Crater
2023

6/10

This is a newly released family film uploaded straight to Disney+.

I watched it this afternoon with one of my sons.

Before going on…if you are a person who agrees with everything the Republican Party, Wall Street and Dark Money donors are currently doing to this country….DO NOT WATCH THIS FILM.

Disney did a very clever job of addressing everything that the folks above that I mentioned are doing, without being preachy about it.

The film takes place about 150 years in the future on the Moon. It does a good job showing the hazards of living on the moon for an extended period of time without being graphic or direct.

The movie is 2 hours and flows nicely and moves fast being it’s a film for families/children. SFX/VFX is on theatre level. Disney spent money on this flick.

If you looking for a good clean film to watch with your family who are clueless on current events, they will enjoy it.

Synopsis

Caleb Channing is about to be relocated to an idyllic faraway planet following his father's death. To fulfill his dad's last wish before leaving, he and his three best friends hijack a rover to explore a mysterious crater.

Mother/Android
2021

6.5/10

This is a Sci-Fi flick that came out 2 years ago and I finally got around to seeing it last night.

Pretty decent film dealing with the aftermath of humans relying too much on AI and robots. Now with all this paranoia talk with AI, this film takes on a different meaning from when it was released.

It’s a 2 hour film. SHTF kicks in at the 6 minute mark and the film maintains a steady pace to the final scene. The film does a good job on showing how AI will adapt to how humans will try to take them out.

It’s a depressing film and does not have a predictable ending which makes it stand out.

For the Militants, the two main characters are an interracial BM/WW, nothing is shown between them.

Synopsis

Georgia and Sam flee their country as the world battles artificial intelligence.

The Legend of N***** Charley
1972

5/10

I was skimming thru my DVR looking for title of a movie and came across this.

Something stuck out and I looked it up and discovered this film is part of a trilogy.

I reviewed the 3rd film earlier in the thread.

The trilogy is…

• The Legend of N***** Charley
• The Soul of N***** Charley
• Boss N*****

The opening of the film is probably the most interesting about it. This is the first film that showed a part of slavery that I have not seen in any production.

When watching it, it gave some answers on some of the statements the lead character makes in “Boss N*****.

I watched it on XUMO, they have a shitty copy that looks like it came off an old VHS tape. I’m not sure if this film has been remastered, if it has I recommend going and watching it cuz the picture/sound quality on the XUMO version sucks. And when searching, look for it with “Black” in the title instead of “N*****”. The title has been officially changed or look under “Fred Williamson”.

Synopsis

Three escaped slaves (Fred Williamson, D'Urville Martin, Don Pedro Colley) fall in with drifters while fleeing a bounty hunter.

The Holcroft Covenant
1985

6.5/7

I stumbled across this yesterday while looking for something else and saved it and watched it this afternoon. It’s on tubi and a few other free streaming sites.

This mofo is definitely a sleeper hit. And it definitely needs to be remade to boost up the action and load it with todays VFX/SFX. Tom Cruise is the first in mind who I think can reboot this. You will agree when you watch it.

The film will definitely hook you in during the opening sequence and the first 10 minutes after will keep you glued to the couch to the last scene.

I’m not gonna spoil it, but pay attention to everyone and what they say.

Suspense is enough to keep you interested, there are no slow scenes. There is some light humor but it doesn’t take away from the film.

Synopsis

Crime drama from John Frankenheimer, based on a Robert Ludlum novel. The son of a Nazi general finds himself in a conspiracy involving Nazi gold.

Defcon-4
1985

4/10

I first became aware of this flick in the 1990s during the VHS days mainly cuz it has a cool looking box cover.

I remember renting the VHS tape twice, but never got a chance to watch it before returning it.

Skimming thru tubi last week and saw it, so decided to watch it this morning finally.

The plot has been done a million times prior and up to current day, so don’t expect anything with the story on this.

It’s a 80s B-Movie with crappy TV level SFX/VFX.

The only highlight is the White Female Astronaut who is a cutie. She is barely in the film.

If you are a hardcore fan of post-apocalyptic films and must watch all of them regardless if they are good or not…this film is for you.

Other than that, don’t waste your time.

Synopsis

A group of survivors (Lenore Zann, Maury Chaykin, Kate Lynch) of nuclear war must fight off a paramilitary faction in the near future.

Rubber
2010

6/10

This is a horror/comedy I stumbled upon earlier while searching for something else.

I watched it this afternoon.

If you like weird, offbeat material, you will definitely enjoy this film.

If not, the first 7 minutes will probably draw you in with what they do in the film. The film has a similarity to the cult classics “Tremors” and “The Car”.

It’s a simple basic film with a plot that has been done numerous times, this flick puts a spin on it.

Plenty of graphic violence thru-out.

For the Thirsty, there is a cute brunette White Chick the tire is after. We get full rear nudity of her.

It’s 90 minutes long, they could have cut 30 minutes off and it would still be a decent story.

Synopsis

A car tyre comes to life with the power to make people explode and goes on a murderous rampage through the Californian desert.

Sheba, Baby
1975

5/10

Watched this last night in the truck.

This is basically a simple film. Pam runs around as a Private Eye with a gun, but she doesn’t come off as a bad ass with it.

The plot has been done a few times in a number of films nothing new.

Pam is basically covered up thru-out the film, nothing to get excited about. Like all her films you get a little bit of boobs.

Watch it if you a hardcore Pam Grier fan and have to watch everything she is…otherwise skip it.

Synopsis

When the loan business of her father, Andy (Rudy Challenger), is trashed by thugs looking to force a sale, Chicago private investigator Sheba Shayne (Pam Grier) travels back to her hometown of Louisville, Ky., to even the score. Together with old flame Brick Williams (Austin Stoker), she attacks the henchmen of local loan shark Pilot (D'Urville Martin), but a retaliation leaves Andy dead. Blind with rage, Sheba vows to take out Pilot's boss, mob kingpin Shark (Dick Merrifield).

Doc Savage: The Man Of Bronze
1975

4.5/10

I was skimming thru looking for something and stumbled across this film. I watched it this evening in my truck on TCM.

I had no clue this film existed. I remember coming across and reading 2 paperback books back in JHS back in the 80s that were pretty good. And I recall Marvel/DC doing issues with him.

The movie is real hokey and plays out like a live action 70s Saturday morning show like “Isis” and “Shazam”. I’m surprised it was released in theaters.

They did a good job having the actors look like how they do in the books/comics. VFX/SFX is nothing special and not much in it.

I looked it up cuz I was surprised to find out this is the only live action project of Doc Savage. I discovered The Rock had plans about 4 years ago to do a live action film, but the studio dropped it deciding on doing a series. No word at this time what is going on with it.

If you are familiar with Doc Savage, you might like it. If you are not familiar, good chance you won’t like it.

They ended the film for a sequel, but it was never made.

Synopsis

Featuring the 1930s comic-book hero who, accompanied by his friends the Amazing Five, forsakes the chilly Fortress of Solitude in favour of the warmer climes of South America when he embarks on a search for his father's murderer.

One Down, Two to Go
1982

4.5/10

Watched this last night before going to bed.

This movie was mainly trying to get these 4 cats to continue their popularity from the films they did in the 70s. The movie failed at that with a rehashed script done in a number of black films in the 70s.

Not much shit talking. Not much action being they too old for it.

Watch only if you a fan of them, otherwise skip.

Synopsis

Buddies Cal (Fred Williamson), J. (Jim Brown), Chuck (Jim Kelly) and Ralph even the score for a rip-off martial-arts tournament.

Checked this one out yesterday. It was ok. Story was simple and straight-forward, easy to follow.

It has a slow pace, though certain characters & scenarios are under utilized. Some of the scenes felt abrupt. The movie also has a dull, overcast feel to it. It was filmed in Louisiana in Feb / March 2022.

Would have liked to have known more of his back story (flashbacks were brief) ... have more of Esai Morales' character as well ... known more about the staffing on the grounds / property. For her part, Sigourney Weaver played a piece of shit well.

Transformers Rise of the Beast

I felt like a kid at times at the beginning from the music to seeing transformers on the screen, then it started to drag.

But overall I enjoyed this. It was like Fast X and Guardians. A good summer popcorn movie with good CGI on a big screen. It's just a let down after Spiderverse. The Wu, Nas, Tribe was nice, but at times it seemed forced and overwhelming. I paid more attention to the songs than the conversations. I assume they used THAT Biggie song on purpose.

But the storyline with the humans was stupid. They weren't annoying per se, but the whole family and finding a job...blah blah. It was unnecessary. And I didn't dislike Tobe, but I disliked Tobe, but it didn't seem to be him as an actor.

That being said, I'd put it behind Bumblebee for best Transformers movie.

It was cool a black dude directed it and you could tell, but the story he had to work with was flawed.

Creed I II III (Amazon Prime)

Saw these movies between, yesterday and today. And I thought these movies were alright. I think the first movie was the best in the series. And part 3 as the weakest. For me it was a one and done. Most likely wont watch these in their entirety again. But would recommend if your a fan of the rocky movies. Or a fan of boxing movies in general.

Guardians Of The Galaxy 3(Movie Theater)

Saw this today, and I thought it was great. I liked the focus on Rocket raccoons origin. I would recommend this movie if anyone haven't seen it.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

Repetitive Rise

PRAISE: I definitely remember the badly animated 1996 Beast Wars series. I was curious to see how many characters from that show would be included in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
They did a good job with the inclusion of some of the characters and the SFX work.
Anthony Ramos and Domonique Fishback do fine with what they are given.
The voice work from Pete Davidson as Mirage, Michelle Yeoh as Airazor, Ron Perlman as Optimus Primal, Peter Dinklage as Scourge and last but not least Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime was excellent.
Scourge is probably the best villain since Transformers Age of Extinctions villain Lockdown.
I did enjoy a lot of the excellently choreographed action sequences. Some of the humor really worked. The soundtrack was great bringing back a lot of memories. The inclusion of something that I wanted to see in live action since the first Transformers movie was great. The presentation of something that could infuse new life into this franchise is something I'm looking forward to.

PROBLEMS: The movie presents a mainly ultra ,basic and clichéd human story.
I guess I'm experiencing Transformer fatigue. Sure the movies are entertaining but have become so repetitive I can almost guess what characters will say and what the outcomes will be for them.

No need for a lengthy review
At first glance I thought oh this movie has the same vibe as The Shining. Writer with a son and wife in a remote place...but no this is a patchwork of non linear scenes that add up to nothing.
The best thing about the movie is the great cinema photography. Was this a fever dreamlike nightmare or about overwhelming guilt?
Who knows.....who cares.....

Coonskin
1975

7.5/10

I stumbled across this film when looking for the movie poster of a recent film I reviewed earlier.

The film is a mix of live action/animation similar to the cult classics “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” and “Cool World”.

The plot is basically a re-telling of the “Uncle Remus” stories done in the mid-70s.

I looked it up after viewing and found out the film was produced/written/directed by a White Man. It was highly controversial prior to its release and came close to being banned by Black Civil Groups. It eventually was released in limited run.

The film I learned, the animated characters were done by NYC Graffiti Artists of the era. I noticed before looking up how some of the characters looked familiar being I used to write/tag back in the 80s in NYC.

The characters do come off being stereotypical in their behavior and appearance. But if you watch the film and pay attention closely to the story, you will notice it is an anti-racism film dealing with politics and culture that is still happening today. I myself viewed it as a piece of art being I have an art background. Personally I feel this film is up to the viewers interpretation. Just like any work of art.

If you are easily offended, I recommend not watching it.

The opening sequence has legendary actor Scatman Crothers doing scat singing. This is the first time I heard him do this style of singing.

There are a number of well known actors from the era who do voice work. R&B singer Barry White co-stars in live-action and voice over. Very interesting seeing him. Phillip Michael Thomas co-stars live action and voice over along with Scatman in live action/voice over.

For the Pervs, there is animated nudity of a number of female characters. Some are done in an attractive way, some not.

For the Thirsty, the animated White Chick “Miss America” looks exactly like Internet model “Becky Crocker”.

For the Gay Agenda trackers, there are a number of animated characters done as transgender. What’s interesting is that they are all White male characters. There is animated full frontal male nudity of Black/White male characters.

The film was produced by Paramount. No way they gonna put this mofo on Paramount+.

I saw it on the free streaming service XUMO Play where they have a clean re-mastered version.

In the Godfather, Why didn't Michael Corleone ever tell his sister Connie that her husband Carlo set her brother Santino Corleone up to be killed? Why would he rather have his sister hate him, than hate the son of a bitch who had her brother killed?

Is that because she loved him even though he beat the shit out of her, and he felt she would blame him for killing her husband in spite of her husband having a hand in getting her brother killed?

Supergirl
1984

4/10

I got home last night for my 10hr break and watched this film last night with my two sons. They had never seen it. I hadn’t seen it since it debuted in the theaters back in 1984.

I mainly watched it cuz I heard that Supergirl would be CGI in the upcoming Flash movie. So I watched this flick to catch up on what they did with her.

Not going into detail with the plot, but it basically sucked. I have no idea what they were trying to do with this film. Even the movie poster makes no sense.

It doesn’t follow the Supergirl storyline of the time this film debuted. Superman is not in the film which makes no sense. A large number of things take place that make no sense. I will give Warner Bros. the benefit of the doubt that things were to be explained in future projects….that never happened.

They did a piss poor job trying to recreate the chemistry that Gene Hackman/Ned Beatty had in Superman 1 with Faye Dunaway/Brenda Vaccaro. It fell flat.
The film takes place between Christopher Reeves Superman 3 and 4.

What is interesting is some of the visuals thru-out the film. Popeye’s Restaurant is in the film and how it is depicted it funny. Shlitz Malt Liquor is featured and it too is a funny scene. Both were not meant to be funny at the time of release, but nowadays it is.

Also, the Incredible Hulk comic book is shown. Not sure why this was put in, I will assume there might have been plans for a “Multiverse” back then which never came around.

Jimmy Olsen is dating Lois Lane’s kid sister Lucy which seemed odd.

The film is currently on MAX.

Synopsis

Kara of Argo City poses as Clark Kent's cousin, Linda Lee, to recover the Omegahedron from an evil Terran sorceress. Based on DC Comics characters.

Im not sure why he didnt tell her outright. Connie was in that mind set of he beats the hell out of me but i still love him. I think he eventually told her or someone did because by the time we get to the middle of Godfather 2 she is completely dedicated to Michael and in Godfather 3 the same.

The Flash

Flash & Fate

NO SPOILERS

PRAISE: After so much talk about this movie possibly being scratched after the off screen actions of it's star Ezra Miller The Flash has finally hit the big screen.
First things first Miller is very good in the movie taking on a dual role that is playful and coupled with raw emotion as Barry Allen/The Flash uses his superpowers to travel back in time to change the events of the past.
Of course i found Michael Keaton in the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman to be great in this. It's as if he has been portraying the character for the past 31 years instead of reprising it. Sasha Calle as Superman’s female replacement, Kara Zor-El does great with the time she is given displaying all the right amounts of despair and care and forming it into a believable performance.
I enjoyed the action sequences especially the ones at the beginning of the movie.
I think the movie did a great job with it's story threads about fate and life altering events, living with the losses that shape us.
The movie definitely has a lot of fan service coupled with nostalgia with the past, the present and what could have been. Anyone that has been a DC fan over the years should be pleased with whats presented i know it definitely put a smile on my face.

PROBLEMS: I thought that portions of the movie were overly silly and to time consuming especially in it's first 45 minutes. The movie goes into a repetitive mode that i know was neccessary for some moments but it still just felt like it was padding the movies lengthy running time.
Some of the CGI was a bit choppy at times.
I do wonder if a couple of things that were definitely changed in the past few months, were just set up for a laugh and that will basically go nowhere in the future for DC movies.

The Flash

Glad I avoided the spoilers instead of the obvious.

Somewhere in here is a good movie, but this ain't it for me. Especially since I was a fan of Flashpoint Paradox, I was hoping to like it better.

Michael Keaton is the likable part.

Now for the meh and ehhhhhh....

First of all, I've never been a Ezra as Barry Allen fan...and this is double the pleasure :smh: Is he supposed to be as unlikable as he is for me? I keep wondering how do people like him.

The comedy didn't work for me. Like at all, not sure if it was the script or the Ezra dislike with me. I think I had a light chuckle once.

Supergirl...underdeveloped. I'm not sure if she was good or bad.

It's like they wanted to top No Way Home. Some of it worked, some of it was cringe. It's like they really wanted to force it.

The end credits was ok, but pointless.

Please recast Ezra...

Checked out the following ones earlier this week.

Enjoyed the chapter layout and over-the-top nature of Sisu. Thanks for the recommendation, BGOL fam'.

The Michael J Fox documentary 'Still' from Apple+. Quite good. Tells his life, career & health battle journey well within approx' 90 minutes. He grew up locally, and it was interesting to see him make the jump from B.C. to Hollywood to pursue his acting dream. A few years as a struggling actor before his career took off landing Family Ties, Back to the Future, etc. The balancing act of those projects for several months. Becoming ill with Parkinson's in his late-20s (he turned 62 last week), etc. It was good to see his honesty in the doc' re: speech therapy, the work with his personal trainer or sport therapist re: movements, walking, core strength, balance and the injuries he's suffered from falls re: broken bones, etc. An eye opener too when he talked about his reliance on pills / medication, and addressing his alcoholism back in the early-90s.
