How much money a single person needs to earn to get by in every U.S. state

These numbers are for places that you wouldn't want to live, and places that don't have jobs that pay that much. In Macon and Albany, with me making 80k, I'd be King Shit of Turd Island. In the A, I'm just another turd.

It's obvious to me that the authors of the study didn't do any type of research when it came to California. Gasoline is $4.09/gallon... That's just the beginning of the shennanigans.

Living Wage calculator

WHAT IS THE LIVING WAGE CALCULATOR?

"Families and individuals working in low-wage jobs make insufficient income to meet minimum standards given the local cost of living. We developed a living wage calculator to estimate the cost of living in your community or region based on typical expenses. The tool helps individuals, communities, and employers determine a local wage rate that allows residents to meet minimum standards of living."

Come on OP, your screen name should tell you this list is flawed! I live in NOVA and there's no way you can make it up here on 34k and 12k in housing per year! They must be talking about living in a storage facility!

I was thinking the samething...I guess they said FUCK DC, it ain't even worth it...lol

You're assuming these folk have cars.

If you live in southern California and you don't have a car... you're basically fucked. Our transit system is not up to par with other states.

An eighty mile commute one way is normal here. So gasoline prices are factored into monthly budgets in a major way. You can be on the freeway for an hour and thirty minutes (one way) easily.

Who put this study out MIT?

Who paid MIT to do this?

All the people living like that ride the bus to work, use Obama prepaid flip phones and live in a studio apartment with 4 other people.

get by

2: to make ends meet : SURVIVE

survive

1: to remain alive or in existence : live on

Those numbers are not based on how much you need to actually live (enjoy life) but the bare minimum you need to survive without receiving any assistance (section 8, EBT cards, etc....).

These folks are constantly moving around, staying with relatives, borrowing money, doing illegal shit, working under the table, etc....because they are just getting by.

Right! Like you're eating rice and water EVERY meal

Why is it DC when DC is in 2 of them states named.
Weird

The District of Columbia was built on land given by Virginia and Maryland, but it’s a wholly independent political territory from those two states. Why do you think there is a push for DC statehood? And the land Virginia donated was given back and became the counties of Arlington and Alexandria. DC was supposed to be shaped like a diamond. Like the Roc. Insert any Masonic conspiracy theory here ________ .

Pass the blunt kid. U buggin rn

:giggle:

I actually “got by” in NC on 24k as a graduate (2007-2014) student. :dunno: Wife and daughter with me. We were on food stamps too. I miss those stamps.

There were some real struggles, but I got by.
They pretty much average 1250 a month for rent and 300 a month for food if you peep their calculation.. they probably thinking metro card life.. 1 tv with cable, 1 cell phone and the rest on whatever.. it’s pretty much can 1 person survive on that income depending on a certain area

You’re the only ones in here posting real info. People are woefully misguided about the median incomes in the United States.

Public transit clears that. Especially a discounted bus pass.

I don't know if you're familiar with So.Cali. But, I have a friend who lives in Riverside County. His job is at Edwards Air Force Base which is in Kern County. That's about a 110 mile trip one way. He's on the road for about 2.5 hours, again one way. The 138 freeway is a two lane highway. If there's an accident, you're screwed. If a truck is in front of you driving slow, your screwed.

Public Transit will not get him there in a timely fashion if at all. Buses and trains don't go everywhere like they do in other states. A bus/transit pass won't do anything for him. A vehicle of your own is a must here.

Y'all don't have to believe me... It's the truth for most of us though. Most can't afford to live in the city of LA so they move outwards, and commute to work.

You need a car in most of CA. CA is spread out.
So is most of the southern states. People get by (somehow) but it's Hella time consuming. I had a stint as a Lyft driver once. This Mexican lady called me to pick her up at an area and she just hiked through the bushes. I dropped her off in time for her to catch the local tram in Dallas.

It took me four hours to get home after dropping off my only vehicle for repairs. Train+bus+mile walk and it's in the city. Mind you, if the phone dies, no map in the pocket.

The problem is we're mainly males hunting for keeps. Holler at those broke broads in the ladies forum to say what's doable.
