Why the Phillies want Nick Castellanos and are willing to pay luxury tax to land him
By Matt Gelb 20m ago 9
LAKELAND, Fla. — Dave Dombrowski, flanked by four other Phillies officials, settled Friday afternoon into a familiar spot behind home plate at Joker Marchant Stadium. It was here where, as a Tigers executive, he watched Nick Castellanos grow from first-round pick to star outfielder. Now, with Castellanos still a free agent less than three weeks until Opening Day and his suitors dwindling, Dombrowski did what he does best: He whispered sweet ideas into an owner’s head.
The Phillies are in serious pursuit of Castellanos, sources told The Athletic. If they sign him to a long-term deal, they would pay luxury tax for the first time in club history. They would surrender their second-round draft pick. These are things the Phillies were not willing to do earlier in the week. But as the asking price for Castellanos dipped — it would still be a lucrative deal, likely for more than the four years and $79 million to Kyle Schwarber — the Phillies reconsidered their stance.
It is a massive inflection point in how the Phillies build teams.
If they sign Castellanos, the Phillies would lean into massive defensive uncertainty virtually all over the field. They had envisioned Schwarber as their left fielder, but he would likely see more time at designated hitter with Castellanos in left. The Phillies could rotate four players (Castellanos, Schwarber,
Josh Donaldson who we didn’t need. Could’ve went after story, Correa or freemanWTF the Yankees doing?!?
There goes Roy Hobbs, the best there ever was.

Albert Pujols announced Monday that he and wife Deidre are splitting up, days after she underwent successful surgery to remove a brain tumor.
“I’ve been asked a lot of questions over the past few days regarding what’s been going on at home and sadly, after 22 years of marriage, I have made the decision to file for divorce from my wife, Deidre,” Pujols said in a statement released by his agent, Dan Lozano.
“I realize this is not the most opportune time with Opening Day approaching and other family events that have recently taken place. These situations are never easy and isn’t something that just happened overnight.”
He and Deidre had been married since 2000.
“As a devout Christian, this is an outcome that I never wanted to see happen,” Pujols continued in his statement. “For many long days and nights, I prayed, asking the Lord for His guidance.”
Pujols concluded his statement by noting that he and Deidre “remain committed” to raising their five children “in a loving and safe environment.”
“I am thankful for the five beautiful children that we brought into this world and remain committed to raising them in a loving and safe environment. I ask that you please respect our privacy and the privacy of our five children during this time.”
Last season, Pujols hit .236 with 17 homers as he split time with the Dodgers and Angels.
I'm very concerned about Bohm at 3rd. He can't field for shit!!! I'd say put Stott there and be done with it. Don't move him all over the place like they did Kingery. They ruined that man doing that stupid shit. That bullpen makes me nervous too. And Nola ain't shit. Long as we score 5 runs per game we'll be fine. Offense is gonna be sick. I'm going to the 2nd game Saturday against the A's. Mike Schmidt will be honoring Bryce. Should be cool to see.my Phillies looking good.....pitching weak....defense weak...but, these dudes will score runs with this lineup
