I think it depends on your state. For ours (NC), I believe we have to register with the state and create our own at home school. As far as their learning, discoveryk12 has some good reviews for curriculum and a schedule to follow. We are looking more into it tomorrow. Schools are a mess... even before taking this covid thing into account. A ton of teachers quit because of last school year and class sizes are increasing to jam more of them into classrooms. I hope I'm wrong but this seems a recipe for disaster. Our little ones will be taken care of despite all that
