Tech Help: Can ya'll recommend a good affordable router?

thanks

I didn't even consider that...

I got Optimum.

A quick google search and it seems

http://www.linksys.com/us/P-EA3500-Linksys/p/P-EA3500/?gclid=CIytt8PXt9ECFc-EswodOSIM9w

is supposed to be good.

but can you recommend HOW I would find out what is the BEST router for Optimum Online?

are you using an optimum modem that you are payin for once a month?

If so, just get a modem with router... and save some money...

then I would do a search for best modem/router for optimum network... and pick the one that works best for you..

are you refering to what brand and model router to purchase?

You need one to connect to an optimum modem?

yeah exactly...

I did a quick search these are the only modems they say are compatible with their network...

  • Arris TM804 - 4 Port 3.0 modem
  • Arris TM1602 - 2 port 3.0 modem
  • Motorola SBV6220 3.0 modem**

Where u find it for $30?
Amazon, buy almost everything there

Amazon product ASIN B00NR2VMNC
NewEgg has it the same price. the router I have is AC1750 and this device is only AC750, but unless you're copying major files wirelessly, your internet probably isn't that speed for any devices needing the full 1750 throughput which is only half anyways or at times a fourth of that bandwidth.

You basically don't need all that speed

I just picked this up for $30
TP-Link
AC750 Dual Band Wi-Fi Range Extender (RE200)
Put it mid range between the router and the furthest spot in your house you want to reach

And @playahaitian I have the TP-link Archer C7 got it cheap on Amazon Prime day in July but it's AC1750 and I have DD-WRT running on it. With my WiFi extender, does the whole house. It's about $87 now.

just ordered it thanks family!!!!

appreciate all of bgol tech support help.

would have gotten the one with the modem but I just found out its free with my package.

that looks good!

See I'm at a crossroads Optimum just told me they can give me a router for FREE with my package too...

but I don't know how I feel about my ISP having THAT much control over my info...

or am I just being paranoid?

Cause it IS free....

That's just an extender. You would still need a router. Depending on the size of your house, you might be ok with the Comcast modem/router. I don't know what the specs are on it, but these days it's typically 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. As long as you can log into it and throw your own password on there and use security on it like WPA2, then you're fine.

thanks

its just an apartment so I don't need anything serious...

OK I see what people are complaining about.

It seems the "free router" also turns your home into a optimum wifi hotspot,

so anyone who receives optimum online can access it as free wifi.

It shouldn't effect the individual security of YOUR home network.

Does the Smart Routers optimumwifi hotspot use my internet?

The hotspot is provisioned separately from the customer's personal internet, and users are given a separate IP range from the customers. They also receive separate bandwidth from the customers. It is designed to not affect their personal internet. The router is free but still owned by Cablevision, customers are not capable of modifying the firmware. Customers are welcome to provide their own modem and refuse the smart router if they are not interested in it.

However it is being used to expand Optimum's own wifi.

that is a little slimy that they don;t tell you that but it is FREE.

I gotta think on that one.

My only concern is how fast is your speed and does that affect your bandwidth. If your speed is typically poor then obviously refuse that cause many will be hogging that, but if you have blazing speeds, then it's whatever.

Unless someone else has their own opinions on it.

my speed is

56.5 Mbps download

23.8 Mbps upload

is that considered fast?

so far I have no complaints.

Yes that's good, but the question is, is that what you're paying for in speed or is it half of what you're supposed to get. Also some areas more congested than others, at times like after work in the evenings may have heavy use in the area and your speeds may be affected. If you're not a heavy user, you may not notice it, then it doesn't matter.

Also check your speeds on Speedtest.net, don't use Comcast's own bandwidth test, they will fudge their own numbers at times lol

wow...

price is right, but is that TOO MUCH for an apartment?

Can there be TOO MUCH?

Doubtful. Apartments are the places you have the most trouble because of all the wireless interference from the other apartments. Changing the channel on the router can sometimes help compensate though.

Have heard that Comcast owns speedtest.net

Think they may partially own it. But can still pick other locations if yours defaults to one of theirs to test.

Just many times if you test their internal servers, sometimes will see speeds inflated as compared to elsewhere. You can hit speed test in Google and there's a test right there as well I guess running java or flash.

the question is what are you looking for in a router?

Just wanted simple easy to use and install.

I went to order on Amazon but they had a lighting sale...so I actually got this for the exact same price as the one I was gonna get.

This is the one I was going to get, but when I switched ISP's the instead of a modem I got a gateway with the router built in from them.

(Remove the space after amazon.com)

Whatever you decide to get, just check the reviews on amazon first. Some of the newer TP links won't let you put on 3rd party software any more. (DDWRT etc) I don't remember if the one above allows it or not.

this is what I ended up getting since it was on sale for $89

Damn that came just in time. That is the lowest I've seen it since I put it on my wishlist. The lowest I think previously was 99.00. You lucked out starting this thread and then them getting a lightening deal. It wasn't on sale earlier today. The lightening deals only last a few hours or until out of stock. It was 119.00 earlier today and 129.00 when I originally added it to my wishlist.

Get the best Asus Router you can afford and install Merlin, Tomato or DD-WRT if you're into that kind of thing. They'll be updated regularly. Most of these companies are not going to keep up as they release newer versions of routers.

If you want to set it and forget it... Google's Onhubs are dead simple, managed from a phone app and the prices are way down since they releaseed their newer Google WiFi. Same thing though.

Check out the wirecutter: The Best Wi-Fi Router (for Most People)

fingers crossed!

and thanks to YOU

the reviews were great

but many STILL said the C7 was actually BETTER...which is confusing

I will try this out and if I don't like it worse case I'll exchange it for the C7.

(funny thing I FINALLY figured out what was up with that computer with the virus...the ROUTER was infected! once I took it off and scanned my PC I realized where the problem REALLY was, I didn't even KNOW that was possible. I could have just factory reset the router, but I decided to just chuck and start fresh, so NOW I gotta RETURN the 2nd new computer and now I'm finally repairing my laptop on my own!)

If a virus took out your router throw away everything connected to it and start from scratch. You been hacked and it's all compromised. But it's highly unlikely that shit happened.

I though that speed would have been your first priority. Does this one have gigabit ethernet ports? If your connection is faster that 100MBps then the WAN ethernet port needs to be gigabit capable.
Most routers are very easy to set up.

damn bruh
I got the NETGEAR AC1750 Smart WiFi Router Dual Core 800MHz Processor
that you were thinking about buying.
I got a great deal from a holiday sale 2 years ago for $80.

Its a decent router but not the best. I had to do some tweaks to it to optimize it.

The one you bought should be efficient enough for use.

believe what you want

but I aint the only one

i share to protect my bgol fam.

I apologize for coming off like an asshole. If your router was hacked you wouldn't know. It takes an average of 200 days before businesses discover a network hack. The router was tripping because your computer was tripping. Probably DNS issues from the virus. Your computer is a windows or mac. The router most likely runs linux and the same virus wouldn't attack both systems. So it's highly unlikely the virus caused the issue. You should do a factory reset on the router and set it up from scratch. If it's old scrap it. Fuck a apple router. Get a firewall.

This would be nice.
