Tech Help: Can ya'll recommend a good affordable router?

I apologize for coming off like an asshole. If your router was hacked you wouldn't know. It takes an average of 200 days before businesses discover a network hack. The router was tripping because your computer was tripping. Probably DNS issues from the virus. Your computer is a windows or mac. The router most likely runs linux and the same virus wouldn't attack both systems. So it's highly unlikely the virus caused the issue. You should do a factory reset on the router and set it up from scratch. If it's old scrap it. Fuck a apple router. Get a firewall.

This would be nice.

I hear you and I followed your advice and threw the router out and got a new one and CLEANED my PC.

I'll let you know how it goes.

I just picked this up for $30
TP-Link
AC750 Dual Band Wi-Fi Range Extender (RE200)
Put it mid range between the router and the furthest spot in your house you want to reach

And @playahaitian I have the TP-link Archer C7 got it cheap on Amazon Prime day in July but it's AC1750 and I have DD-WRT running on it. With my WiFi extender, does the whole house. It's about $87 now.

The range extender it nice. Good looking out. You should just cope a firewall homie. DD-WRT is cool tho, lot's of features. But it's not updated enough to be really secure.

Get the best Asus Router you can afford and install Merlin, Tomato or DD-WRT if you're into that kind of thing. They'll be updated regularly. Most of these companies are not going to keep up as they release newer versions of routers.

If you want to set it and forget it... Google's Onhubs are dead simple, managed from a phone app and the prices are way down since they releaseed their newer Google WiFi. Same thing though.

Check out the wirecutter: The Best Wi-Fi Router (for Most People)
i was looking for the first post that recommended asus

the signal strength on the ones i tested was crazy

IT background here. Think I'll be ok. I don't even use 192.168.x.x
Specialized in firewalling and cisco routing. I do monitor my network from time to time but not worried about my router. Not even in a congested area or anywhere that even a house in my immediate area can get past my router. Stuff is cloned, if you get me.

I hear you. After doing this shit all day I don't do too much at home anymore either. But we just moved and I'm not use to everything on wireless. I need to get my guy out here to run me some drops.

now I gotta ask...

What is DD-WRT?

What are the benefits and how would I install it on this router?

ugh... if you don't know anything about networking and routing, then idk if you'd really want to mess around and screw up settings in your router.
It allows you to alter many settings in your router to do a lot more than the software that it's sold with does.

Here's the site, http://www.dd-wrt.com/ but suggest someone who knows how to mess with it, do it for you. Otherwise just rock with it out the box.
And if doing so, please set a password on your router and put security on the WiFi like AES and WPA2. You'll see it in the settings.

I just set a password for the router and a separate one for the wireless access

all I could find is this...so I enabled everything

Your old router was probably fine. If you never changed the password from the default, you probably got hit by a virus that can change DNS and open ports once it can figure out what type of router it's dealing with. Also, since I see you installed DD-WRT, you strongly need to research what feature does what. Enabling everything can be just as bad as not having a firewall at all. For example, you opened up a lot of ports or settings for VPN and Voice over IP by what you listed above.

This is why I hate when people blindly just suggest an app/firmware without considering who's using the equipment. They may have effectively made the original problem worse because now there's TOO MUCH information to deal with.

Oh I didn't install DD-WRT! I was ASKING about it. Don't even know how to install it.

And that is the standard security settings I posted for my NEW one.
I was asking if its OK to have them ALL enabled.

I just changed the router because as soon as I did, everything was fine. I think I needed an upgrade anyway. And when I called the manufacturer they agreed.

Do I need a wifi extender if I get drop signals sometimes esp. when I work from home and use the VPN for work? Will the wifi extender help improve that??

You would need an extender if you have a fairly large home with dead spots where you can't pick up a signal.

Naw, I don't have a large house. The VPN sometimes just drops even though I am connected to my own personal wifi. Very weird

Try changing the channel on the wireless to 11 or 9 if it is a 2.4 or 149/165 if 5ghz.

A lot of the new routers will automatically switch channels so you are constantly getting the best connection at all time.

Most of them default to automatically, but many of them only scan for a new channel when all the connections have dropped or the routers are powercycled. Also they sometimes choose a channel that is not clear.

What is the best in 2021?

Depends on your needs. If you need whole house coverage, Basement to attic, there are a decent number of 'mesh' routers out there. I haven't checked what's the latest WIFI spec in awhile. Did Wifi 6e ever become a reality?

dd-wrt (is Tomato still a thing?) is/was a firmware replacement for you router. You can get lost in the vast number of options. When I used it years ago, I turned my old router from a AP into a wireless repeater/extender. Cool, but lots of setup.

Just a router or a mesh system?

I use a mesh now, have 3 "pods" around the crib for overall coverage. I'm using the Samsung Connect hubs. They're old, like 3 yrs old now but run AC speed, I forget the speed and over 5ghz.

My son is a heavy gamer, runs his stuff over wifi and he's the only one that complains. Everything else like Netflix and TV apps don't have any lag. So no need I had to update anything til the rugrat complains.

I hate when you go Wakanda on me bro...

I have no idea what a mesh system is.

I just wanted to replace the router I got.

all I got is a TP Link AC 1900

I wasn't trying to go past 150 if possible I don't stream too much not a house, maybe 6/8 devices total never at the same time.

But what happened to the old one?

Do you reboot it from time to time? I usually reboot my stuff like every two weeks to a month.

Hold on that's NORMAL?

if that is the case?

then its fine.

I thought it was getting old or something!

When I used to run my old router, using the other software, I rebooted it daily. Helps to clean out the tables that stores how to get from point A to B in routing.

Sorry but in IT, before troubleshooting it's always best to start with a reboot, lol.

Reboot that router weekly to every two weeks or so.
