I know multiple ppl who own a lot more than me and I used to wonder why as well. It really depends on your intended purpose. There's no such thing as a do-it-all gun so some ppl make purchases for specific uses whether it be for competition, hunting, target shooting or collector's items.
If the public knew the laws in place now and how they work, they'd be amazed at how restrictive they are but just aren't being enforced properly. That along with the lack of consistency in agencies at doing their jobs properly would shock ppl. Felonies getting turned into misdemeanors, warnings going ignored, agencies in one division not receiving critical information from a different agency that would've triggered a flag, etc....
