I wouldn't consider myself poor and i just graduated with associates in criminal justice. Im about to join the army as a linguist. since i speak 4 different languages. My girl has also been in the army for the past 10 years and comes from a wealthy family.

I think the best advice in regards to giving recruits advice is to first ask why they are joining. Most Marine recruits I know are the patriotic type. That is fine. The ARMY recruits seem to be interested in college money. There are better options than the ARMY for college money especially for ethnic people.
If anything, advice people to at least get the general education done before enlisting so they can go in with as an E-1 or E-2. The extra cash helps out as well when dealing with the petty shit in BT and AIT [kp, tac duty, detail, etc].

You have a mix of people who join the Army and they each have their own reasons. All corporations are ran based on the militarty model think about it. The military can take a person from nothing to something if you allow it to. I see it like this in 5 years I will retire with a free 4 year degree, one home paid for and building a brand new one at this moment. I will have health and dental care for life so will the wife and a check coming every month without fail. Tell me where I can find that and I will take it all day long. Historical data shows that the average enlistee has at least 1-2 years college. So they market to things that will appeal to a college student, loan repayment, bonus money ect... yes they pick up crumbs on the table, GED, lower test scores, high school drop outs. Those make up a small few that serve.

I speak from experience because when I enlisted years ago, the hecklers and critics had their say.... but at the end of the day, I was the first one from my high school class to go out into the world and try a "real" job.
The experience shaped and molded me into a man. I was around grown men in a structured setting therefore I was able to find good role models.
Let me say this about the hecklers and critics who did not go on to college.... surprisingly, there after high school choices were "silly" as hell. Lets see.... drug dealer, petty criminal, still stayed home with there moms... factory workers... grocery store workers... all unskilled laborers. I laughed my ass off at em 4 years later at what they had accomplished compared to the fact I had traveled the world all in a 4 year span.
Because I thought I was much "better" than them... I enrolled in college. And guess what, I was a "far" better college student than some of high school honors grads and valedictorians currently attending at that time.
So for what it's worth, people can criticize all they want too.... but at the end of the day.... its about takin care of "yourself" and payin bill's.. As an Army recruiter i must say some of you cats got it so twisted. I don't prey on anyone group in particular. I talk to those who want the same opportunity that i have had. white black or hispanic rich poor or middle class. Its mostly the middle class to rich kids who want the craziest front line jobs. They are the ones who beg me to put them on the front lines. those are your infantry rangers and special forces dudes. My approach when i recruit is simple. how can you use the military to get what you want out of life, since they will use you.
As for me, after 15 years in i go back home to jersey and always thank god for my decision to join. I have what ever it is i want from life. material things like houses and cars and intangibles such as education and experiences that some of you cats will never see. i have done several tours in various combat zones installing voice and data networks and in 5 years im bouncing for the civilian sector to make even more money while drawing a check for the rest of my life. when you speak to people who have been in and are doing the career thing its always a sucess story. even those who have done 2-3 years have used the military as a stepping stone have the same sucess stories. In case you didn't know.... every one in the military isn't in the infantry. I was in the air force... my duties centered around aircraft maintenance. Planes are like cars.... maintenance is just as important as the mission.
Career choices are individual matters. If a man feels like he wants a military career, then who are you to challenge and disuade him. You should keep your mouth shut and hope for the best.
Besides, I don't hear you "braggin" about what you "decided" to do with "your" life.

2-Obviously, the only poor arguments that you have to military service is finding Bin-Laden? We are talking about military service, joining the military, or those in the military, what does finding Bin Laden, or a political issue as to why soldiers are in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc got to do with the soldiers... do you think they hopped a greyhound on their own from the Port Authority?
3-Like all documents which are used to describe this country, it is ammended to fit what this country is all about... in fact, when they spoke of citizen and rights when this country was created, they were speaking of only WASP land owners, which meant that the fools which rented/share cropped didn't have rights. Hell, Asians were the last to fall to legitimized or legislation racism which had to be amended.
4-So in addition to not understanding what all service men do other than what you seen on movies and G.I.Joe, the only thing you understood vaguely was compensation for disabled veterans who represented you way of life and being and the rights which you hold dear as your point?
