like any work of art.
If you are easily offended, I recommend not watching it.
The opening sequence has legendary actor Scatman Crothers doing scat singing. This is the first time I heard him do this style of singing.
There are a number of well known actors from the era who do voice work. R&B singer Barry White co-stars in live-action and voice over. Very interesting seeing him. Phillip Michael Thomas co-stars live action and voice over along with Scatman in live action/voice over.
For the Pervs, there is animated nudity of a number of female characters. Some are done in an attractive way, some not.
For the Thirsty, the animated White Chick “Miss America” looks exactly like Internet model “Becky Crocker”.
For the Gay Agenda trackers, there are a number of animated characters done as transgender. What’s interesting is that they are all White male characters. There is animated full frontal male nudity of Black/White male characters.
The film was produced by Paramount. No way they gonna put this mofo on Paramount+.
I saw it on the free streaming service XUMO Play where they have a clean re-mastered version.
