Im not saying the publication is wrong. Im saying its lip service from Russian leadership. Asking for NATO membership is fake. Its so fake that its laughable.
Again, NATO literally exists to help fight Europe protect itself from Russia.
Presenting this Russian request as legitimate is what makes this absurd.
It makes no sense because at that point NATO may as well devolve itself.
I think the talks about NATO joining was in the 60’s
while the expansion talks was in the 90’s but never was signed(from my limited google searches)
The only reason I think RU may have wanted Nato membership would've been to undermine and destroy it from within.

NATO was FOUNDED to protect Europe from not Russia, but the Soviet Union and now exists to protect members from ANY country…ie, China.
All youve given me is a hunch as to why you think their request to join was disingenuous. My reason is based on history.
Russian lost wayyyyy more people in ww2 than any other country..20 some million or so.
Security is behind their reason to join.

The agreement to not expand was never signed, from what I read.
But, there was also an agreement between Russia, the US and Ukraine offering security agreements in return for Ukraines nukes..
